Work Text:
It was a Sunday morning in February, and you were lying cosied up in bed with your boyfriend, Adam Faulkner-Stanheight. The air in the room was cold, but you stayed warm and snug under the sheets in your fuzzy socks. It was early, and still quite dark outside. You pulled up the blinds slightly and peered through the window. The moon was shining brightly and the streets were covered in fresh, fluffy snow.
You closed the blinds again, and as you did, Adam began to stir. He was a light sleeper, so you weren’t surprised that you fiddling with the blinds had woken him.
“Good morning”, he mumbled, still half asleep.
“Good morning, Adam”, you whispered. “I’m sorry I woke you.”
“It’s okay, babe, I just need a minute. I’m still so sleepy.”
You were an early bird, always having plenty of energy in the mornings, but you knew Adam wasn’t. You got out of bed, letting him stay there for a while and wake up in his own time. You then headed to the kitchen to make breakfast. You made some toast, poured a glass of orange juice for yourself and then turned on the kettle to make a cup of coffee for Adam. As you were doing so, he stumbled into the kitchen.
“Hey, watch where you’re going, sleepyhead!”, you said, giggling. He laughed, planting a gentle kiss on your forehead. When the coffee was made, you handed it to him.
“Oh wow, thanks babe”, he said, and then yawned.
“You’re welcome. You seem to really need coffee this morning”, you laughed.
“When don’t I?”, he said.
“True.”
You both sat down at the table, you eating your breakfast and Adam drinking his coffee. You took a few sips of your orange juice and then thought of something.
“Hey, Adam?”, you said.
“Yeah?”
“I just remembered we both have the whole day off today. Is there anything you’d like to do?”
“Hm… You.” He smirked playfully. You choked on your juice, surprised by his answer.
“Well, um… that certainly wasn’t the answer I was expecting”, you laughed. “As great as that sounds, though, we can’t do that all day.”
“Aw, why not?”, he asked.
“Adam!”, you said, laughing even harder. “I was thinking we could have a snow day.”
“That actually sounds really nice”, he said.
“I think so too! But let’s wait until the sun comes up. It’s too dark to go outside right now.” Adam agreed. The two of you sat in comfortable silence for a while as you finished your breakfast.
When you had finished eating, you went to your wardrobe to get changed out of your pyjamas. You put on a sweater and a comfy pair of sweatpants, and then went to the hall to put on your outdoor clothes. When you were all bundled up, you called Adam into the hall.
“Ready for our snow day?”, you asked, smiling.
“Hell yeah!”, he replied, making you laugh. You waited patiently as he got dressed for the snowy weather, and when he was done, you opened the door.
You rushed outside, and while Adam was closing the door, you took the opportunity to roll up a snowball in your hand. You threw it at him, giggling. He immediately turned around in surprise, and then looked around to find you. You had hidden yourself behind a tree, not wanting him to retaliate. However, he spotted you quite quickly. He rolled up an even bigger snowball in his hands and ran towards you. You tried to get away, but you knew it was no use as he was faster than you. You screamed and laughed as he caught up to you, feeling the snowball hit your arm.
“Okay, okay, I give up!”, you said, panting.
“Good”, he said, laughing. That was fun. What do you want to do next?”
“How about making snow angels?”, you suggested.
“That sounds good”, he replied.
You laid down next to each other on the ground, spreading out your arms and legs to make snow angels. When you were done, you got up, admiring the shapes in the snow.
“Pretty”, you said.
“Like you.”
You giggled and gently slapped his arm.
“What? It’s true”, he laughed.
You looked at him. “I love you”, you said.
“I love you too.” You gave him a quick kiss.
“So, what do you wanna do now?”, you asked.
“Hm”, he said thoughtfully. His face lit up when he thought of an idea. “Oh, I know! Let’s build a snowman.”
“Great idea”, you said, grinning.
You rolled up a big ball of snow together. Once you both thought it was large enough, you placed it firmly on the ground. You continued, making a smaller ball and placing it on top of the other one.
“Lucky guy”, Adam said. “He sure has some nice balls.” You burst out laughing.
“Adam!”, you said through laughter. “Do you always have to be so crude?“
“It’s part of my charm”, he said.
“It is”, you giggled.
When the base of the snowman was finished, you moved on to decorating it. You both went inside to look for things to use. You went to the kitchen, opening the fridge and finding a tomato that would be perfect as a nose. You then looked in the cupboard and found a pack of raisins to use for the eyes and mouth. Taking some in your hand, you walked back outside, adding the finishing touches.
Adam came back out shortly after you, carrying a hat and a striped scarf. He wrapped the scarf around the snowman and put the hat on its head.
“Doesn’t he look cosy?”, Adam said, putting his arm around you.
“He really does.”
“Can I take your picture?”, he asked. “I never want to forget this day with you. God, I sound so cheesy right now…”
“Hey! I like cheesy”, you said. “And of course you can. Just make sure you get Frosty in the picture, too.”
“Frosty? Is that what we’re calling him?”
“What? It’s a cute name!”
Adam motioned for you to stand next to the snowman. He then went silent for a moment as he fiddled with his camera.
“Okay, say “Frosty!”
“Frosty!”, you said, grinning as he snapped a picture.
When he had taken the photo, he showed you it.
“It turned out pretty nice, don’t you think?” You nodded. “You have such a pretty smile in this picture”, he said. You blushed and looked down at the ground, smiling.
“You’re the only one who can make me smile that big”, you said. You looked at him. “Thank you, Adam. Today has been lovely so far.”
“It really has. I love Sundays with you”, he said. You hugged him tightly.
After you pulled away, you started to shiver. Adam asked if you wanted to go in, and you thought that was a good idea.
“I’ve had enough of the cold for one day”, you said. Adam laughed.
“Me too. How about we warm ourselves up with some hot chocolate?”, he suggested.
“That sounds great. I’ll make us some.”
You went into the kitchen and opened the cupboard where you kept your mugs. You picked out a mug for each of you and began making the hot chocolate. When it was done, you poured it into the mugs, topping it with whipped cream and some mini marshmallows. You got out a tray and placed the mugs on it, carrying them carefully to the living room.
“Hey, babe”, Adam said as you came into the room. You greeted him back as you placed the tray on the coffee table.
“Wow, this looks nice!”, he said. He reached for a mug and you sat down next to him on the sofa. You sat quietly for a while, sipping your drinks, until you broke the silence.
“Hey, Adam?”
“Yeah, babe?” That nickname always made you feel butterflies in your stomach.
“I love it when you call me that”, you giggled. You waited a moment before you continued.
“I just… I just wanted to let you know how proud I am of you. I know I say that all the time, but I really mean it. What you’ve been through is… unimaginable, Adam. But I’m so glad you’re starting to heal. And I’m so glad we can still have days like this together, despite everything. I love you so much.”
“I love you too”, he said. “You have no idea how much you’ve helped me through all of this. I don’t know where I’d be if it wasn’t for you….” He paused for a moment, looking down at the floor.
“I’ve been in such a bad state. It’s been so hard, and I’m sorry, because I know it’s been hard for you, too. For a while, I thought things would never get better. I thought I’d be stuck like this forever. But you’ve made me realise I can be happy again. And for the first time in a while… I feel hopeful. For the first time in a while, I’m excited for the future. You know why?”, he asked. You shook your head. He took your hands in his and looked at you.
“Because I get to spend it with you.”
