Work Text:
A dull aching throbbed in Sunny's chest as she warped back to Town of Fobo. She hadn't cried yet, but a feeling of numbness had spread through her mind and body, clinging to her like a strange mist.
She didn't really know what to feel. Their Pa was gone, just like that, by the hands of another egg, and no one seemed to care. Sunny had noticed how others spoke about her Pa, how could she not. She saw how they never take him seriously, the “jokes” which feel more like thinly veiled insults. She wasn't dumb, and neither was their pa. He saw it too, but he didn't care, in fact he seemed to believe them, or at least believe he deserved their ridicule.
She held her bunny close to her chest and climbed down the ladder carefully. Sunny opened the doors to her and Leo's shared room gently, not wanting to wake the older child. She was met by the familiar sight of orange and purple curtains. Through a gap in the purple curtain, they could spy Leo's sleeping form, curled up in his large bed.
Ignoring this, she walked briskly over to her own closet, pulling the curtain aside and quickly changing into her nightie. As Sunny stood alone in her room they realised something. Something that had been clawing at her heart since she left the group.
She really, really didn't want to be alone tonight. After thinking for a moment, she tiptoed over to Leo's curtain and pulled it aside, and after another moment, this time of hesitation, they slipped into the dark room silently.
Leo's usual red cap was sitting on the nightstand and he was cuddling his cow plushie while breathing deeply, already in her REM cycle. Sunny watched for a moment, scared to even move in case she woke Leo up.
After a few moments she got her courage up enough to take a few steps toward the bed. She pulled the covers back and climbed in slowly. She was originally planning on just staying at the edge of the bed, giving Leo plenty of space, but the moment she got in range, Leo's arms shot out and wrapped around her quickly.
They muttered something under their breath in Spanish, which Sunny was momentarily too shocked to comprehend. Leo's nose nuzzled into her hair a little before she settled down again, her breaths evening out once more.
Sunny was unsure what to do at first, but eventually her arms wrapped around Leo's middle and her head rested against their chest, the sound of their heartbeat calming them to sleep.
They both may be alone right now, both without their Pa's, but they have each other, and for now, that's enough.
