acts of service

Summary:

“I told you.” Jo groaned, coughing from her spot at her bed in her dorm. “I’m fine.” She let out.

Brick, who has been putting a wet cloth on her forehead, shook his head. “Nonsense cadet. I must take care of all my teammates.” He declared.

Jo rolled her eyes. God, he was persistent wasn’t he?

“Fine.” She grumbled. “That doesn’t mean that we’re friends.” She crossed her arms before another coughing fit hit her.

Work Text:

Jo never got sick, ever.

She always made sure she was healthy so she could continue doing what she loved. Being active was honestly one of her favorite things to do. She also got to look strong in front of all of her peers, especially Eva who was the senior captain.

She had always admired her, the older girl was everything she wished to be. So she was overjoyed when Eva announced that she was gonna choose a new captain since she was graduating. She had to take the job immediately.

Of course, fucking Lightning was also interested on captainship, she wasn’t surprised since he always got in the way of what Jo wanted. However they were still friends.

What she didn't expect was that Eva would choose Brick Mcarthur to be the captain. She thought it was just because Brick and Eva were cousins but she explained that Brick had everything she needed for a captain, which made Jo fume.

She hated him, she swore she did.

Then why did Brick decide to take care of her when she was sick?

“I told you.” Jo groaned, coughing from her spot at her bed in her dorm. “I’m fine.” She let out.

Brick, who has been putting a wet cloth on her forehead, shook his head. “Nonsense cadet. I must take care of all my teammates.” He declared.

Jo rolled her eyes. God, he was persistent wasn’t he?

“Fine.” She grumbled. “That doesn’t mean that we’re friends.” She crossed her arms before another coughing fit hit her.

“That is alright with me.” Brick shot her a smile which made her stomach flip. What was going on with her? He took her away from her captainship because what he was a nice, loyal, great leader? Jo needed to stop thinking about that.

Whatever this was, it needed to stop.

Jo stayed silent as Brick checked her temperature, she wanted out but somehow Brick taking care of her was… kinda nice.

“Why are you even doing this?” Jo asked, her voice groggy from her throat hurting. Brick stopped what he was doing for a second as he turned to her direction.

“I told you, a true soldier never leaves anyone behind like this.” He said saluting before slowly sighing. “I do feel bad for earlier.” He admitted.

Jo couldn’t help but scoff. “Because your cousin gave you the captaincy instead of me? I’m over it.” She declared. She really wasn’t over it but he didn’t need to know that.

Brick paused but then shrugged. “Still… you seemed pissed over it.” He explained giving her a reassuring smile.

Jo glanced away for a second. “I just expected it to go a different way I guess.” She finally spoke before sighing. “Eva is right. You are a good leader. I’m just a sore loser I guess.” She shrugged.

Brick didn’t say anything for a second as he then slowly sat down next to Jo.

“I didn’t think Eva would choose me either.” He admitted. “I am glad to have the opportunity but.” Jo stopped him.

“No buts. You fucking earned this.” She said weakly. “I wouldn’t normally ever let myself be defeated by you but Eva chose you for a reason. Even if you piss your pants sometimes.” She joked before coughing again.

Brick turned red as he gave her a playful punch. “Hey!” Jo exclaimed. “I’m the sick one here, unibrow. You gotta treat me with respect.” Brick nodded at that, saluting immediately.

“Yes Jo!” He exclaimed, making Jo smile as she coughed once more.

“Fuck, maybe I am sick.” Jo finally admitted. Brick stood up to check her temperature. “Do not fret Jo! Brick Mcarthur is on your service!” He exclaimed, making Jo scoff to herself with a soft smile.

Somehow she never wanted him to change.
