Work Text:

"Now what is this we have here hmm?"

The curtains drew back then, filling the room-painted a nice powdered blue with the Uchiha clan symbol painted on the door, a shelf with bedtime stories and well loved stuffed animals and framed photos of family no longer alive yet who loved so much. There's a very quiet hum from the bed under the window as the small child under the blankets with spiky black hair and holding a magpie plushy tightly to himself as wrinkled gentle hands gently shake him.

The little four year old, turning five, giggles a bit as he's given another gentle little shake from his grandma.

"Is that the birthday boy sleeping in on his special day?"

The child giggles as his gentle grandma gently brushes his soft black hair and gives him the warmest smile, sitting on the edge of Obito's bed as she gently leans over to kiss the top of his head.

"Mornin' Grandma," he smiles at her as she smiles down at him.

"Good morning, magpie. What are you doing sleeping in on such a big day?"

Obito shrugs as he hugs his Magpie, "I'm sleepy, Grandma. An' so is Maggie"

"Is that so? Oh well then, I suppose the birthday boy is too sleepy to eat some of grandma's pancakes?"

That has him sitting up with a gasp, his precious plush held snug in his atms, "The savory ones?!"

"Oh yes all the savory pancakes you could ever want. Now go get dressed and I'll have those pancakes ready when you come down."

Obito squeals excitedly as he hops from his bed in his pajamas, placing his magpie plush Maggie on to the top of his dresser as he digs through his clothes listening to his grandma walking to go and make his favorite breakfast in the whole world. He hums as he pulls on his favorite blue t-shirt and pulls on a pair of white shorts before slipping on his little slippers that have cats on them. He was so excited!

"Maggie you're gonna love Nana's savorite pancakes! She puts really taste stuff in them like like green stuffs and seasonings!" he takes his precious plushy to him and giggles as he holds his precious toy to him; the last one his parents gave to him before they went to the Pure Lands. He hums as he holds her under his arm to rush out to go enjoy his breakfast.

His Grandma did so much for him especially on his birthdays. He notices she always tries to make sure to have good things to wake up to; breakfast he likes, her gentle way to wake him up, how she always seems to be able to read his mood when he wakes. If he was sick she always knew and would have the soup, tea and other gentle remedies to help him feel better. If he woke up sad she would take out his favorite comfort blanket and cut him fresh apples with a dollop of peanut butter so he can have a treat and give him a hug before letting him decide waht they can do that day.

Today he was happy; not just because he got to sleep in a bit later than normal but because it was his birthday! He was turning five years old, having savory pancakes and he really wants to go outside with her today to walk the trails. He really wants to see if he can find any corvids out there again like he did the magpies!

He was so excited!

"Grandma!" he hugs her legs with a happy giggle, smiling up at her as she reaches down to gently ruffle his hair to make it messy.

She smiles down at him, her old eyes soft and warm, "Ah there's the birthday boy and his trusty magpie companion," she leans down to hug him and his plush happily, giving him a kiss on the forehead, "Go and sit I'll bring you your first plate soon-"

"One for Maggie too?"

"-oh yes, we can't forget Maggie," she hums as she takes two plates into her hands with a smile that she would fill with her popular green onion pancakes that her sweet grandson just couldn't get enough of. Ah it was such a happy day when Obito was born...she remembers how loud he wailed until his mother was holding him in her arms safe and sound.

Ah she misses her son and daughter in law...they both were such kind and gentle people. Obito should be celebrating with them there too as well if not for how they passed. At least in a way the best parts of them took the shape of Obito as he was happily kicking his legs while waiting in his favorite chair; the one that let him see out the window at Konoha as people were passing by; not a care in the world as Grandma gently put down a glass of milk before putting down a plate stacked with four savory pancakes and a saucer of soy sauce for him to dip them in.

Calmly she moves to sit across from him and his beloved plush that he has kept with him since birth; sewn into the shape of a magpie with little white markings, and one glassy eye intact on the left while the other had long been lost from Obito's infant days. She did everything to keep the plush intact to the best of her ability even as her old hands were growing shaky.

"Grandma?"

"Yes dear?"

"You wanna know what I want for my brithday?"

"What my dear?"

Obito smiles at her as he picks up his chop sticks with a warm smile, "I want you to live a long long time so you can see me become an amazin' shinobi!"

Grandma put a hand over her chest, her eyes grow glassy and almost teary as she smiles at him. Oh he was such a sweet soul...even if she can't gurantee it she would do everything to make sure she could see his dream com true one day. She gently reaches up and gives him another head pat and smiles down at him, "Anything for you my dear boy."

...

The graves of Konoha are always carefully catalogued.

The Anbu made sure of that, as they recorded the deaths of soldiers in the war to ensure they were buried within the correct families, while the hospitals dealt with the civilians. In the end the records were stored for public knowledge unless they were a Hokage or an important clan head with special jutsu.

Amongst the Uchiha's gravestones, footsteps quietly walked. There haven't been as many new ones since the massacre-the only ones left being the one who helped Konoha's hero end the wall and...well the one that is barely ever spoken about as he had asked the current Hokage to make sure he would be able to live out the rest of his life in peace.

He quietly walks past the fresher graves, passing further and further back..until he saw her name as clear as day.

Obito, now celebrating his thirty fifth birthday quietly stands over Grandma's grave; holding his old Magpie he had discovered lovingly stowed away in her house that had remained untouched all these years. He then very gently placed down a small vase with a single flower-one of Grandma's favorites-and slowly sits down with Maggie the magpie held in his hands. He then pulled out a small offering plate of the green onion pancakes.

He had obviously tried to keep them from burning though they were crispier than he would like.

"..Hey Grandma," the scarred man sighs, his breath watery as he pushes the white hair back from his face, "...The birthday boy is home."
