Her new house was cool, there was something a bit grunge about living inside a cave in Marceline's opinion. Okay it wasn't as cool as the treehouse, but Finn and Jake were living there now and even though she hadn't known them long she wasn't going to kick them out.
And besides, the place now felt more like it was theirs than hers.
She lay in her bed for hours, with headphones in her ears at full volume. She didn't know exactly what made her turn off the sound at that moment. But it was just in time because as soon as she turn off she realized that there was another person inside the house, and she could hear the very distinct sound of footsteps coming from the living room.
Marceline floated into the room slowly, already making her form grow, ready to attack the invader at any moment.
When the intruder saw her they both screamed for a second. Although not exactly out of fear.
Marceline returned to her normal form. While the pink princess composed herself.
“By Glob Bonnie, don't you ring the doorbell anymore?”
“You don’t have a doorbell.”
“Knock the door then.”
"I did it. You did not answer it."
“I had my headphones on. And besides, if I didn't answer, most likely I would have left and you should come back another time, not break into my house.”
“I knew you were here and when you didn't respond I was worried that maybe you had forgotten to drink red and were too weak to move.”
Marceline felt guilty for a second, but then she thought about it some more.
“How did you know I was here?”
This time it was Bonnibel who looked a little embarrassed.
“I...I just knew.”
“So still spying on people. Nice."
The princess decided to ignore the comment.
“You should have told me you were back.”
"Why Princess ? Did you miss me when I was away?”
She hesitated for a second. And if she had said yes, probably all the resentment that Marceline had held in the years since her departure from that part of Ooo would have evaporated.
“I'm just relieved to see you're okay. There are many dangers in this world, and you have been away too long.”
“Well, thanks for worrying I guess. Anyway, why did you come here in the first place?”
“I heard rumors that you had returned, and I wanted to see how you were living. Just that."
“Well, you saw how I’m living. Any thoughts?"
“It’s cozy. For a cave. I think...I should leave.”
For a second Marceline thought about saying that she didn't need to go, that they could talk. But the words were stuck in her throat.
And taking this silence as an answer, the princess went to the door, before leaving she said:
“Be careful Marceline.”
“I’m always careful Bonnie.”
And Marceline watched her leave.
There were many reasons why Marceline had returned, but seeing if there was any way to rebuild what they had had was one of the main ones. But it was so easy to fall back into the same patterns of the past. It seemed impossible to think that they wouldn't get close again eventually. But also in another time she would have found it impossible that they would be as far apart as they were now.
Bonnibel closed the door, and walked out of the cave. And only when she was too far away for the vampire to hear did she dare to say: “Of course I missed you.”
