Chapter Text
It had been 6 months since Bernie proposed to Serena. She hadn’t planned to do it on the roof of Holby, but something in her heart was telling her to go for it, so she did. That night they celebrated in bed and talked about what they wanted to do for a wedding. Both of them had already done the big wedding thing, which clearly was a waste. They were middle-aged women going into their second marriage, they didn’t want a big fuss.
Bernie suggested they go to the courthouse, but Serena said absolutely not because that was so tacky. Serena suggested in the peace garden at Holby’s and Bernie said politely that no way in hell she would do any kind of ceremony within 500 feet of the hospital, and honestly Serena couldn’t blame her. So many good things happened there, like the two of them meeting, but also so many traumatic things happened. She had every right to not want to get married there. Plus, it probably would’ve put a curse on their marriage anyway.
After months of going back and forth between venues, halls, and churches, they both agreed on doing the ceremony in Ric Griffin’s backyard. He lived on a 5,000 square foot lot, so there was plenty of room for all of their family and friends. They didn’t want the whole thing to be extravagant, especially Bernie. She would’ve been fine doing it in a parking lot and partying at her favorite bar, but this wasn’t all about her. Luckily, she and Serena had similar taste and were able to agree on a lot of things.
The wedding was 2 days away and everything was done and ready. Bernie & Serena we’re relaxing on the couch.
“Are you ok with all of the wedding plans?” Bernie asked.
“Of course I am. Why wouldn’t I be?” Serena replied.
“You won’t be upset that it’s not fancy?”
“I could never be upset. I don’t want something big. I’ve already been there and done that and it wasn’t that great, really,” she said. Maybe Bernie wanted something bigger. “Are you ok with it?”
“Oh yeah. I feel the same as you. I didn’t want a big wedding in the first place, but Marcus’ parents insisted on paying so I felt like I couldn’t say no. This is exactly how I want it to be. Something simple yet beautiful with just our close family and friends as I marry the love of my life,” the blonde smiled and kissed Serena on the head.
“Good. I think it’s going to be beautiful no matter what. Everyone is going to love the simplicity of it. After everything we’ve been through over the years, we need something simple to look back on,” Serena said.
“It’s going to be simple, like us,” Bernie said before snuggling closer to Serena.
