"In this hour, I do not believe that any darkness will endure."

Summary:

Some days are hard, but having your Baby Girl to come home to always helps.

Notes:

This isn't really part of my Missed Opportunities series, just a little something that came to mind from the Tolkien quote that was the prompt for day 7 of the Storytelling Collective's Flash Fiction February challenge.

Work Text:

There are days when Derek comes home late after flying in from a case, bone tired and heavy-hearted. There are days when he comes home late, numb from the things he's seen. There are days when he comes home late, feeling dirty, as though the grossness of the day's events have somehow rubbed of on him. Hell, there are even days he comes home late, frustrated and bored from long hours catching up on paperwork.

Whatever kind of day it is, he will find Penelope in the bed, her phone still in her hand playing a cat video or a video lecture on Doctor Who as she sleeps, not having quite managed to wait up for him once any hypothetical danger has passed, and he will feel that-somehow—it's all going to be all right.
