Work Text:
It was 12:03 PM. She should’ve been here three minutes ago, and each minute that went by without her showing up only stressed you out more. Not because of the time itself, but the person who was expected to show up.
It had taken every ounce of your courage and strength to ask Mayor Pauline out on a Valentine’s Day date, and you nearly fell over in shock when she said yes. Pauline was gorgeous, intelligent, capable, thoughtful, and did you mention gorgeous yet? Why on earth would she want to go out with you of all people?
That was a couple of days ago, and right now you were sitting in the Punch Out Pizzeria, waiting for her to arrive. Thankfully, business was pretty slow on Valentine’s Day, probably because everyone was watching movies or having meals at fancy places, so you weren’t worried about anyone interrupting or looking for gossip on the mayor’s date.
Suddenly, the door to the pizzeria swung open, and in came Mayor Pauline, wearing her usual red business suit and broad-brimmed hat. Your heart did a quadruple-backflip when she made eye contact with you and gave you a wink.
“Hello,” she said gently, sitting down on a chair across from you, “Sorry I’m late, traffic was a real pain today.”
“Um…y-yeah,” you stammered, trying your absolute best not to turn into a babbling mess, “Traffic’s p-pretty annoying.”
“Are you alright?” Pauline asked, her voice tinged with concern, “You look awfully pale.”
“N-no! No, I’m fine,” you said, quickly straightening up, “I-I’m just a bit nervous, that’s all.”
“I understand,” Pauline gave you a sweet, heart-melting smile, “I imagine many see me as unapproachable due to my profession. Am I right?”
“I…I suppose,” you shrugged, “Mayor Pauline-”
“Don’t call me by my title,” Pauline interrupted, still speaking in a friendly tone, “Just call me Pauline. Don’t think of me as your superior, think of me as just another woman.”
“Okay,” you nodded, starting to get more comfortable talking to her, “So, why did you want us to meet in the pizzeria? There are plenty of other, nicer restaurants or diners we could eat at.”
“I eat at those places all the time,” Pauline laughed warmly, a sound that was pure music to your ears, “I hardly ever visit more casual food shops, my advisors claim that it would make me appear less authoritative.”
“That’s stupid,” you said, giggling slightly, “Screw what your advisors say, you should be able to eat as much pizza as you want!”
“I very much agree,” Pauline chuckled.
A few minutes later, the waitress arrived with your pizzas, and the two of you took a break in conversation to eat. The pizza was delicious, but you barely paid attention to your food, as all your focus was on the beautiful woman in front of you. Somehow, Pauline managed to make eating pizza of all things look classy, and not just because of her sharp attire. She was the only person you had ever seen eat pizza with a fork and knife, which you figured would look ridiculous if it was anyone else doing it, but Pauline made it look elegant.
After she was done, Pauline turned her attention back to you, an amused look on her face.
“What?” you asked, confused. Did you do something wrong?
“Oh, it’s nothing,” Pauline stifled a small giggle, “You just have a small blob of sauce on your cheek.”
“Oh dear,” you sighed, “I’m sorry, I must look-”
“Don’t worry about it, I’ll get it for you,” Pauline smiled warmly as she reached over to wipe the sauce blob off of your cheek.
“Um…thank you,” you murmured, your face turning redder than the sauce. Why was this woman so perfect?
Afterwards, the two of you continued to chat. Pauline seemed to be curious about everything you did, and you definitely wanted to know more about her, so it was a very long, very detailed conversation. It turned out that you both shared a lot of hobbies, like playing soccer, singing, bike riding, scuba diving, and Mario Kart. You were especially surprised to find out that she was a writer in her spare time, and had several unfinished theater manuscripts in her drawer. You told her that she should finish them and get those into production, and she asked if you would like to help her with them, to which you would be more than happy to.
Soon enough, it came time for Pauline to leave, as she had important matters to get to back at her office.
“I’m sorry I can’t stay longer, I really enjoyed this date,” she said.
“Y-you did?” you asked, suddenly remembering that this was supposed to be a Valentine’s Day date.
“Of course I did,” Pauline smiled sweetly, “Call me again soon, I’d be happy to go on a second date when my schedule clears up.”
“Y-yes, that would be great!” you said, “So…does this make you my Valentine?”
“Only if it makes you mine,” Pauline giggled warmly.
Suddenly, she placed her hands on the sides of your head and pulled you in for a kiss. It wasn’t a quick one either, she held you there for a while, her plump red lips softly pressing against yours, her fingers running through your hair. You melted into the kiss, placing your hands on her shoulders and letting her bend you backwards slightly as she leaned forward. You’d fantasized about kissing Pauline multiple times before, but actually having her kiss you felt even better than you’d imagined.
“Thank you for inviting me here, I had a wonderful time,” Pauline whispered after she pulled away.
“You’re welcome, Pauline,” you gave her a grateful smile, “See you soon.”
“See you soon, Valentine,” Pauline smiled back.
She planted one more kiss on your lips, then turned around and walked out the pizzeria door. You sat there for a minute, processing the turn of events. Not only did you just go on a date with her, but she also kissed you multiple times and asked you out on a second date? You had no idea what in the world you did to deserve her, but if this is what Valentine’s Day brings, you certainly couldn’t complain.
