Chapter Text
"Come on, come on! Pick up the slack, guys! Ya' call that a sprint? More like a powerwalk to me! Keep. It. Up!" Whistlllle!
Sonic blew his whistle, clapping his hands together as he hyped up the team he was coaching. The head coach was out of town for a wedding, so it was only Sonic who was left to pick up the pieces of this team. And by Chaos, he was a natural! Being born with extraordinary powers beyond anyone's comprehension already made him a prime candidate for this sort of speed-related sport, even if he was never allowed to join in as a kid for the obvious "can run near the speed of light" thing. Not only was he on the track now, he was able to train his own little batch of kiddos, keeping up with them down the track and not even losing an ounce of energy in the process.
"All right, all right." Whiistle! Whistle! "Great work out there y'all! Rocky, Imma need you to keep up the pace next time. Duke, bring water, c'mon man, that's common sense!" He chuckled at the parrot, before turning over to a smaller gecko. "Grit... you're our MVP this week! Up top!" He outstretched his hand and the gecko gleefully reciprocated.
Letting the boys blow up into raucous noise for a bit, he gave another low whistle to calm them down. "Hopefully coach will be back next week to see how much I've put you to the test! I know it's hard and stuff with him gone, but we gave it our all didn't we? And you can't say I was that bad of a coach! Not to say I don't miss the guy, but..." As he jokingly trailed off, the group of boys chuckled loudly on the track. Sonic placed a hand on his hip.
"Oooookay now, who's ready to have a happy Friday? Cause you know I am!"
"Whooo! Yeah!" The crowd clambered for the gate as Sonic wrangled the keys from his jacket pocket, opening the gate and letting them all run loose. He glanced at his Chao Watch. STEP GOAL ACHIEVED. Nice, now he felt even more accomplished than what he already did today!
Once all of the boys were gone and away, he locked the gate up and set out on his way. He usually took a walk around the city before deciding what place he could crash at. He scrolled on his notes app, which always had the pros and cons of every house. He would usually get indecisive every week before finding a place.

... Sonic never figured that out later, but he'd already made up his mind. He set his GPS to the Rabbit residence, texted Amy to let her know he was coming to her and Vanilla plus Cream's place to sleep for the week, put in his Airpods, and walked through the streets, following the directions and listening to music all the while. Moving along the roads, looking across streets, and jaywalking too just to spice it up.
"Woah!" Sonic tripped over a small piece of concrete, one of his headphones shooting out of his ear and onto the floor. "Shitshitshit..." Leaning down to pick up the lost earbud, he heard something else. Something that wasn't from his earbud. His ear twitched. What the... He looked into the alleyway. Was that... crying? He glanced around, putting his airpods in their packet and hesitantly walked in. The crying got louder. He came across a small wicker basket, a blanket bundled over top of it. He picked it up and inspected it. The crying stopped as he picked it up, and then he finally lifted the blanket. And there it was. It's a baby. A baby fox! With an adorable button nose and fluffy white cheek tufts.
Sonic nearly felt like bursting into tears. He smiled, before placing the blanket back on the kit. "It's okay little guy," he whispered. "I'll take care of you. I'm kinda runnin' late, so I hope Amy's not to upset with me haulin' ya around." Through busy hands, he picked up his phone and opened the texts app.
SONIC: Hey Ams, Gonna Be Late :)
Got Somethin On The Way :))
AMY: Kk, see u there
He smiled, looking down at the fox kit. "Looks like I'm gonna look out for you from now on, huh, little buddy?"
When the kit cooed, Sonic chuckled.
"Yeah, I know. C'mon, let's get to Ams' place."
