The sun was warm on Grimlock’s back and the air currents strong under his wings. He was flying beside another dragon, one that was slightly smaller than him and gleamed white and red under the sun.
The other dragon turned to look at him and Grimlock’s breath caught for a moment at how beautiful Ratchet was like this, with those bright blue eyes of his framed by gleaming white scales and red brow ridges that curved up into the kind of horns grown by the dragons of the north. He looked as fierce and strong on the outside and Grimlock knew he was on the inside, and it made him want to tempt Ratchet into a mating flight.
“See something you like?” Even his voice was more beautiful, speaking Draconic from a body made for the language.
“Always,” Grimlock rumbled happily.
“Well, then why don’t you–”
-_-_-
Grimlock woke abruptly, the beautiful dragon in his dreams falling into the dust of memory as the hall outside their door was filled with shouting. It took him several seconds to realize that the Healers and staff were shouting about a fire, and that Ratchet had already climbed out of bed to go help.
“If you’ll carry water for us, it’ll help,” Ratchet said when he realized Grimlock was looking at him.
“Yes. Me get rain barrels and fill from river.” He climbed out of bed himself and followed Ratchet into the hallway. For a moment, he thought he saw the glitter of white scales on Ratchet’s face as the Healer turned away, but he shook his head to dispel the image.
He didn’t need to be fantasizing right now, when the Hall was burning and his beloved needed him. He could feel disappointed later.
