Work Text:
There is something poetic to be said about, simply, languages.
The entire existence of human relationships, of all relationships, is based on communication. That has been true for all of time. Language after language-all but one had been snuffed out. That along with everything humanity had built for millions of years.
But Senku, he carried some languages with him into the new age, the new stone world. Of course he didn't know every language. Many that were documented will never be seen again. But with all 7 billion humans, he will bring back countless languages.
Starting with Morse Code.
Of course, not all languages are spoken verbally. Most people don't understand how useful, versatile, nonverbal languages could be. Certainly when you're in the middle of a war.
For this reason, Senku had expected that teaching the only other human from the modern age Morse Code would not be simple. Fortunately for him, Gen had picked it up quite quick. It was especially helpful when they were capturing Homura.
Unexpectedly, Gen had become quite fond of Morse Code. With how private the two of them are, it was quite convenient.
Senku was still in the process of mapping the night sky, as it did change semi-often. He did it in his free time, it was relaxing. Everyone finally had a chance to relax before the war. With a hot air balloon made and a three star chef revived, things were looking promising. But sometimes, even Senku loses himself in the moment.
He felt a light tapping on his hand, bringing him back along with the weight of the person leaning on his back. He noticed he had stopped charting for a moment, which is probably what spurred it on. He took another moment to realize it was the familiar Morse Code.
You OK?
Of course, Morse Code did have its limits. Long sentences were a pain to understand, let alone create. Senku and Gen already knew both English and Japanese, as they've both gone overseas, learning one of the most common languages was useful. Not only that, many scientific books are written in English.
Senku had taken the liberty of teaching Gen both Morse Code and Wabun Code, since either one wouldn't be unexpected to be used in their previous predicament. It wasn't an excuse to see that focused look on Gen's face when he learns new things, no, it was useful for the war. It was only rational.
Senku let out an amused breath of air.
"Worried?" He whispered a tease into the fragile, quiet night.
"Not me," Gen replied equally quietly, his hand still resting on Senku's.
Thinking, Senku messaged simply, after moving their hands to a position where he could also respond.
It's going to be okay.
Damn mentalist and his uncanny ability to tell when people are troubled. Though, Senku supposed that was his job. It wasn't too much of a stretch to understand that, even with the months that have passed, Tsukasa still made him waver.
I know that,
he responded with all the confidence he convinced himself he had. Of course he knew, with ten billion percent certainty, that everything would turn out fine. But he was still human. And all humans have their doubts.
Do you?
And with that question, Gen removed his hand to shuffle around for a bit, seemingly looking for something. Senku grieved the loss of the warm hand.
He could tell Gen had found it when he felt the light brush of paper against his skin. Senku leaned back from the telescope, careful enough to not bump straight into Gen. He tilted his head to the side, and was faced with a red, puffy, bright colored ruffled flower. In the dark night, with the only light source being the stars, the flower shined like the sun.
On closer inspection, it was paper.
"A Carnation? You made that?" Senku asked, glancing at Gen who was now facing him. An emotion beyond words shown in the mentalist's eyes.
"No, I bought it from Sekaido," Gen said sarcastically, but the harsh words fall flat when paired with the soft expression.
Senku made a noncommittal sound, plucking the paper made craft from Gen's hand as the other snickered.
Morse Code is not the only language that is nonverbal. Hanakotoba, the language of flowers. Conveying a message without the use of words. A red carnation, fascination, love, admiration. Senku knew this was the closest Gen would get to saying such things directly.
For all the mentalist danced around, leading people in circles with his words, it seemed the most truthful things he said were not spoken at all.
