Under the sky with you

Work Text:

“I’m gonna do it!” Izuku declared in utter delight as he glanced to the side of the road.

“You’re an idiot.”

“And you’re no fun.”

“I just don’t have to be an idiot to have fun,” Katsuki argued.

“Whatever, I’m still gonna do it.”

“Go ahead then.”

There was a short moment of hesitation as Izuku pondered the potential consequences of his actions.

He took a deep breath, tasting the crisp air.

“Okay. I’m doing it.”

“So you keep saying.”

With one last glance at Kacchan, who just raised an eyebrow at him, Izuku charged forward. One, two, three steps, then he took a leap. He kicked off the ground, turned mid-air, and stretched out like a starfish. The fall was short but not any less satisfying. For a second or two, he felt weightless even without the use of float. The next, everything turned white.

The moment he landed, powdered snow puffed up around him like a cloud, blocking his vision. It swirled and twirled in the faint wind before fluttering down all around him.

There was no stopping the laughter bubbling up inside him. Not even the shiver running down his spine as the cold snow melted against his flushed skin.

It was refreshing, even.

“Idiot,” Katsuki huffed, but Izuku could hear the amusement in his tone.

The sky was so blue, too. The delicate kind of blue you only see in the winter, and together with the sun filtering through white-covered treetops, it was a magical sight.

Izuku’s laughter subsided into a content sigh.

He wished Kacchan could see this.

Actually, maybe Izuku could fix that.

“The only idiot here,” Izuku said as he moved his arms and legs in sweeping motions to create a snow angel, “is you , missing out on all the fun.”

A snowball hit him in the chest.

“Who said I’m missing out,” Katsuki snickered.

“Kacchan!” Izuku protested. He tried to get up in the knee-deep snow only to be hit in the shoulder by another snowball. “That’s unfair!”

“Oh yeah?” Kacchan was clearly mocking him now. “I thought we were talking about having fun, and,” Izuku took a snowball to the face this time and sputtered. “This is pretty fucking fun.”

“No,” Izuku was finally steady on his knees, kneading his own snowball between his gloved hands. “You’re being mean!”

It was almost embarrassing with how much distance Izuku missed his target. In his defense, Katsuki could move freely on the plowed road while Izuku was still stuck in the snow.

So when Katsuki sidestepped yet another one of Izuku’s attacks, he figured it was only fair that he upped his game. With Katsuki busy packing more snow from the ground, black tendrils shot out of Izuku heading straight for the blond.

All those times playing Catch-a-Kacchan finally came in handy. There was an angry yelp of surprise followed by a gritted-out “fuck” as they wrapped around Katsuki and pulled him up into the air.

“Izuku! Lemme go!”

A giggle made a puff of mist in the cold air as Izuku watched Katsuki kick and struggle in a useless attempt to free himself.

“I swear to god, if you don’t put me down—”

Thud.

Another cloud of white snow swirled up around them as Katsuki landed on his back right next to where Izuku was sitting.

“Fuck you.”

“What?” Izuku felt his cheeks straining from how hard he was smiling. “I put you down, didn’t I?”

Katsuki narrowed his eyes up at him. “I didn’t mean like—”

There was some snow beginning to melt right under Kacchan’s eye; it threatened to drip down his cheek. Leaning forward, Izuku reached out to brush it off. Even through the fabric of his glove, Izuku could feel that Kacchan was warm. The winter costume was doing its job then. Good.

Like they saw something for the first time, Katsuki’s eyes widened.

“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Izuku asked, happy that Kacchan could finally see the clear blue sky.

There was a moment of silence, the damped silence that only existed when covered in snow.

Only Kacchan wasn't looking at it, instead his gaze was resting on Izuku.

“Yeah,” he breathed.

Izuku let out a light laugh. “You’re looking the wrong way, silly.”

“I’m not.”

Warmth suddenly enveloped Izuku’s cheek at the touch of Katsuki’s ungloved hand. He hummed, leaning into it and brushing his nose against the smooth palm. With a slow breath he inhaled the scent that was Kacchan.

“Silly,” Izuku said again.

“Idiot,” Katsuki smiled.
