Acorny Tale

Summary:

This story was inspired by recent real-life events.

Work Text:

“The night was quiet. Too quiet. The kind of quiet that spells trouble. I surveyed the street. It was completely empty and free of any movement. The forest green and brown barrier glowed faintly and ominously... and I had a bad feeling about...”

“Are you monologuing again, officer?” the magical radio in Tracy's pedal cruiser crackled to life, startling her out of her dramatic brooding session.

“Dangit Dispatch, don't startle me like that! I was focused!”

“Perhaps too focused. You might want to move out of the way.”

“Out of the way of wha...” Tracy started, but she heard a whistling noise and a circular shadow fell upon her, getting bigger and bigger. She quickly pedaled backwards and moments late, a giant acorn landed in the place she was parked on moments before.

“What the fu...” she started, but then came another whistling sound and circular shadow, so she quickly did a J-turn and pedaled like bat out of hell before another giant acorn crushed her.

She kept going fast kept taking sharp corners, but every time she slowed down to try and find where they coming from, another one started falling down on her and so she had to keep going.

“I'm getting real tired of this! Dispatch, where are they coming from?”

“The perp is a real big one officer. Located on three o'clock, about three blocks away. Looks like it can zero in on us very easily.” Dispatch replied. This time an acorn fell a few metres ahead of the car and Tracy just narrowly dodged it.

“Whatever it is, it seems it is getting wiser on us. Is there any way we can hide from it?”

“I've got just the thing for you officer. Undercover mode authorized.” With this said, the pedal car started transforming. It lost all police markings and slowly changed colors to match the barrier. Same thing happened with Tracy's costume – the police uniform turned into a plain shirt and chinos and her police cap was replaced with a baseball cap. Her clothes, eyes and hair also took on the colors of the barrier. After that was done, just one last acorn fell behind her... and then nothing. Looks like the disguise worked.

“Thanks, Dispatch. Now let's bring the fight to the baddies, shall we?”

******

A gigantic, massively bloated. Sickly gray squirrel was sitting in the middle of a small square. It sniffed the air with its huge long snout adorned with thick crooked whiskers, and growled angrily. Where did that magical girl it detected and fired upon just moments ago vanish? It couldn't smell her position anymore! So frustrating... but perhaps someone else would come withing range.

The squirrel monster was called a Mortarell. It was a static monster that acted in an artillery-like fashion – its nose worked like a radar, making it able to sense targets with great precision, and then it would spit out giant acorns from its wide mouth full of cooked teeth. The acorns flew skyward at great velocity, and then dropped to bombard the enemy positions.

Aha! Two targets have now entered firing range. The Mortarell's bloated stomach grumbled as two acorns moved up to its face pouches, before it spat them out one after another, making a similar sound to an actual mortar shell leaving the muzzle. The acorns flew towards the sky before dropping down. Drat. Miss. Well, it will just keep shelling the two targets until it scores a hit!

While it loaded two more rounds, Tracy peeked over the corner. She found the bombarding beast, hidden from detection thanks to the effect of undercover mode, and now pondered a way to defeat it.

“Jeez that is a real big ugly one, Dispatch. Any idea on how to take this mofo out?”

“Perhaps the most irrational approach would work the best now? It cannot detect you after all. Your best shot might be to simply strike fast, strike hard..”

“...No mercy. Gotcha.”

The two targets kept eluding the bombardment and the Mortarell was getting seriously frustrated. This time it would hit them with a couple of extra extra extra large acorns. It gurgled as it gathered a couple of really big ones from its stomach and readied them in the cheek pouches. Ready to fire in three... two... huh?

A squeaking sound came rapidly approaching from behind. The monster shifted, turning its head right to see what it was, and it saw Tracy and her pedal cruiser barreling at her at full speed. She crashed the car right into its corpulent bellt, making it spit out the acorns directly upwards. The undercover pedal cruiser bounced back and Tracy stopped it, observing the Mortarell's response.

It was dazed for a moment but then it regained its senses and leaned towards Tracy, growling. It already loaded an another acorn, intending to fire it at her at near point-blank range, knowing she could not dodge this. But then came the whistling noises from above and both of its own super-big acorns hit the monster on its head in rapid succession. Its beady black eyes bulged and it wobbled dizzily before falling over with a massive thud. It then started to slowly break apart into purple smoke.

Tracy wiped the sweat off her brow. “Whew. Glad that worked. Say, are there any other perps around, Dispa...”

“Hey, you there!” a familiar voice shouted out. “Have you defeated the monster that was here, or did it escape?” It was Samah, coming from behind a corner with the top hat girl that she regularly hung out with nowadays.

Tracy was taken aback by the sight of her, but remembered she was in undercover mode, and it seemed to work on people as well, as Samah did not seem to have recognized her, and neither did the top hat girl. “Uh, don't worry. It's taken care of.” she replied.

“All alone? Impressive!” Samah exclaimed, then turned to her partner. “”See, this is a magical girl who adheres to her duty. In face of adversity, she sprung into action and defetead that giant monster that was giving us so much headache.” She then paused and started turning back towards Tracy. “Say, what's your title? You seem kind... of... familiar.” She stopped, and her partner's eyes turned wide before she smirked.

Tracy looked down and realized that her car turned back into the normal marked police cruiser, her outfit was a cop uniform again and it all was no longer the same colors as the barrier, but the usual police blues. Looks like the authorization for undercover mode had expired.

“ORDER KEEPER!!!” Samah shouted, but Tracy was already in the process of doing an another J-turn and then pedaling away as fast as she could. “One day I'm going to catch you, you can count on that!”

Tracy did not respond, instead she said something into her radio. Dispatch seemed to agree, as they authorized pursuit mode and before Samah was done yelling, Order Keeper was several blocks away.
