Work Text:
Twilight wraps her wing around Pinkie Pie, once again taking notice of her luscious hair. The pink curls looking more gray than they once were compared to the first time she met her. All those moons ago when Pinkie Pie was the first to say hello to her when Twilight moved to Ponyville.
The rest have passed, Rarity passed away over a month ago and Twilight has put her Princess duties on hold just to spend as much time with Pinkie Pie as possible. Seeing her best friends grow throughout the years and watching them live their lives. Now Twilight is seeing how their friendship is now coming to an end.
“Twilight?”
Twilight jolts to turn her face to Pinkie Pie. Her smile is still the same, same old Pinkie. Her wrinkles quiver as she tries to then say something. Twilight waits knowing due to Pinkie’s old age she has trouble remembering.
“My Pinkie sense is telling me. Telling me how you think our friendship is going to end.”
Twilight shakes her head.
“No Pinkie I-“ Pinkie Pie cuts her off.
“Twilight, our friendship is something that will last forever. We may not be here with you but our memories and lessons we’ve been through are.”
Twilight could feel the start of warm tears falling from her face. She tightens her wing around Pinkie and pulls her to a soft embrace.
Pinkie gives a chuckle slowly warping her hooves around Twilight and caressing her back.
“I wish all of you were here Pinkie. I know Celestial gave me this power for Equestria but if I'd known I were to see all of you gals to grow without me then I would have never chosen this.”
“But you were growing with us, Twilight.” Pinkie pulls herself away from Twilight’s hug to then gently put their heads together.
“And you will continue to grow without us. Our time is over now but you still need to keep going. Celestial wanted you to rule Equestria. You need to learn all the friendship Twilight.” Pinkie Pie then pulls away to give Twilight the stink eye.
“You hear me Princess of Friendship, you better learn all the friendship lessons!”
Twilight smiles then laughs. She will learn just for them. Every single one.

“Every Friendship lesson huh.” There was silence. The wind blowing the colorful 6 balloons resembling a group so familiar.
“You were the first friend I’ve met in Ponyville.”
After many years of ruling and all the challenges she’s faced this battle was her hardest.
Her hardest lesson she must face.
The final stage of friendship. Loss.
