Work Text:

Stuck in a bathroom stall, or at a party I don't remember how I got to fixing my hair as I looked into the mirror. My cane is by my side leaning against the bathroom sink as I stare at the mess of my hair. I think about my friends who are waiting for me out on the dance floor. Was I going to regret leaving my cane behind in my bag so I can dance the night away? Yes, I am most likely am but I am allowed to do stupid stuff from time to time am I not?

As I was doing this another girl came into the restroom, I turned to look and see who it was out of instinct and was shocked when I saw Alya standing before.

Back before years ago we were inseparable, it seemed like our friendship would never end, that this middle school freaking out would stay till the end but it didn't. After the accident we fell away so quickly and easily that it hurt me to think about her and the rest of the girls who we used to hang out with for hours fell away. Only one stayed or more like came to me.

It seemed we were only friends of convenience, being in the same grade, same school, same classes made it seem that we would be together forever. But it was just convincing. After that was taken away, I had to move to other classes since there was not an elevator at the school then going to different high schools we fell away.

Somehow, someway, we are now standing at the same Senior party in the bathroom. She does not really look the same. Alya had seemingly stopped dying her hair an orange, having her natural dark hair riddle with braids in her mostly unbraided hair. A new dark blue pair of glasses on her face, she seemed so different from the girl whose face I knew better than my own.

Now with an image shattered that I always held near and dear to my heart gone. Alya was looking at me with what I assume I was looking at her like.

"You're different." Ayla says a bit dumbly, though I was so sure of that anymore this girl could mean many things by that.

"Of course I am."  I replied maybe a bit too harshly then I meant to. Then again there was an anger that I could not shake at her actions. "I am not exactly sure what you meant by that but we all do. You, yourself clearly did."

Alya at least seemed to wince at that. "What have you been up to?" She asks seemingly wanting to keep this up. The need to go back in on myself and act how I used to act with her was strong but I would not let myself do that again.

"Not that much, having to do PT every week kinda makes it hard to do things but I manage. Yourself?" I quickly said wanting this to be over with. I dont hate my past self per say, but I don't want to be put back into that box ever again. What I was, I don't like anymore. And having people that I only knew from my past brings it all back.

"Nothing myself really." Alya says and before she had the chance to say more I was ready to leave.

"Sorry to cut this short but my friends are waiting for it." I then quickly left the bathroom making it back down the hall briefly wondering to myself if I had known about how that friendship would have ended if I would have continued it.

Thinking back to the good times of my life before this happened made me feel oh so bitter sweet. No I would have. If only for the sake of the good times I get to remember, I thought to myself about finding my friends.
