Hermione was enjoying the luxury of taking her time getting ready for the day. She sat on a cushioned chair before her vanity, spelling her wild curls into some semblance of order and smiling at her reflection as she basked in the morning sunlight streaming through the tall window that took up half a wall in the master bedroom. She had a good life, despite all she'd been through. Her family supported her, her career was steadily lifting her through the ranks at the Ministry, and her past didn't haunt her so much anymore. It helped that her genius of a husband had managed to devise a cure for the cursed scar that had once occupied her forearm.
As she applied light makeup (the muggle way, because she liked the manual methods for self care), her quiet relaxation and musings were interrupted by a loud bang , followed by the distinct scent of smoke. Hermione was instantly off her feet, wand in hand as she raced down the halls and stairway for the main story of the house, following her nose. She finally found the source of the chaos when she skidded into the kitchen.
Before her was her husband, face sooty and waving his apron up and down to try to fan the smoke toward the open window. In the far corner of the kitchen, a gleeful giggle sounded and alerted her to the presence of their son. Hermione turned and scooped Scorpius up in her arms, waving her wand to guide the smoke out of the window and clean the soot from her husband's face.
“Draco Lucius Malfoy, what in Merlin's name did you do? ” Hermione asked daily, watching her husband stare at the stove with slumped shoulders. He turned to face her slowly, looking for all the world like a kicked puppy. Suddenly, Hermione couldn't find it in her to be irritated.
“We were trying to make you breakfast, my heart… the muggle way, as you like it. I have no clue what went wrong.” Draco stared at her dejectedly for a long moment before Hermione sighed deeply, deposited Scorpius back in his chair, and stepped up to her husband. She wrapped her arms around his waist, hugging him to her tight and placing a gentle kiss on his chin.
“Draco, darling.” She murmured, nuzzling his chest. “I do appreciate what you were trying to do, no matter how it turned out. What do you say we all go out to that little café you like so much? Then we can take Scorp to the park and enjoy this beautiful day together.”
Draco's face transformed as he absorbed her words and easy affection. He buried his face in her hair, wrapping his arms around her and holding her close until little Scorpius started making noises of impatience. They both broke out of their reverie with a smile, and as Draco straightened up his attire Hermione scooped Scorpius into her arms.
“All right then, my beautiful family. Let's go get some breakfast.” Draco announced, putting on a dramatic air of self-importance. Hermione merely laughed, shaking her head as he wrapped his arm around her waist and led them all to the floo.
