A Kiss Out of Spite

Summary:

Tobio wants just one thing on the court that belongs to him. Just one.

When he discovers what that "one thing" is, though, no one is more surprised than him.

Notes:

Hello everyone! I hope that you are all doing as well as you can 💖

This story is one that I originally posted to Twitter; it was a kiss fic request from emiiiiii. The thread was recently shared again, and when I reread it, I thought, this is actually kind of cute? Maybe I should post it to Ao3! So, what you have here is a slightly edited and expanded version of the original. I hope that you enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Tobio was mad.

Like really mad. So, so mad!

Hadn’t they all voted him vice-captain? Hadn’t the second years, the third years, Hinata…

Hadn’t they all decided that he would be vice-captain? That he would be the one helping Yamaguchi with organizing trips, with budgets, with training?

He thought they trusted him.
That Hinata trusted him.

So why, then, when he showed up to practice after running an errand for Takeda-sensei, was Hinata standing there with the clipboard, watching the first-years go through service drills, when Hinata could still barely manage a jump serve?

“Oh, Moriyama-kun,” Hinata called out, “your hand needs to hit the ball flat, or you won’t get enough force behind your serve. And Yamada-kun,” he added, “make sure that you’re standing out-of-bounds, or you’ll have a service error.”

“He wanted to help,” Yamaguchi said in a low voice when Tobio started growling. “And you weren’t here yet…”

“Because Takeda-sensei asked me to take the budget to the office for approval!” Tobio shot back.

“It’s fine, Kageyama,” Yamaguchi tried to reassure him, but Tobio brushed him off.

I’m the one with the strong serve here!” he groused. “And you’re the one with the floater serve. It should be us teaching serves. He should be working on spiking with them, or receives, or…”

“Just don’t get all worked up.” Yamaguchi patted him on the shoulder. “You know he likes to get a rise out of you.”

Oh. Tobio did know. It’s exactly why, when Tobio shot lasers at Hinata from across the gym, Hinata grinned back at him merrily, then went right back to what he was doing. Tobio had to bite back a growl to keep himself from charging across the court and…

“Come on,” Yamaguchi said, pulling at Tobio’s shirt. “Let’s start practice. Just… let it go.”

Tobio followed Yamaguchi, but he couldn’t let it go. Not when Hinata was all smug and his smile was so easy and sexy and those hazel eyes were full of a mirth that Tobio both loved and hated. They’d been doing this little push and pull for almost three years, Hinata always trying to show him up, but it had been Kageyama who’d been named vice-captain, right? Shouldn’t that mean that he’d finally won?

“First-year wing spikers,” he called, “let’s see what you’ve got. Tsukishima and Ibara, come block for us.”

He could practically hear the smoke coming out of Hinata’s ears, but too fucking bad.

Hinata wanted to tread on Tobio’s territory?
Tobio was gonna do it right back.

The whole practice, he could feel Hinata’s eyes on him. Could feel the scorching heat of his gaze, could sense the snarky sex that was his smirk.

Tobio wanted…
Something.
Exactly what, he wasn’t sure.

But that damn Hinata was gonna pay for being so…disobedient…confident…annoying…

And then, Hinata stretched, showing off a sliver of toned abs, and Tobio swallowed, a wave of nausea washing over him, but not for the reasons Hinata had once made him sick.

Now it was something…different…something that made Tobio’s entire body burn, and not in unpleasant ways.

Wait, fuck, what was he saying? Nope, nope, nope.

Yeah, he couldn’t wait for this stupid practice to be over.

“Hinata! Kageyama! Clean up today!” Yamaguchi called; he and Yachi were standing together, looking over Yachi’s practice notes. “First-years, come with me and Yachi-san for a debriefing.”

Tobio’s mouth dropped open. Oh, if he was mad before? Now? He was pissed. Yamaguchi was gonna let the first-years off from clean-up duty?
And make him and Hinata do it instead?

Tobio absolutely knew what Yamaguchi had up his sleeve, and he was here to say that it wasn’t gonna work.

Tobio shot a look at Hinata, who was glaring at him, his cheeks flushed and a bead of sweat dripping off his brow. Just as quickly as they made eye contact, they both huffed and looked away.

“Why do I have to clean up with him! ” Hinata moaned. “Shouldn’t it be the first-years’ job?”

“Yacchan and I have to go over the particulars from today’s practice with them.” Yamaguchi’s voice was carefully neutral. “Go clean up, please. The first-years will be back on duty tomorrow.”

“Come on, Hinata,” Tobio grunted—he wanted to show he could do this: he could be a good vice-captain and set a good example for the team. He could!

It was just that…

With Hinata looking all smug and shit…

“Come on,” Tobio huffed. “Let’s go do this before I change my mind.”

“What’s the matter,” Hinata teased, “don’t wanna clean up with me, huh, Yama-Yama?”

There it was again: that sneaky glow in his eye.

Tobio hated that he couldn’t decide if he wanted to smack that look off Hinata’s face or if he wanted to…

“Don’t wanna do this with anyone, boke,” Tobio opted for instead. He felt all crinkly inside, like someone had crumpled him up and left him on the floor without smoothing him out. He didn’t like it.

Hinata’s answering laugh was so bright, so sparkling, that Tobio winced.

“Come on,” Hinata said, grinning widely, “I bet I can pick up more balls than you can!”

Oh, come on.

First it was serves. Then it was the clipboard. And now…

“Why is it always a contest with you?!” Tobio shouted at last. “Why is every single thing a challenge?”

Hinata stopped in his movements. He looked up at Tobio and blinked. “Why, every day, every thing’s a challenge, Bakageyama,” he replied simply. “How can I catch up to you if I don’t push myself?”

“I’m vice-captain!” Tobio exclaimed. “And I’m the best server on the team!”

“Oh.” Hinata’s eyes had that murderous glint to them. “Is Mr. Vice-Captain jealous that I got to lead the serving part of practice today?”

“You didn’t have to,” Tobio pointed out.

“Just like you didn’t have to take over with our wing spikers,” Hinata huffed.

“At least I can spike the ball!” Tobio exclaimed. “You can still barely get the ball over the net!”

“Which makes me a good person for the job!” Hinata yelled. “Because I can see people’s mistakes more easily if I’m still making them!”

“That doesn’t make any sense!” Tobio shouted, throwing up his hands in exasperation. “Sometimes I think you pull this shit just to spite me, you know.”

“Oh?” Hinata took a step closer, and Tobio got a whiff of his natural, sweat-laden scent. It was musky and delicious and Tobio tried not to lean into it too much. “You think I just want to spite you, Kageyama?!”

“Yes!” Tobio grunted, his hands now gripping his cheeks. “You’re just so…so…and then you stretch and I can see your stupid stomach and…”

“What’s wrong with my stomach, Kageyama?” Hinata had taken a step closer, and if Tobio didn’t know any better, he’d say that Hinata was smiling a little.

“Nothing!” Tobio shot back. “And that’s the problem!”

“Why?” Hinata demanded. “Because nothing’s wrong with my stomach?”

“Nothing’s wrong with any of you!” Tobio retorted. “You just…and then you stick your nose in…and you’re smiling and…UGH!” He crossed his arms over his chest, tossed them to the sides, clenched his fists…he couldn’t stop himself. Not when Hinata was there. Not when Hinata was so close. Not when…

“So there’s nothing wrong with me?” Hinata now had the nerve to look shy. It pissed Tobio off even more.

“Of course not!” he scowled. “Even your serves are better than they used to be! I just…just…”

“Just what, Kageyama?” Hinata didn’t seem angry anymore; he seemed…curious. Interested. He was leaning forward, hazel eyes seeking out Tobio’s sapphire ones, like he was looking for an answer that Tobio couldn’t quite give.

Tobio threw his arms to his sides and clenched his fists. He was tired, so tired, of the games and the snark and the…well, all of it, really. He just wanted…

“Just…can’t I have one thing that’s mine, Hinata?!” Tobio said in defeat. “Just one thing that I feel like is mine, and mine only? That I don’t have to fight with you over? Where you can just say, ‘Okay, Kageyama. You win,’ and it’s over?”

Hinata stared at him, mouth open. “That’s what you want?” he said, eyes blinking slowly as Tobio thought he was trying to process.

“Yes!” Tobio exclaimed. “Is that too much to ask for?”

Hinata’s face shifted from clueless to furious so fast Tobio felt his mind stutter as it sought to grasp the moment. “Fine!” Hinata yelled. “Fine! You want something that’s yours and yours only? Fine! Then here!”

Hinata reached out and grabbed Tobio by the collar, yanking him forward. For one brief moment Tobio thought Hinata was going to punch him in the face when…

Oh.
Oh.

Lips on lips. Mouth on mouth. Little angry grunts coming from Hinata’s throat.

Hinata wasn’t yelling; not anymore, anyway.

No; Hinata was…

Kissing him.

His lips were hot and fierce and moved over Tobio’s relentlessly, as though trying to stake a claim. Tobio growled, but Hinata just pulled him even closer, deepening the kiss.

It was warm and wet and powerful and Tobio couldn’t think, couldn’t breathe.

Who had the best serve or the best spike was no longer on his mind; all that was there was Hinata, Hinata, Hinata.

With one last grunt, Hinata broke the kiss and pushed Tobio back. He panted for air a little and wiped his mouth as Tobio stared at him, disbelieving.

“Wha…” Tobio started to say, but Hinata broke in before he could finish.

“There,” he said. “One thing on the court that belongs to you, and you alone, Yama-Yama. No one else.”

Tobio blinked. No…no one else…

Hinata grinned. “My heart, dumbass,” he said.

Tobio’s mouth dropped open.

His…his heart…

“Come on, Bakageyama,” Hinata laughed, “don’t tell me you had no idea!” He grinned and ran a hand through his hair. “My heart has always belonged to you,” he said simply, “even when you’re being an ignorant, clueless ass, like right now.”

“Your…your heart…” Tobio repeated slowly, a warmth spreading through him, starting at his lips, where Hinata had kissed him, and then flowing through his body, down his spine and out his fingers and his toes.

His heart…his heart…

Hinata swatted at him, but Tobio was quicker; he reached out, grabbed Hinata’s arm, and pulled him close.

“Yes,” Tobio breathed, looking down at Hinata’s face, all flushed from practice and with arousal and satisfaction. “Your heart’s mine.” He leaned down and kissed Hinata again. “Mine.” He kissed him again. “Mine alone.” He kissed him again.

“Okay, okay, Kageyama!” Hinata laughed. “We get it, my heart’s yours. But what about…”

“My heart,” Tobio said then (probably too loudly but oh well), “is your heart. So it’s yours. And no one else’s.” He grinned, unable to stop the lighthearted feeling from bubbling up in him.

Hinata smiled back. “Good,” he said, tilting his chin up for one more kiss. “It better be mine only. Because I don’t like to share.”

“Boke,” Tobio muttered.

Your boke,” Hinata said.

“Yeah.” Tobio liked the sound of that. “My boke.”

As Hinata leaned in again, a warmth swelled in Tobio’s chest. It was a strange feeling, one of comfort and bliss, but also, one that was just the teeniest bit smug.

Because, for once, finally, Tobio possessed something on the court that didn’t—that could never—belong to anyone else.
