Chapter Text
Dream was in his shared room with his sister Nightmare, she had the idea that they should switch clothes as a dare. Dream declined multiple times but eventually gave into Nightmares nagging.
Soon Dream stood in front of the tall mirror with Nightmare by his side, he looked at the long dark purple dress he was wearing with a light purple coat over his shoulders. While Nightmare looked at herself with her brother's long pants and yellow collar shirt, smiling happily at her new look.
Nightmare had her long black hair tucked up in a hat while Dream had his short hair flattened as much as it could to make it look longer.
“Hey… Being a boy kind of suits me…” She said jokingly, posing in front of the mirror in various different ways. Dream however, looked at himself in astonishment, he didn’t know how to feel about wearing a dress. It felt… Strange? He didn’t like the feelings rushing through his head and wanted to get out of Nightmares outfit and back into his own.
“Okay okay, let's switch back now, Night”
“Why? Can’t I just enjoy this for a few minutes? I don’t like that stupid dress!” Nightmare whines, refusing to take off her brother's outfit.
“You can borrow some of my extra pants for picking up worms or something, I don’t like wearing a dress eather!” That wasn’t true, but it just felt like the right thing to say.
They eventually switched back except with Nightmare wearing Dream's extra pants, and she seemed happier ever since.
As for Dream, he kept thinking about the dress, it wasn’t his colour, but the way it felt is what mattered to him. Dream didn’t want to think about it any longer, so he distracted himself. He distracted himself with books, the tree, getting rid of all negativity, and working for more than 100 years, but he couldn’t ignore it now.
Dream was sitting at his desk, deep in his own thoughts and the memory of the day he wore Nightmare’s dress. At this time he was usually doing paperwork and stressing himself out to unintentionally stop the memory from popping back up, but there was no work to do, for once he finished all the paperwork for the Justice Reigns, and was now left with his thoughts.
‘Well… Nightmare turned out to be trans after the incident, so what does that mean for me? But he liked it! I didn’t like wearing that dress!... Did I?’ Dream leaned back in his chair and stared up at the ceiling, contemplating something he should have thought about a long time ago, if he was trans like Nightmare.
*A little later*
Dream was now in his room after hours, laying face down in his bed with his wings spread out. He was devastated that he could feel his flat chest against the mattress.
‘Why can’t I have breasts like the other girls-’
‘Oh my stars, don’t think that, Dream! What the hell is wrong with you!?’
Dream groaned and rolled over on his back, wrapping himself with his golden wings to provide himself some sort of possible comfort. “This is ridiculous” he said out loud to no one in particular.
Dream remembered that there was a storage closet in JR with a bunch of used old things that random employees threw in there. Dream didn’t mind that his employees just threw whatever in there, he did it from time to time when he had old files he didn’t need. Maybe someone threw an old dress in there.. Not because he wanted to! Dream just wanted to prove that he didn’t like dresses.
Dream pushed himself up on the bed and placed his feet on the floor to stand. He then grabbed his jacket and made his way out the door into the halls of JR, being as quiet as he could to not attract attention from the employees working the night shift.
The positive guardian walked along the halls and into an elevator to go down to the first floor.
*insert elevator seen here bc i’m such a great writer*
Dream opened the door to the storage closet, shivering and wrapping his coat tighter around himself. All the storage closets in JR didn’t have heating mainly because it was a fire hazard if papers are placed on top of a vent, why would they have heating anyway? It’s a storage closet
Dream however was wishing they had vents, it was colder in the storage closet then it probably was outside. He just wanted to get the box he wanted and get out.
“This is an awful fucking idea” Dream said as he quickly started to search the dusty boxes for the possibility that one employee threw a dress away or something.
“But I don’t want to get a dress from a shop, people will think I’m gay” Dream lifted up the lid of all the boxes, he even checked the ones that had no possibility of clothing being in there, eventually coming across one that was labelled, “Halloween costumes! 1945/10/31” Damn, this box was old! Still not older than Dream though, it was actually around the time he started the Justice Reigns.
Dream opened the box to see if there was some sort of dress in it, once confirmed, he picked up the box and walked out of the storage closet into the heated halls. He sighed in relief as his body was instantly warmed up.
The guardian made a quick, totally not suspicious move to the elevator, stepping inside to go up back to his room.
Suddenly though, the elevator stopped on the fourth floor, opening to reveal an owl monster in a lab coat, stepping in and pressing the button for the sixth floor.
‘Oh shit. Oh shit. Oh shit. Oh shit-’ “What are you doing up, lord Dream?” she asked, making Dream sweat more.
“I was just taking some old papers for a meeting” Dream lied, keeping a straight face the whole time. He was a good liar when he wanted to be, you have to lie a lot when you’re the owner of a big corporation.
The owl adjusted her glasses, about to say something before the elevator opened for the sixth floor, making her sigh. “Don’t lose sleep over this” was the only thing she said before she stepped out, the doors closing behind her.
Dream let out a sigh of relief, hoping he wouldn’t run into anyone else. And luckily he didn’t.
He closed the door to his bedroom and placed the box down on his bed, rummaging through it to find the dress he saw earlier. He eventually pulled it out and held it before him so he could view it fully.
The dress was a long ball gown with small puffy sleeves, like the dresses he saw the rich women wearing in his time. Despite it being based off of the wealthy people 124 years ago, the costume was made of cheap fabric and was obviously bought from spirit Halloween.
Dream examined every detail of the dress before putting it on over his pajamas. He looked down at the long dress covering his legs before turning towards the mirror. He looked at himself up and down, his mind slowly starting to panic. He… He liked it… It didn’t look good on him but it felt right…
The positive guardian wasn’t feeling too positive at the moment, he felt a mixture of feeling glad he had found what made him happy, and feeling devastated that it felt right.
He clenched his fists at the cheap fabric, stuck in between tearing the dress off and keeping it on. Dream was so confused and understanding at the same time.
Dream eventually took off the dress and threw it on the floor along with the box, crashing into his bed and wrapping his wings around himself.
“... Why do I have to be trans…” He mumbled before the late night caught up to him, falling into a deep sleep.
