Catching a glimpse of his friend CraftyCorn expressing herself with art wasn't at all uncommon, she did it all the time. Even if she was encouraged by people to do different things from time to time, she still chose what made her happiest. That was something Dogday admired about her; she did what she knew was best for her.
However, drawing outside on a windy day isn't exactly smart, especially not if you're using a cheap sheet of paper to draw. She still did it anyways, though, because the sun made her beam, and drawing made her beam.
Dogday fidgeted and tapped his paws on the windowsill, watching her draw while laying happily underneath the blossoming spruce tree, kicking her hooves around in the air while doing so. He loved to see his friends happy, it warmed his heart and his soul. His attention was taken off of CraftyCorn when he heard the door to their shared house creak open.
Turning his head to face the source of the sound, Catnap met his gaze. Another one of his best friends, who he cared incredibly deeply for. Truth be told, he had an especially soft spot for Catnap. He might even say that he was his favorite.
Catnap pattered over to the couch, sitting down, manuevering his incredibly long tail so that he could sit comfortably. Dogday never really thought to ask him about it out of respect, but he always wondered how he managed to live with it. Did it not get everywhere? He couldn't imagine how many times people would accidentally step on it.
Dogday scooted over closer to his best friend, hardly alarmed by how quiet he was. It wasn't strange by any means for Catnap to be quiet, he usually was. "Hey, psst, Catnap,"
"Mmmm, yeah?" Catnap answered, although he wasn't feeling particularly energetic in the moment. He felt a little tired. He couldn't fully bring himself to form a word at first, so he kind of just hummed. Dogday thought it sounded funny, though.
Snickering a little bit, he reiterated that. "Mmmmyeah?" Dogday mimicked in a light hearted teasing manner. Catnap smiled fondly at his friend enjoying something as silly as that. He decided to entertain it and play along.
"Mmmm.. yeah??" Catnap hummed right back, wanting to see if it would get any reaction out of Dogday, which it did. He raised a paw over to his mouth, laughing warmly and contently with his friend.
"MmmmmMMmmMyeah?" Dogday got out in choked laughter, putting bolder emphasis on random parts. Catnap could hardly help but giggle like an idiot at it.
"You're so funny!" Dogday praised, making Catnap innocently blush and do a silly hand movement at Dogday as he put a paw on his own cheek.
"You are!"
"I'm so glad we're friends, Catnap!" Dogday smiled, fidgeting with his paw again, tapping them on the soft fabric of the couch in glee.
"We are not friends, what'd'ya talking about?" Catnap teased, flicking his tail a bit.
Dogday just giggled at that, doing a hand flip at Catnap as a response to his teasing. "Do you think we'll be friends forever?"
"Oh, I don't know about thaaaaaaaat. "
Dogday snickered, trying to speak, but he couldn't get his words out over his giggles. Catnap found it amusing. "Of course we will! Nothing will ever come between us, right?"
His orange dog friend was finally able to stop snickering and face Catnap again, being able to actually form words. Dogday moved his paw over to Catnap's, who normally wasn't particularly keen on physical touch, but he made an exception for Dogday. He delicately held Catnap's paw, softly. "Nope! Nothing would ever come between us!"
The memory of their sweet and innocent past together swam through Dogday's mind like a hungry piranha, eager to gnaw and tear and bite away at whatever hints of closure there might have been for him.
Catnap smiled whenever Dogday would hold his paw like that. It was a smile full of warmth. The one Dogday was looking at now just felt so cold and empty. Blood was pouring out of Catnap's big, empty grin that crept across his whole face, that wouldn't ever leave, not even when Catnap was mutilating who used to be his best friend. Not even in death, apparently.
Dogday limped closer to Catnap's corpse using his paws, and looked at him. There was a big hole in the back of his head that signified that must have been how he was killed. For a moment, Dogday wished he could still call Catnap his friend. Even after everything that happened.
The gnashing memory of happier times continued to cycle in his mind that's otherwise empty. He wishes they were still in that house, still laughing about dumb goofy things. Still making those sappy promises to each other. He wishes Catnap was still his angel.
