Work Text:

“Come on, Korra, help me out,” Asami looked imploringly at her girlfriend. “You thought about what your wedding would look like when you were a girl, didn’t you?”

Korra shrugged apologetically (and with those shoulders, Asami thought, apology accepted). “Sorry babe, I’m with Bolin and Mako on this one. I was too busy learning avatar stuff when I was a kid. Between learning philosophy and honing my bending skills, I was way too tired to think about arranging bouquets and tasting canopies.”

“Canapes,” Asami corrected automatically.

“And this is why you’re planning our wedding,” Korra joked.

“Wait,” Mako interjected. “Did I miss something? Are you guys engaged?”

“No!” Both women chorused. “We’ve been busy,” Korra added.

“Luckily I had enough fanciful daydreams for the both of us,” Asami mused. “It was always assumed that I would marry well, though Daddy was always clear that it would be someone I chose for myself.”

“I’m just as glad there isn’t some stuck-up rich dirtbag who feels entitled to your hand…” Korra began, “...because then I’d have to bend his ass into next week!” she added with a grin. (“You can’t actually bend time, can you, Korra?” Bolin asked. Korra shrugged. “I dunno, I never–”)

“Anyway,” Asami interrupted, “speaking of which, it’s time for my girlfriend to have a formative childhood experience. Come on, dear, we’re going dress shopping.”

Korra just blushed and grinned and waved goodbye to Mako and Bolin.

“Now, I’m not saying you don’t look good in just traditional Water Tribe garb or in something more casual,” Asami began, sensing Korra’s jitters as they entered the fancy clothier’s shop. “But sometimes you want to wear something a little–”

“--nicer, I know,” Korra grumped.

“I was going to say ‘different,’ Asami said, looping one supportive arm around Korra’s elbow. “Anyway, it doesn’t have to even be a dress. You can get a suit done here, too.”

“Huh, I suppose that’s fair enough.” Korra consented to being led further into the store, where an ancient, bent woman approached them with surprising rapidity.

“Ah, Ms. Sato, so good of you to return! And you’ve brought the Avatar with you, I see! Shopping for both of you today? I have a fresh shipment in from the Fire Nation.” The crone wafted a sleek silk dress at Asami.

“Just Korra today,” Asami said.

“Ooh, that will be a challenge! Choose wisely - something to sparkle and dazzle and distract? Or something to catch an onlooker’s eye and draw them in? Something flashy and futuristic? Or something simple and timeless?” A baffling array of fabrics flew at Korra from all angles; she took a deep breath and remembered her airbending training, letting them float around her as she considered.

“Let’s just try a few on for now,” Korra began. “After all,” she said with a wink as the older woman led her to the changing room, arms filled with taffeta and velvet, “it’s not like you’ve proposed to me yet.”
