The Dead Woman

Summary:

Dabi finds out Magne has feelings for him, but as quickly as he accepts it...she's gone.

Work Text:

I remember when that asshole from the Shie Hassaikai came to visit. It was a cold day.

Before they came to visit, Magne convinced me to come outside with her for a cigarette. I was hesitant to go with her because she was so much more eccentric than I, but when she broke through, she was so excited.

“So why did you want me with you?” I said, using my quirk as a lighter.

She was nervous, needlessly more than usual around me. That always confused me. She’s this big-shot criminal, but she couldn’t ever hold a conversation with me.

She sheepishly avoided eye contact, “I’m not sure how you haven’t picked up on it yet.”

I stared at her silently, what was she talking about?

“Look, I like you stupid, not like as a partner in crime. I’m attracted to you.”

I was taken aback, “Mags, I…”

I wasn’t sure what to say. Nobody could love me, not even my own father. How could this woman who I had known for only a few months be interested in me? I wasn’t even beautiful anymore.

She caressed my face softly, “Look Dabi, I don’t know what the future holds, but I’d love to get to know you. All of you. But you’re so thick-skulled I don’t even know how to get in.”

I winced in preparation for my burns to hurt, as they always do, but her touch felt…nice? Nobody has touched me in a loving way since I was a child. It was before my mother lost her mind; she held me.

I thought for a moment what to say, “We can try, but this won’t be easy. For either of us.”

“I’d like that, a lot,” she smiled at me, “Thank you.”

She gently kissed me on the cheek, I don’t think I’ve ever seen her so sincere.

“We’ll talk after this meeting Twice arranged with some new recruits, okay?”

I nodded, “Okay.”

That was the last time I ever saw her.

. . .

“Big Sis is gone,” Toga’s eyes were welling with tears.

*She’s gone. There’s no way. The only person who could try to understand me. In the blink of an eye. * The thoughts rushed through my head. Someone who could love me. Serves me right. It’s just as I expected. For once I let hope in, and as fast as it arrived it was gone.

“You’re joking, right?” my face stayed blank, and my hand quickly tugged at my hair reflexively.

There was fire in Toga’s eyes, different from what I’d ever seen before, “I’m not.”

All I could do was run. I’m not sure what I was thinking, but running away was my only choice.

I found myself in an alley. Wood and trash were everywhere. I burned it all. In an instant, it was all destroyed. My body burned with anger. My flames made my skin tingle and burn, my scars expanded, and I’d have to readjust my staples later. I felt so much at once, and I wanted to be numb. Blood streamed down my face from what was remaining of my tear ducts.

The one person who found me not repulsive was dead. The one person who tried to learn about who I was and what my motives were. She didn’t deserve to die. She may have been a villain, yet she was still a pure being. Someone willing to show a truly despicable man like me cares.

She was the one who could bring Toya Todoroki to life, but now she was the dead one.

God is a cruel being.
