“Ugggggggh!” Steph groaned, slamming the phone receiver into the switchhook. Cell Phones may be great, but there was nothing quite like the satisfaction of slamming the receiver of a landline phone into its place before the person on the other side of the call could hang up. And Steph hoped her once potential boyfriend now had a harsh ringing in his ears after that. After all, the boy had decided to stand her up for their planned date that afternoon. And it wasn’t just any date, mind you, it was a Valentine’s date! And now all of Steph’s plans were out the window and she would be stuck in the massive manor alone.
Bruce had left to spend the day with Clark at the Kent family farm, mentioning something about their first date in far too long, while Alfred had taken Damian and Jon Kent to visit a shelter for non-traditional pets which included reptiles, horses, cows, and many more creatures. The boys were ecstatic. Steph now envied them. Dick had left early that day, though Steph hadn’t been paying attention to his plans. He rambled on, and on, and on about how much fun it was going to be, all while Steph had been carefully planning out her own date, so of course she didn’t pay enough attention to his plans. Tim had left with Kon and Bart to… do whatever it is the three of them do when they’re not doing superhero work. And Jason had been spending a lot of time traveling, so Steph had no clue when he would be back or what his current plans were.
With a huff, she fell back onto the couch, her legs hanging off the arm of the couch, and grumbled “Why do I have to be alone on what’s supposed to be the most romantic holiday of the year?!”
“Because guys suck, and you really need to work on your taste in dates.”
Steph startled, sitting up at the familiar voice to find Jason standing in the doorway.
“Jay, you goober, what’re you doing here?” She laughed, rising from her place on the couch to go over and lightly punch Jason on the arm.
“What? I’m not allowed to visit my home when I’m in town?” He teased, ruffling her hair as he moved into the living room.
“Nope!” Steph said, letting the ‘p’ sound pop as she tried to get her hair back under control. “And especially not on Valentine’s Day when everyone has gone off to have a date or whatever!”
“Well too bad.” Jay countered, dropping into a seat in the old armchair. “Because I’m already here, and you’re not getting rid of me anytime soon.”
“Well…” Steph began, rolling her eyes, “I suppose I could grace you with my presence today.”
“I’m honoured, your highness.” Jay gave a mocking bow as Steph laughed. “So, what’s the plan?”
“Hmmm well I hopefully gave that jerk tinnitus with the help of the hall phone, so I guess it’s time for some food?”
Jay thought, before digging into his backpack and pulling out a bag of pink and red popcorn. “I’ve got this, you pick a movie, we’ll call it a day?”
“Deal!” Steph cheered and rushed towards the shelves filled with movies. After selecting some comedy action films, she queued them up on the tv and settled back down onto the couch, just in time to catch the bag of popcorn Jay threw at her.
“Bet you can’t catch a piece of popcorn in your mouth!” Jay teased, a smirk on his face as he waved a piece of pink popcorn back and forth.
“Oh you are on!” Steph grinned, readying her own popcorn. As the movies played in the background, Steph and Jay tried their best to catch the popcorn as it flew through the room. Most of it ended up on the floor or the chairs and sofas, which the duo vowed to clean before Alfred could return and scold them for it, but every so often one of them would catch a piece and both would cheer. It may not have been the Valentine’s Day Steph had planned and dreamt of, but it was easily the best Valentine’s Day she’d had so far!
