Recently, Peach has agreed to a deal with the Koopa Kingdom to marry their king for the betterment of both the kingdoms. Chapter Text

The sun was shining, and the sky was the best shade of blue. It was a perfect day for some sword fighting! At least, that’s what Mario always said when the weather was like that. Unfortunately, Luigi didn’t agree with that same sentiment. It was never, ever, a good day for sword fighting.

Currently, on the castle training grounds, Luigi quickly dodged out of the way as a sword got dangerously close to cutting his leg. He rolled his eyes as he thought of Mario’s words in his predicament.

“Be careful Weegee!” His brother in question shouted from the sidelines. “You got this!”

“Thank you!” Luigi half-heartedly called back. He raised his shield as his opponent's sword came swinging back down to hit him. The sword made a large clanging noise as Luigi felt his body tremble from the shock of it.

His attacker quickly recovered from it, raising his sword and bringing it down to hit Luigi. Luigi jumped out of the way, causing his foe to get his weapon stuck into the ground, rendering him immobile.

Using this perfect opportunity, Luig went to strike his attacker but tripped over his own two feet, and fell to the ground, his sword and shield clattering down with him.

His face burned and he felt a knot form in his stomach. He fought the shameful tears that started to prick at the edges of his eyes. This is why Luigi hated sword fighting.

His training partner started to laugh. Mumbling something under his breath about Luigi, but Luigi couldn’t make out anything he said. Luigi sat up, straightening the helmet on his head.

To add insult to injury, his stomach growled, and his face somehow turned even redder. “Oops, haha. Must be hungry.” He awkwardly mumbled.

His opponent scoffed and rolled his eyes, grabbed the sword that was stuck in the ground. then walked off. Training was over for the day.

Mario ran up to Luigi, glaring at the person he had just fought. “Geez, are you okay? I don’t know why that guy has to be such a big jerk.”

“Yes, I’m fine, you don’t need to worry.” Luigi smiled warmly at Mario. “And don’t worry about him Mar, he’s always a little grumpy whenever we spar.”

Mario gave him an ‘I don’t believe you’ look. Luigi had seen it many times before.

“Really! It’s okay!” Luigi giggled, shaking his head.

“Fine. But next time we train with him, I will take him down.”

“Whatever you say bro.”

“Now, how about we go get something to eat?” Mario said, pulling Luigi up from off the ground. He dusted the dirt off the armor pads on his little brother's shoulders. “That should help after a long day of training, don't you think?”

Luigi’s stomach grumbled again. “That sounds amazing.”

They changed from their heavy knight armor to more casual outfits to traverse the castle in. Mario still spotted his signature red on his clothing and Luigi with his green. They had their swords strapped to their sides and still had on some lightweight armor pieces here and there for emergency protection.

The hallways were crowded as the brothers attempted to make their way to the cooking area of the castle, maids and butlers running in every direction. Mario looked at Luigi and gave him a questioning look. “Did you hear about anything happening?”

“Huh? Sorry, I can’t hear you.” Luigi said, turning his head so one of his ears was closer to Mario.

“I said, did you hear about anything happening?” Mario repeated, this time trying to be a little louder. Luigi shook his head. Mario didn’t move or make an effort to respond for a second. His eyes darted around for that second. He then shrugged and didn’t say anything more.

They continued to walk, shoulder to shoulder together, trying to traverse the packed corridors. Luigi almost tripped once more, and Mario kept accidentally bumping into people as they tried to make it to the kitchen.

Once they finally made it to the door, Mario and Luigi looked at each other and laughed. “Whew! That was almost as hard as training, huh?” Mario snickered, swinging the entryway open. He held the door open for Luigi and once he was in, Mario followed.

It was a bit full of people, but nothing more than it usually was. Upon noticing the knights, one of the chefs pointed in the direction just straight ahead. “He’s in there.” Was all they said before leaving them to get back to whatever they had been doing.

“So, do you want to grab some plates and forks and I’ll get us some food? Then we’ll meet where they just told us Toad was.” Mario said.

Luigi nodded. “Okie dokie!”

And with that, they were off to complete the jobs they had been tasked with. Luigi stumbled through the crowd, apologizing every other word.

He made it to the plates and grabbed some along with a couple of forks near them, then he was off to go find Mario again.

His brother was sitting at one of the counters with high stools. Mario waved at Luigi and patted the spot next to him.

Luigi joined him and set down the plates. “What’d you choose to eat?”

“I got some bread bowls and soup!” Mario replied.

“So, I didn’t need to get the plates or forks? We need spoons.” Luigi said, holding back a laugh.

Mario’s face fell. “Oh… My bad.”

Luigi let the laugh loose. “It’s okay, I can just go get new ones.”

“No, it’s okay I got it.” Mario said and got up to get them. He quickly returned after he left, and they started to eat. They had forgotten all about their friend but luckily, he had found them.

“Mario! Luigi! My best buds!” Toad exclaimed, running up to them.

“Hey Toad!” Mario exclaimed, waving to him enthusiastically. “How’s it going?”

“It’s been going good. I’m going to be baking a cake for my sister’s friend’s ex-husband’s wedding this weekend.” Toad replied, plopping down on the other side of Mario. “What’s up with you?”

“That sounds fun, good luck with it. And we’ve been good. But I have a question.”

“What is it?”

“Did you hear of anything happening? Why’s it so busy today?” Mario asked, then took a piece of bread off the bowl and started eating it.

Well, one of the people I work with said someone was coming to the castle for a meeting next week and we need to prepare for it to happen.” Toad explained.

“Interesting…” Mario mumbled. “Do you know who?”

“I don’t know actually… but do you want to know what I heard?” Toad whispered, cupping a hand over the side of his mouth so Mario and Luigi could hear him better. The brothers’ nodded in unison. Toad grinned, glee dancing in his eyes. “My co-worker’s wife’s friend told me that they think someone from the darklands is coming!”

Luigi tilted his head slightly. There weren't many kingdoms in the darklands. He wondered which one it would be. “Do you know which one?” He asked, twirling his mustache in thought.

Toad looked around the busy, bustling kitchen. Other toads passed him, barely paying the group a second glance. “I don’t know if many people are supposed to know so keep this information on the down low. But Toadette told me that it’s supposed to be someone from the Koopa Kingdom.”

Mario’s jaw dropped to the floor. “The Koopa Kingdom?” He accidentally shouted. A few heads turned their direction as Luigi awkwardly smiled and waved to them while Toad glared at Mario. They all quickly got back to work, not wanting to waste any more time.

“Sorry…” Mario softly stated. He hid his face a little using his hand. “But really the Koopa Kingdom? They haven’t spoken to us for years, so why would they be contacting us now?”

Toad shrugged. “Beats me. I’m just a chef, what do I know?” Luigi snorted at that, and Mario rolled his eyes but was smiling, nonetheless.

Amidst the sea of voices and sounds, a shout for Toad was heard. “Well, that is my que, see you both later!” Toad said, getting up and running off without a second glance. The brother’s watched as his chef's hat got lost in the crowd, then they looked at each other.

“We could go ask Peach?” Mario suggested as they were finishing their meal. “She probably knows something about this.”

Luigi nodded. “That sounds like a good plan to me. Let’s-a go.”

The brothers cleaned up after themselves, thanking the staff as they left. They then climbed the tower to reach Peach’s room across the castle. By the time they got there, Luigi was out of breath.

“I always forget how many stairs there are.” Mario huffed, smiling.

“How could you forget?” Luigi groaned.

Mario snickered and shrugged. He fixed his clothing and knocked on the big wooden door to Peach’s room with his knuckles, making a hollow sound echo through the large staircase. A beat passed before a certain princess appeared after opening the door.

She sighed in relief once seeing the pair of them, showing a grateful smile. “Good afternoon, Mario, Luigi. I’m glad you’re here.” She opened the door further and gestured for them to go in.

They did just that and entered her big, pink room. They chose a place to sit, Mario on her bed and Luigi on a chair across the room.

Peach swiftly joined them, sitting on her plush bed very close to Mario, folding her arms in her lap. “To start things out, how was your knight training today?”

Mario made a so-so gesture. “It was okay. Weegee tripped over his feet again and almost got hurt.” He frowned.

Luigi’s face burned at the memory, he looked to the floor trying to ignore the shameful feelings bubbling up in his chest. “Mhm. I-it was alright.”

“Well, even if you did stumble, I’m still positive that you two are the best knights this Kingdom has to offer.” Peach reassured. “Mistakes happen but I wouldn’t want anyone else in charge of our safety.”

Mario gently grabbed and held her hand and they shared an affectionate look with each other. “Thank you.” Luigi could hear his brother quietly say from across the room.

“Anywho, that’s enough about us. How is your day going princess?” Luigi questioned.

“It’s been… decent.” She said, tapping her chin with her free hand in thought. She lowered her voice. “Now don’t go telling everyone this, but Toadsworth informed me that someone was coming from the Koopa Kingdom.”

“Oh, uh- Is that a good or bad thing for you? All I know is that we haven’t talked with any of them in a while.”

“I'm unsure of which it is at the moment.” Peach sighed, closing her eyes. “I’ve met their King before. Even if our kingdoms don’t associate with each other, he still goes to every meeting when all of the kingdoms meet up.”

“He is big and tries to be as intimidating as possible.” Peach softly scoffed at the thought of him. “He is a brute who threatens to get his way and gets too angry to have an actual conversation with. I don’t want to know what he wants from us.”

“Oh… so why are you having this meeting then?” Luigi asked, tilting his head.

“Toadsworth figured it might be worth it to see what they needed.” Peach said. “And who knows? Maybe their kingdom needs some help, and even if I’m not on the best terms with him, I wouldn’t want his people to suffer.”

“But even with all of that said, what could they want from us?” Peach said, leaning onto Mario’s shoulder. “We’ve always been peaceful to surrounding kingdoms. And what do we possibly have to offer for help? We aren’t exactly the most powerful of kingdoms.”

“...Maybe he heard about how strong Mario is and now he wants to marry him?” Luigi said, a big smile appearing on his face from the idea.

Mario quickly turned his head to Luigi and playfully glared at him. “Ew! I wouldn’t want to marry a person who threatens people! Maybe he wants to marry you.”

Luigi made a face. “Um… I don’t know if I’d like that either. He does sound kind of scary.”

Peach giggled. “Well, whatever happens, I’m more than positive that it will be fine. And if it's not, we have you two. So, there is no need to fret.”

“That’s true!” Mario happily grinned. “With whatever happens, me and weegee will be able to help!”

. . .

The next day, after training, Toadsworth had called Luigi and Mario to the great hall for instructions about the mystery guest.

“I would appreciate it if the two of you guarded outside the door when we have this meeting.” Toadsworth said. His creaky old voice filled up the corners of the hall. “Much too many people will try to listen in and spread idle gossip over what they heard.”

Mario gave him a thumbs up. “You got it, we can do that.”

“Mhm! Just leave it to us!” Luigi added. There wasn’t much left to say after that, besides a simple thank you from Toadsworth and they left to continue their day in the castle.

However, the next day, instead of training, the brothers and the rest of the knights helped clean up the castle with some of the staff. Peach joined them that day but had to leave after not long, for another task she had planned that day, much to Mario’s dismay.

Luigi cleaned each of his tasks thoroughly, sometimes having to clean up a spot Mario missed in his own area because of his haste. It was much better than sword training.

Luigi felt some sort of twist of fear and excitement settle in his chest as the days had passed and while he cleaned. Whoever it was coming better be dazzled by all the work everyone had put into making a good impression.

They still had fun, well as much fun as possible while cleaning up a giant castle. By the end of the week, the place was shining as if it was newly built.

Now it was the day of the meeting, Mario and Luigi stood outside the castle gates with Peach and Toadsworth. They sat glancing at each other in anticipation. Peach quietly grabbed Mario’s hand and gripped it tightly. The group waited in bated breaths.

Luigi had shined his armor for the occasion, suggesting that Mario should as well. While Mario had listened to him, he must’ve gotten too busy or forgotten because his didn’t shine as bright as his brothers. Luigi hoped he looked nice for whoever was coming.

A small, light blue dot appeared high in the cloudy sky. It kept getting closer and closer and Luigi’s stomach tied a tighter and tighter knot as he watched it.

Mario looked at his younger brother then waved his free hand in front of him. Luigi stopped staring at the dot but instead started to stare at his brother.

Mario deeply breathed in and out, as Luigi started to copy him. Quickly glancing back to the horizon, Luigi observed that the blue dot was close enough to make the shape of a small reptilian looking individual.

Giving Luigi one last soothing smile, Mario turned back to face the incoming guest, a serious expression forming on his face. Luigi tried to copy him but his mouth was a wobbly frown and it was as if his eyebrows refused to stop furrowing. His heart raced as the person finally got close enough for Luigi to make out all his features.

The koopa lowered to the ground and got off his broom. He looked at the group through foggy spectacles. He was a wrinkly old koopa who was wearing blue robes and an orange bowtie. He hardly even gave Mario and Luigi a passing glance before talking to Toadsworth and Princess Peach.

“Good morning.” He said with a blank expression. With a flip of a wand, he made the broom in his hand disappear. “I am Kamek, Second in command in Koopa Kingdom. I am here to have a meeting with Princess Toadstool on behalf of King Bowser.”

“Ah yes, we have been anticipating and preparing for your arrival. It is nice to meet you. I am Toadsworth, steward to the Mushroom Kingdom” Toadsworth croaked.

Peach held out her hand to the wizard, letting go of Marios. “I am Princess Peach, Ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom. It is my pleasure to make your acquaintance.”

Kamek shook her hand, a polite grin on his face. “As it is mine as well. You have a beautiful kingdom. Lots of greenery.”

“Why thank you.” Peach genuinely smiled. “Now if you wouldn’t mind, please follow us. We’ll be going to the great hall and have the discussion over tea.” She explained.

“Lead the way.” Kamek replied.

Peach did lead the way with Toadsworth right behind her. Kamek shuffled behind them with Mario and Luigi manning the back of the group. Small groups of Toads were doing things in the hallways, only staring at them until after they had passed them.

They arrived at the great hall, Luigi and Mario taking their positions right outside the door where Toadsworth had told them to. Peach gave them one last smile and her, Kamek, and Toadsworth all walked in, leaving the brothers alone.

Mario had been standing a little closer to the door, and as soon as they went in, he pressed his ear against it.

“Mario! We’re literally here so people don’t listen in.” Luigi scolded him with a whisper. “Get away from there.”

Mario smiled. “It’s fine, I won’t tell anyone anything.”

“Stop being nosy and come on bro!”

“Hmm, I don’t know. I’m older so I don’t have to listen to you.”

Luigi rolled his eyes. “Well, um… I’m taller than you. So, you should.”

Mario closed his eyes, raising his eyebrows and nodded. “Touche, you win this round Lu.” He returned back to his spot away from the door. Not long after waiting in silence, Mario started to make quiet popping noises with his mouth and started to bop his head along to a non-existent beat.

Luigi started to hum under his breath, matching the beat of Mario’s head bops. He tried making sure they weren’t making too much noise. A few toads passed them as the time went on, giving them odd looks which turned into smiles once they noticed who it was.

After what felt like forever, the meeting was finally over. Peach made an appearance first, opening the doors and slowly walking out. Her usual smile quivered and she waved to Mario and Luigi. Her eyes were more shiny than normal, and she quickly walked away as elegantly as she could.

Mario exchanged a glance with Luigi. “That means the meeting is over, right? I’m going to go check on her.” Luigi nodded and with that, the knight ran after his princess to see what was wrong.

Luigi stayed in the empty hall, unsure of if he should follow Mario or stay back and wait for further instruction. He weighed the options in his head and just when he was about to chase after his brother, Kamek popped out of the room looking around for something.

Luigi shouted and stumbled out away from the door that had unexpectedly flew open. Kamnek didn’t look amused in the slightest and said in an emotionless tone, “Toadsworth has requested to see you, for whatever reason.”

“Oh- Um… Okie dokie!” Luigi said, taking a breath to calm his racing nerves and he entered the room, close behind Kamek, who went to sit back down. He sat at a table, next to Toadsworth, an array of papers surrounding them, and the wizard started to organize them.

“Thank you for meeting with me. I have a job for you in the upcoming weeks.” Toadsworth said, adjusting his glasses.

“Oh- That’s no problem, what can I help you with?”

“King Bowser will be staying here for a few weeks. Sir Luigi, your task will be to be King Bowser’s personal knight while he is having his stay here.” Toadsworth instructed. “Make sure he feels welcome and show him around our wonderful kingdom.”

“Yes s-sir.” Luigi replied. The nerves that he just managed to relax started to pick right back up. “Can I ask when he is going to be arriving so I may p-prepare?”

Toadsworth looked at Kamek and cleared his throat as the old man didn’t pay any notice to the conversation that was currently happening. Toadsworth cleared his throat again, this time louder and that's when Kamek finally decided to look up.

“His royal grumpiness will arrive in a week.” He said, returning to his organizing.

“There you have it.” Toadsworth said through a strained voice.

“Okay, you can c-count on me.” Luigi smiled.

“Thank you. You and your brother are a great help to the kingdom. You’re dismissed but Peach informed us that she was going to be in her room. It may be in your best interest to go there and talk with her.” Toadsworth said, eyebrows furrowed.

Kamek had a happy grin on his face as he cleaned up what Luigi assumed to be royal paperwork or something of that sort. The koopa stopped what he was doing and looked up, raising an eyebrow at Luigi. “Can I help you?”

Luigi’s eyes widened and darted to the floor; his shoes seemed much more interesting at the moment. “S-sorry. Um… I have t-to go talk with the- the princess now.” He briskly made his exit, not looking up a single moment more.

Once he was out of the room he started to make his way to Peach’s. He speedwalked there, not wanting anyone to think anything was wrong if he was running. His heart pounded in anticipation and anxiety with each step closer to his destination.

The scene Luigi was faced with when he walked into the princess’ room was not one, he was expecting. Mario was holding Peach, whispering things to her that Luigi couldn’t make out. Tear tracks lined her face, and her mascara was running.

“Oh… oh no.” Luigi softly mumbled, his mouth twisting into a frown. “What happened?”

Peach looked startled at the sudden appearance by Luigi but quickly fixed herself. “Don’t worry about that just yet. Can you please tell me what Toadsworth told you first?” She requested.

“Oh um… if you’re really sure I should.” Luigi said. With a nod of the head from Peach, he started, “He told me that I was going to be King Bowser’s personal knight and I’m supposed to show him around the kingdom.”

Peach continued to nod while listening, processing the information. “That sounds correct.” She mumbled to herself.

“So, uh… what did they want? And why is he coming over?” Luigi asked, fidgeting with the hem of his shirt.

Peach laughed humorlessly. “Your prediction was close.” She sniffled and tried to fix her posture to be more elegant, but that ended up being a little too much and she leaned back onto Mario.

Luigi sat there, trying to think of what she meant. “He really wants to marry Mario or me?”

The corners of Peach’s mouth slightly turned up and she gently giggled. “No, I don’t think he’s even aware of either of your existences.” The upturned parts of her lips pointed back down to a frown. “Although, He is aware of me. More than I ever anticipated.”

Luigi felt a lump form in his throat. “Wait, you don’t mean…”

Peach nodded. “Yes, he asked me to marry him. I-” She took a shuddering breath, tears forming in her eyes once more. “I said yes.”

“Huh?!” Luigi exclaimed, then clapped his hands over his mouth. Peach’s eyes widened at the display. “But- but… wh- why would you…? Don’t-” Luigi started to pace, twirling his mustache as he talked. “Don’t you love Mario?”

Peach looked at Mario, she grinned at the sight of the comforting gaze he gave her. “More than anyone.” She looked away from him but didn’t make any attempts to move away from the knight.

“But my people are important to me. If I gave up a way for them to be happier just for my own sake, that’d just be selfish.” Peach remarked. “I talked with Mario about it. He understands.”

Mario looked at Luigi and had a smile that was barely managing to stay up. Tears pricked at his eyes, but he quickly blinked them away. “Yeah. She’s right. It’s the most logical thing to do. It’s okay.” His voice was strained as he kept trying to keep his eyes dry.

“But you and my bro have had plans to marry since you were kids! You’ve liked him forever! You’re the perfect couple! He’s much better than that Bowser guy!” Luigi said, his heart breaking at the sight of Mario so distressed. “What could he possibly have to offer you?!

Peach sighed. “Before I explain anything, I need you to understand that I trust that you and Mario are more suited to protect others more than anyone in this world.” She stated. “But we can’t always depend on you, and I wouldn’t want to place that burden on your shoulders alone.”

Luigi gave a quick nod and his pacing stopped as he tried to focus on her words.

“I said yes because he has a powerful army that can protect our people.” Peach said, a far off look in her face as she continued to be held by Mario. He hadn’t let her go even for a second. “And I want them to be safe. Marrying him would benefit both of our kingdoms.”

“Kamek didn’t force you into it, right?” Luigi asked, finally sitting down in his usual spot. He started to fiddle with his hands again.

“Goodness no! Toadsworth or I would never allow that to happen.” Peach said. “Kamek very calmly stated that he had a proposition that would greatly benefit both of our citizens. Then he explained to us the whole ‘Marriage Idea’ that Bowser had. And I agreed with it. It would help both of our people thrive.”

“Wait- how would it help his kingdom?”

“His kingdom isn’t the richest. They could use the money to help bring some of the citizens out of poverty. Kamek did testify that he has been a witness to Bowser trying his best to get them out of that situation, but he doesn’t have enough funds to do so.”

“Ah… I see.” Luigi said, and the room fell into a heavy silence and nothing else could be said. Everything that was needed to, was already spoken.

They all sat together staring off into space, lost in their thoughts. Rain pounded at the windows. Mario and Peach tightly held each other’s hands and each other. Luigi sat, stewing in a silent frustration. How could he help get Peach to get out of this while still helping both the kingdoms?

Notes:

Let’s all pretend I didn’t say it'll be quite a while till the next Bowuigi fic. I was going to wait till I was finished writing this whole fic then post it but maybe I got a little too excited about this idea and wanted to share it immediately haha.

Chapter Text

It was late at night; the moon was high in the sky and Luigi’s spirits felt as low as ever. Mario and Luigi had gone to Mario’s room in the castle after talking with Peach about her engagement to the king of the darklands.

Mario’s living space was messy, as usual. Things were thrown about and Luigi had to move a random clothing piece off his older brother's bed to sit on it. Mario, sat next to him, feet hanging off the side of it and back against the wall.

“So, um…” Luigi felt like the words were stuck in his throat. “How are you feeling bro?”

Mario sighed. He looked at Luigi and his face showed a half-hearted smile. “I’m okay. You don’t need to worry about it. I’m going to be fine.”

“Mario… your girlfriend, who by the way, you’ve said you’d marry ever since you were kids, just got engaged to some random person. How is that okay?” Luigi responded.

Mario shrugged, leaning his head against the wall. He turned away from Luigi, hiding his face from view. “It’s not but it will be. This is just how royalty is. And it’s better for everyone. We don’t need to be depended on as much and the kingdom will be safer. We shouldn’t stop the wedding just for our feelings.”

“Bro, your feelings are important too. Even if they’re small in the grand scheme of things.”

“I know. But this time they need to be ignored for more important things.”

Luigi huffed, which caused Mario to turn back to Luigi. His eyes were watery, but no tears fell. He gently reached out and held both of Luigi’s hands. “Listen weegee. I’m okay, I promise. I still get to see her every day, she’s not dying. And we’ll still be close. It will be alright.”

Luigi slowly nodded. “Well… just… if you ever need to talk, you know I’m here, right? You don’t always have to act like everything's fine.”

Mario genuinely smiled for once that night. “Mhm, I know. Thank you, Lu. But seriously I’m fine. Although, you should go get some sleep. It’s been a long day, and I don’t want you falling asleep on the job tomorrow.”

“Hey!” Luigi said while Mario snickered. “That was one time!”

Luigi got up from the bed and moved towards Mario’s door. He was about to say goodnight, but Mario started to speak before Luigi could even open his mouth.

“Hey Luigi?” Mario said, looking at his younger brother.

Luigi turned around and faced him. “Hmm?”

“Be careful while being Bowser’s knight. If everything Peach said is true, I don’t want you to get hurt.”

“Don’t worry. I will be.” Luigi gave him a reassuring smile. “But you should also give him a chance. Maybe he’s just angry because royal meetings are stressful.”

“That’s good to hear and don’t worry I will.” Mario said, yawning and getting up himself. “Just because he’s marrying Peach and a little angry doesn’t mean I think he’s a horrible guy, although we should still listen to her because Peach knows more about him than us.”

“Okie dokie!” Luigi said, pulling Mario into a hug. “Goodnight Mar, sleep well.”

Mario lingered in Luigi’s arms for a beat longer than normal. “You too. Goodnight weegee.” They let go of each other and Mario waved as Luigi left the room, going to his own room that was right beside Mario’s on the left. Once inside, He swiftly got ready for bed and fell into a fitful sleep.

When Luigi saw Mario the next morning, the first thing he noticed were the eyebags under Mario’s eyes and how swollen they actually were. Luigi didn’t know if he should say something, but not wanting to push his brother, he didn’t mention it and just asked him what they should get for breakfast.

. . .

There were two days before Bowser came and the whole castle was buzzing with activity yet again. Luigi moved through a large crowd in the kitchen, trying to find a certain mushroom man. He finally found him in front of the stove, cooking something.

“Good morning, Toad.” Luigi said once he was close enough for Toad to hear. He moved out of the way of an oncoming kitchen worker.

“Hey Luigi.” Toad said, not even giving him a spare glance as he moved around the kitchen, making something. “What’s up?”

“Oh, so, I’m supposed to show King Bowser around the Mushroom Kingdom while he’s here, and I was wondering if you knew any good spots to show him?” Luigi asked, pulling out a pad of paper he brought along with him.

“I know a lot of them! How many do you need?”

“Just a few please!”

Toad started to explain different places that he’s been before as Luigi wrote them down as fast as he could, missing a few words here and there, making his notes look messer than he would’ve liked.

Toad was moving around everywhere as he talked, making Luigi bump into people as he passed. He went on for the better part of an hour, going off on side tangents and telling him new drama that was happening in the kitchen.

Luigi had to redirect him back to the topic at hand, which Toad rolled his eyes at but still went on. Soon enough, Luigi had a good start for places to go.

“Thanks Toad! This’ll really help me when he comes.” Luigi thanked.

Toad nodded. “Yeah sure, anytime. Now get out of my kitchen, I’m busy.”

“Sorry, goodbye. Good luck with your cooking.”
. . .

Luigi was in Peach’s room one day before the koopa king came, asking for tips on how to show Bowser around and any general things to know about him, since she knew him best.

“Just keep in mind with everything you do, that he does have a tendency to get angry. So, it’s best if you want to keep the peace, try not to agitate him. He can breathe fire and it tends to make an appearance whenever he has strong emotions.” Peach warned.

Luigi nodded his head, writing some of what she said in his mini notebook.

“Other than that, I think you’ll be fine. He will threaten to try getting his way, but from what I can tell, and what I’ve seen, they seem to be empty.” She continued, tapping her chin in thought. “Although that might be because we’re always in a formal setting. It’s just in your best interests not to anger him.”

Luigi moved his pen along the paper as fast as he could. “Thank you, princess. This’ll be helpful as I fulfill my role for your union with him.”

Peach showed him an unintentionally sad smile. “Of course, let me know if you need any help with dealing with him.”

“Thank you.” Luigi almost got up but decided not to instead. “And um… how are you doing? I mean you are marrying someone you don’t want to, and you’re just doing it for political reasons and that has to-” Luigi stopped himself. “Whoops. Sorry, I didn't mean to ramble, but really, how are you doing?”

“It’s been somewhat difficult. My emotions are all over the place and I’m even more stressed due to all the wedding planning.” Peach admitted. “I can imagine how Mario is doing too, which doesn’t help with the stress. He hasn’t said anything, and I am aware he’s just acting strong no matter how much he promises he’s doing well.”

“He’s been doing the same thing to me.” Luigi said. “But you should try not to worry about him. I’ll make sure he’s doing okay.”

“Thank you for looking out for him.”

“Of course! He’s my big bro! Just because I’m the younger one doesn’t mean I won’t be making sure he’s alright too.”

“You’re a good brother, Luigi. Now, my apologies. It wasn’t my intent to unload all of that onto you. Thank you for listening. Even if I’m stressed, know my door is open for anything you’d like to say as well.” Peach said.

“That’s very sweet of you princess.” Luigi smiled. Peach returned it with one of her own, fondness placed in her eyes. “Uh, sorry… if that is everything, I’m going to have to go. I’m asking Toadette spots around the kingdom she knows that would be great to show Bowser.”

“No worries, that is all I had to share. I hope everything goes well in your search. But, in my opinion, the gardens are always a good area to go, if you’d like of course, and they’re always open to you.” Peach suggested.

“Oh, that’s perfect!” Luigi said, hastily jotting it down in the notepad. “You're a genuis, Peach!”

. . .

It was late in the afternoon on the day Bowser was going to be staying for a couple of weeks. Luigi had gotten input from more people around the castle and had quite the list of places to show a newcomer to the kingdom. He hoped Bowser would like it.

Peach, Mario and Luigi all stood outside the castle and Luigi was hit with a feeling of deja vu. He was in his full armor along with Mario. None of them said anything and silence hung in the air, tense and thick. They all watched a large black and red carriage appear on the road leading to the castle.

Luigi felt his heart pound and his breath quickened. He tried slowing it down as Bowser's carriage was getting closer. By the time the wagon got there, Luigi had successfully learned how to breathe properly again.

The carriage stopped and a koopa who looked very different from Kamek hopped out of it. It had to be Bowser. He was holding a bouquet of roses and had a confident smirk on his face.

Luigi noticed Peach stiffening and he glanced at Mario. His brother didn’t look the happiest but tried to keep his face neutral.

Bowser held out the bunch of flowers and grinned at Peach. “For my queen. I cannot wait to rule the world together.”

Peach reluctantly took it from his claws. “The world? As far as I’m aware we’re only combining our two kingdoms.”

“Well,” Bowser chuckled. “We’ll get there one day, for now it'll just be our kingdoms.”

Peach’s mouth fell into a tight line. “Lovely.” She said, a bit strained. “Welcome to The Mushroom Kingdom. I hope you’ll enjoy your stay. Onto other matters, this is Sir Luigi. Luigi, this is King Bowser.”

Bowser turned to Luigi after Peach introduced him. He was very tall, much larger than Kamek. It made Luigi’s knees feel weak. But, even if he was a very big koopa, he was a good looking one at that. His red hair and eyes looked absolutely radiant in the sun.

Luigi felt his jaw go slack as he couldn’t help but stare at the King. Peach had failed to mention how cute Bowser was in her description of him.

Bowser raised an eyebrow at his first glance at Luigi, but his face softened after looking at him for a second. He fixed his stare into a slight glare and said, “Who are you?”

Luigi closed his open mouth. “I’m Luigi, I’ll be your own personal knight and tour guide while you're here.” He gently smiled at him. “Just let me know if you need anything.”

“Hmm, I might just take ya up on that. But what’s this? I get the special treatment and get to have my own personal knight? Seems right. I am the best and most deservin’ of it after all.” Bowser replied, smirking.

Peach rolled her eyes in the background and Luigi started to giggle, and he couldn’t keep it in. Bowser was surprisingly funny.

“Anyways, the two of us will be having a meeting tomorrow about our wedding. But for today you’ll just be resting from your trip and getting situated here. Luigi will show you to your temporary residence and help with your luggage.” Peach explained, clasping her hands in front of her.

“Will I be seeing you later?” Bowser questioned, wringing his hands.

“I don’t think so. I apologize for my absence; I am quite busy today. But it is my hope Luigi is able to show you the best our kingdom has to offer. Now if you’ll excuse me, I must go.” Peach waved to the group and Mario gave one last look to Bowser and quickly followed after her.

“Who’s the short stack followin’ her?” Bowser grunted, taking his things from the koopa troopa who had been driving the carriage.

“Oh! That’s just my older brother, Mario. He’s really nice and super cool.” Luigi smiled.

Bowser just continued to glare. “Well, why’s he following her?”

“Umm... he’s just her own personal knight. It’s been that way since we were kids.”

Bowser shrugged. “Hmph. Whatever, show me to my room now.”

“R-right away.” Luig said. “Uh, would you like me to help you with your bags?”

Bowser didn’t say a word and just dumped them in Luigi's arms. “Let’s go.” He said after he gave the bags away.

Bowser stomped behind him as Luigi led him around the castle. “So, um- you’ll be staying in the hallway just across from mine, so if you ever need anything just go to the room with the green lightning bolt hanging on it.”

The koopa still wasn’t in a talking mood so he just grunted as a response. Luigi didn’t mind, the silence was kind of nice. They arrived at Bowser’s room in no time, which was a good thing since Luigi felt like he was going to drop the bag Bowser had brought if he had to keep holding it for much longer.

“This is your room! Feel free to make yourself at home and maybe one time we could go to the market and get you some things to decorate.” Luigi said, placing the case on the floor as softly as he could without making it obvious, he was about to drop it.

The pair entered the room, Bowser taking his case with Luigi following close behind him. “Uh, how are you liking it so far?” Luigi asked as Bowser started to aggressively put his things up.

“It’s fine, I guess. Just wish I coulda seen more of Peaches today.” Bowser rolled his eyes and ranted. “Can you believe her? Aren’t we supposed to be gettin’ married? Why is she acting so rude?”

Luigi stayed next to the door, unsure of how to actually answer. “Well, um-”

He got cut off by the koopa continuing his rant. “I gave her a whole entire fuckin’ bouquet and everything! The audacity.”

“Maybe she just needs uh… some time?” Luigi suggested quietly.

Bowser turned his head, annoyed. “What’d ya say?”

“W-well maybe she- she just needs s-some time?”

Bowser just looked at Luigi for a moment. “Whatever.” He mumbled, shaking his head and had light smoke rising from his nostrils.

Luigi awkwardly kicked at the ground. Peach was right, he had been distracted by Bowser’s charm and forgot all about the Princess’ warnings about the koopa’s anger.

“Why are you still here? Get outta my room.” Bowser stated.

“B-but, your highness, I’m supposed to s-show you around.” Luigi rebutted. “After you- you put away your t-things of c-course.”

“Ya can do that some other time, buzz off. I can take care of myself” Bowser growled. “And don’t call me that, it’s too formal.”

“What would you like me to c-call you?”

“Just Bowser is fine. You can go now.”

“Okie dokie, Bowser! I’ll uh… g-get out of your hair and be outside the door if you need anything. Just notify me and I c-can help.” Luigi bowed to him and left the room, a bit hurriedly.

Luigi closed the door behind him and leaned against it. He sighed, taking off his helmet and running his hand through his hair. He was really starting to see why Peach didn’t like this guy. Even if he was kinda pretty.

Luigi stopped leaning on the door and switched to resting on the wall. He leaned his head against it and felt his eyelids droop. It’d be fine to just close his eyes for a moment, Bowser would get him if he needed something. He shut his eyes and drifted off.

“Weegee!” A voice called to him, rousing Luigi from sleep.

Luigi blinked sleep from his eyes and yawned. “Huh?” Now that his eyes were fully open and focused, Mario was standing in front of him, his eyebrows furrowed.

“Hey weegee, are you alright?” Mario asked.

“Oh, uh… yes. I must’ve drifted off for a few minutes.” Luigi responded.

Mario gave him a confused look. “I’ve passed by this hall twice in the past hour and you haven’t moved a muscle.”

Luigi’s eyes widened. “Huh? I was asleep for that long?! Oh no, what if Bowser needed me and I was too busy being asleep and now I’ve ruined everything for Peach?!” Luigi started to pace.

“Hey, it’s okay. I’m sure it’ll be fine.” Mario said, grabbing Luigi’s shoulders to get him to calm down. “If he gets mad that you accidentally fell asleep, then he’s a big grump and you shouldn’t worry about people like that.”

“Oh… you’re right.”

“But what are you doing in the hallway in the first place? Aren’t you supposed to be with him and showing him around?”

Luigi awkwardly laughed. “Um… about that. He sort of kicked me out of the room before I could do anything?”

Mario’s eyebrows sharpened into a glare. “Are you kidding me? Maybe someone should teach him to be more nice.” He started to walk towards the door, but Luigi stopped him.

“Bro! Stop, It’s okay! I’ll be fine even if he’s a little rude. He must just be stressed out from the long journey. And if he’s always this way, I just have to deal with it until they get married.” Luigi sighed.

“They haven’t even set a date for the wedding yet, what if it takes a year and you have to deal with a jerk like that for all that time?” Mario asked.

“It’ll be fine, I can handle it till then. I’m sure Peach wouldn’t want to wait that long anyway.”

“Well… fine, I guess. Just tell me if he gets to be too much and I’ll come help and take your place, no questions asked.” Mario said, taking Luigi’s hand and staring at him seriously.

Luigi laughed. “Thank you, but don’t worry so much. You’ll turn into me.”

That got Mario to smile. “I don’t know, that sounds like a win-win to me, you’re pretty cool.”

“You’re a dork.” Luigi said, stifling a laugh.

“Rude.” Mario replied, eyes joyful, nonetheless. He glanced out the window and those once joyful eyes turned to panic. “I’ve got to go! It’s getting dark and I told Toad I’d meet him soon. Be safe, get me if you need me, love you, bye bro!”

Mario began to run down the hallway and Luigi waved to him as he left. “Have fun, Mar!” Luigi called before Mario got too far down the hallway. Mario gave him a very quick thumbs up before he finally disappeared from sight.

Luigi was left alone again. Darkness soon fell into the hallway and a couple of toads came to light the candles at the beginning of the hall. They waved to Luigi as they passed but left soon after. Really the only light Luigi had was from the moonlight pouring through the windows throughout the corridor.

“Psst… knight guy.” A low voice echoed through the dark hallway, interrupting the silence.

Luigi nearly jumped out of his skin and his heart started to rapidly race. “W-who s-said th-that?” He grabbed his sword out of the sheath, holding it defensively.

He heard laughing behind him, and he whipped around, shaking. It was Bowser in the doorway, acting as if Luigi’s reaction was the funniest thing on earth. “Didn’t mean to scare ya.” Was all he said.

“O-oh.” Luigi started to put his sword away. It took a few tries as he kept missing the scabbard, but he managed to get it in after the fifth try. Bowser had finished his laughing and was waiting in silence, an eyebrow raised at Luigi’s troubles.

“Um… d-did you need s-something?” Luigi asked, clearing his throat and fixing his posture from being hunched over.

“I have an idea. Come here, it's a secret.” Bowser enthusiastically motioned him towards the door, holding it open.

Luigi furrowed his brows and cautiously moved forward.  “Uh... okie dokie.”

After they were in the privacy of Bowser’s room, Bowser started to talk quickly and excitedly. “Ya wanna try to sneak out?” He asked.

Luigi tilted his head. “Why would we do that? We can just leave. All we would need to do is talk to someone, so they know you didn’t just disappear or that something happened to you.”

Bowser huffed. “Well yeah, but I don’t want a big ol’ deal being made just because I wanted to leave the castle.”

“It doesn’t really take that long.” Luigi forced a smile.

“Bah, it’ll be much easier if we just sneak out.” Bowser toothily grinned and his eyes shined. “It’ll be fun!”

“I don’t know about that…” Luigi said, worried expression placed on his face.

Bowser’s smile started to fade, and he rolled his eyes. “C’mon green stache’! I’m getting kinda hungry too. We could go have a late-night picnic. What do ya say? That’s technically showing me around the kingdom.”

Luigi huffed. He was supposed to be welcoming, right? Even if it was a little against the rules, the guest is always right. “Well… okay.”

Bowser’s face lit up. “Yes! This is gonna be great I promise!” He shook Luigi’s shoulders, ecstatic. “Here’s the plan: you go get the food and I’ll grab a blanket in here that I brought, and you can lead us to a good place.”

“That sounds good. What should I get for food though?”

“I don’t know, you pick it out. Show me a taste of the mushroom kingdom.” Bowser said, pushing Luigi out the door.

“Wait-” Luigi tried to argue but Bowser had already shut the door, leaving him to fulfill his task. He looked down at his clothing. Sneaking around the kitchen would be impossible with all this armor, especially with how clumsy he was.

Walking out of the hallway, Luigi’s first stop was his room so he could change. He wore his casual clothes with the pieces of armor and a belt and holder for his sword just in case. Getting Bowser hurt on the first day wouldn’t turn out well for anyone.

Then, he ran to the kitchen, which didn’t have many people in it. There were maybe one or two toads doing extra work but most everyone had left for the day. Luigi sheepishly waved at them and started to collect food all the while thinking of where to have the picnic.

He found a bag to place it in and just as quickly as he entered the kitchen, he left to join Bowser again. As Luigi made his return, the king was holding what he said he would.

“Great!” Bowser said upon noticing the bag in Luigi’s hand. “Shall we?”

Luigi nodded and poked his head out the doorway, looking to see if any guards were anywhere near. He motioned for Bowser to follow and the koopa made an attempt to silence his footsteps as much as possible.

“We’re going to try to go out that window, then we’ll go through the gardens, then to the woods just beyond the castle.” Luigi explained. “Sound good?”

Bowser nodded. Luigi snuck over to the window and opened it up. Without warning, Bowser reached ahead of him and pulled the window open more, enough for even him to be able to make it out without complications.

Luigi moved out of the way as Bowser hopped out, with everything still in his hands, and landed on his feet. He motioned for Luigi to join him. Clutching the bag to his chest with one hand, and using the other, Luigi carefully let himself out of the window, holding on to its ledge for support.

His hand slipped and he began to fall towards the ground. Bowser turned around and watched as Luigi hit the floor, the bag slipping out of the knight's hands. Bowser attempted to stifle his laugh, but a small snort came out anyways.

The koopa picked up the bag, holding it out to Luigi as he had a bright red face and picked himself up off the ground. “Thanks.” Luigi barely got the words out.

Bowser smiled, eyes filled with amusement. “Maybe don’t try falling next time? We’re tryna be quiet ya know.”

Luigi felt his face flush further. “Good- Good idea.” He mumbled “Keep f-following me, the woods are just past here.” Luigi said, clearing his throat.

They made it through the gardens and walked through the forest, Luigi trying his hardest not to jump at the sounds he kept overhearing. He hummed quietly to himself to calm his nerves. Thankfully, they managed to find the meadow hidden in the trees. Toadette had mentioned it when Luigi was interviewing everyone.

It was a meadow filled with yellow tulips, striped carnations and daffodils. Large pine trees surrounded the area, but the sky was wide open and full of tiny glittering stars above them. They found a good spot to place the blanket and start eating.

Nothing was said between the two, they just enjoyed the food and the night sky above them. Luigi felt a growing discomfort as time went on. He kept opening his mouth to say or ask something but stopped, not having anything of importance to talk about. Soon enough the meal was over, and nothing had been said.

Bowser reached out and grabbed the last piece of their food without asking if he could. Luigi felt his stomach churn bitterly, but he tried to ignore it the best he could. “Did you like the food?” He asked.

“For bein’ cooked by a buncha toads, it was decent.” Bowser said, laying down and placing his hands behind his head. “The mushroom kingdom has a pretty night sky though. It’s almost as pretty as Peach.”

Luigi snorted, lying beside him. “Um… if you don’t mind me asking, why do you like Peach so much?”

“What’s not to like? Her hair, her eyes and the way her hair blows in the breeze. She’s the perfect person to marry.”

“Well… that’s true. But do you like her besides her looks?”

Bowser started to glare, the smoke rising from his nostrils again. “That’s none of your business. Romance is something only the smartest of us understand, greenie.”

“Wait- g-greenie?” Luigi asked, titling his head.

“It’s ‘cause ya wear green. It seems fitting enough.” Bowser replied, shrugging.

“Hmm. I see”

“What? You don’t like it?” Bowser questioned, raising a brow.

“No.” Luigi giggled. “No, it’s great. Just… unexpected.”

“I bet it’s so unexpected because you weren't planning on having such a great nickname by the end of today, huh?” Bowser chuckled.

Luigi rolled his eyes and smiled. “Yes, that's exactly why, how’d you know?”

Bowser shrugged, supporting his own grin. “I just know these things. It comes with wisdom.”

Luigi loudly laughed. He clapped his hands over his mouth. “Sorry… that was really loud and we’re trying to be quiet.”

“Bah, I wouldn’t worry about it. It's kinda late so not many people should be up anymore. And we are in the middle of a forest.”

Luigi shot up from his spot on the blanket. “Wait, how late is it?”

“How am I supposed to know that? It’s just gettin’ really dark out here.”

Luigi started to clean their mess up and put it away. “We have to go.”

“Wait- why? You need to stop being such a goodie two shoes and relax a little.” Bowser huffed.

“But it’s getting late, and you have a meeting with Peach tomorrow, and I still haven’t shown you around the castle!” Luigi said, accidentally letting a cup slip out of his hands.

Bowser picked it up for him and handed it to him. “Wait- why do ya know my whole schedule?”

“I’m your personal knight! That’s what I’ve been telling you!”

“Geez ya don’t need to get so mad greenie.” Bowser growled, folding his arms.

Luigi sucked in a breath of air, realizing he was right, and it wasn’t that big of a deal. But what was a big deal is that he was talking to a king like that.“You’re right. I-I’m sorry, your highness ”

“I thought I told ya to quit it with that.” Bowser said, his tone sharp. He glared at Luigi and crossed his arms.

“S-sorry.” Luigi mumbled.

“Whatever, let's just go.” Bowser growled. He picked up some of the supplies they had brought along with them. They quickly left. Luigi too nervous to start humming again, and they went back to the castle, sneaking in the same way they came out. With Luigi there it was easy work to avoid the guards, and after putting the utensils away in the kitchen, they ended up back at Bowser’s room.

“So, um… I’ll see you tomorrow, your h- Bowser. I’ll see you tomorrow, Bowser.” Luigi corrected.

That earned a grin from the koopa king. “I’ll be looking forward to your tour, greenie. It shouldn’t be half bad if you're around. Although I will be expecting first-rate services.”

“Why of course.” Luigi replied. “We wouldn’t have it any other way for the great koopa king.”

Bowser shook his head, grinning to himself. “G’night. Green stache.”

“Goodnight Bowser.” Luigi waved to him as he shut the door. Once it was closed, he sighed softly.

He sat there for a minute, thinking of the events of the day. Remembering how late it was and how early he needed to get up the next morning, Luigi started to run to his room, tired and slowly,so he could at least get some sleep for the night.

Notes:

My bad if the actual characterization for Bowser is a little all over the place. I’m trying something a little different for him this time around so hopefully it works and isn’t too out of place.

Anyways thanks for reading this chapter and for all of the support from the last chapter! It truly means so much and I hope your day is fantastic and be nice to yourselves and drink some water and get some rest if you need it!

Chapter 3

Notes:

ATTENTION!! Chapter two has been slightly edited because I wasn’t 100% happy of how it turned out, basically if you don’t want to go read it again, here’s the gist: When Bowser and Luigi go to sneak out instead of catching him, Bowser lets Luigi fall out of the window and just kind of watches him do it. That's all, happy reading!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Luigi had woken up the next morning, bright and early, ready to show Bowser the castle. He had quickly gotten ready and knocked on the king’s door only to be greeted with a groan behind the door in response. Luigi’s smile faltered; groaning was never a good sign.

“Good morning, your highness!” The knight chirped. “Uh… We have to do the tour and…” Luigi paused, trying to think of what to say to get Bowser to come out. “We can get breakfast at the end!”

Dead silence greeted him in return. Luigi could hear the rest of the castle begin to rise and come alive. Should he wake him up? Or let Bowser sleep? He was a king so would that be out of line to force him out? Just when he was about to knock again, the door swung open. Luigi jumped, looking at Bowser who had gotten ready in a surprisingly short time.

“I thought I said call me Bowser?” He raised an eyebrow and looked annoyed.

“R-right. I forgot” Luigi internally scolded himself.

“Let’s just get this over with.” The koopa grumbled. “That breakfast better be worth it.”

. . .

The tour was going better than Luigi had originally thought. There was minimal complaint, a fact the knight had largely contributed to how early it was. While there were a few comments from Bowser here and there, mainly just to boost his own ego, he remained uncharacteristically quiet. It stayed that way until the knights training ground.

“Here is where all the knights train.” Luigi pointed to the rectangle drawn in the dirt.

“Alright.” Bowser nodded his head, an impressed look on his face. “My kingdom doesn’t have one of these.” A smirk suddenly appeared on his face. “I bet ya win all of the battles you have over there, right?”

“Oh!” Luigi couldn’t help his face from turning red, thinking of his past blunders on that mini battlefield was never a good idea for his embarrassment levels. “I- I don’t know about that.”

“Well, why dontcha show me your knight powers? Or skills? Or whatever, on the field?”

“Excuse me? Knight powers?”

“What I’m sayin’ is we should have a fight!” Bowser chuckled. “Show me what you’re made of!”

“Um… well… I- I” Luigi stammered. “W-we have to finish the- the tour, right? Maybe another day?”

“Bah, the tour can wait! Are ya scared of losing? I get it, I am pretty great.”

“Uh, with all due respect your hi-”

“Bowser.”

“Right, B-bowser, we have to finish because you avoided i-it last night, and you have a meeting to-today with Peach.” Luigi explained. “And what- what about the breakfast I talked about?”

Bowser stopped, tapping his chin with one of his claws in thought. His lips turned into a strained line. “Fine. Only because I want to though.”

Luigi felt his muscles untense. “Great! Why don’t I show you to the stables?”

. . .

“These are the kitchens, you’re welcome here whenever you’d like.” Luigi said, showing off the place. He had shown Bowser nearly everything, save for the library but they were running out of time and the meeting was going to be soon and really just needed to be done with this whole ordeal.

The toads working stared at Bowser as they passed by, whispering to each other. Bowser started to glare at them, which made them run as soon as they saw him.

“Ah- Sorry. They aren’t used to seeing a Koopa.” Luigi tried to help. “Most of them don’t get out much.” He awkwardly laughed.

Bowser looked off to the side, his grumpy expression still plainly written on his face. “Whatever, they could just be a little nicer about it, don’t ya think?”

“Mhm. I don’t think they should be whispering about you; that’s not very kind.” Luigi’s eyebrows furrowed.

Bowser turned his head and looked at Luigi, his expression unreadable. Luigi’s eye’s darted around as he took a small step back, and his face turned red. “Um… Is everything all r-right?”

The king stayed silent for what felt like hours but was no more than a couple seconds. “Yeah, everything's fine. What’s next on the list?”

“Well, that’s about it.” Luigi explained, holding the door open for Bowser. The king walked through it, having to duck his head as he left. “We can either go to the dining area or find somewhere else and we can have breakfast there. I guess brunch now.”

“What’s your favorite place?” Bowser randomly asked, ignoring the knight entirely.

“Oh! Um…” Luigi started to twirl his mustache. “I love the library. It’s a nice quiet place to spend your free time.”

“Hmm, that makes sense that you like it.” Bowser chuckled. “It fits ya.”

Luigi smiled but his brows furrowed. “Oh, thanks?” He snorted, then realized his question was never answered. “So, not to annoy you, but where did you want to have brunch?”

Bowser shrugged. “Doesn’t really matter, I just want to have the food bwahahaha.”

Luigi giggled in return. “Okie dokie! Hmm how about just having it in the dining area? That meeting is pretty soon… Do you think you can remember where it is?”

Bowser gave Luigi a toothy grin. “My memory is fantastic, just like the rest of me, I’ll have no trouble finding it.” The knight returned his smile and after showing the king a swift thumbs up, he was off running to the kitchen to get food for the two of them.

Luigi glanced at a clock in the hallway, there wasn’t much time left, they really had to hurry. He grabbed some extra food that the chef’s in the kitchen had, nothing special, just some eggs, toast and bacon, and again he was off.

He made it to the dining room, where Bowser thankfully hadn’t gotten lost, and handed him everything he brought. “Uh… not to rush you. B-but the meeting with P-peach is in less than ten minutes.” Luigi urged.

Bowser’s face turned annoyed. “Well, why didn’t ya say somethin’ earlier?! It’s embarrassing to show up late!” A familiar smoke rose from his nostrils but instead of throwing a tantrum he began to scarf down his food. Luigi had forgotten to get anything for himself in his rush.

Bowser spared him a glance and then tossed him the piece of toast without saying another word. Luigi couldn’t help the smile that had appeared upon his face and he ate it with the same speed as Bowser ate his meal.

When Bowser was done, Luigi told him to leave his plate because they needed to get going. The pair ran together, down the halls, running into toads with Luigi shouting apologies in their wake.

Toadsworth and Mario waited outside the meeting room, it was the same one where Luigi was first given his task to be Bowser’s knight. “There you are.” Toadsworth scolded as soon as they were in eyesight. “We have been expecting you.”

Luigi blurted out an apology which helped ease Toadsworth’s sour mood. The elder toad simply asked if they could be on time next time, and ushered Bowser inside without another word.

Toadsworth then instructed the two brothers to wait outside the room. As soon as they were both inside the room and the doors closed, Luigi sighed and leaned against the wall, fighting off the sleepiness that began to creep behind his eyes.

“So, how’s the knight job going?” Mario asked.

“What?” Luigi asked, leaning towards his brother in the crowded hallway.

“How’s the knight job going?” Mario said, albeit a little louder this time.

“It’s been going good!” Luigi quietly exclaimed.

Mario’s eyes widened and he grinned. “Really? That’s great then!”

“Mhm! We finally went on that tour of the castle today and he had me go to the meeting with him.” Luigi explained. “It was sort of fun.”

“I’m glad you’re having a good time.” Mario beamed. “Did he ever come back and get you from the hall yesterday?”

“He did. We um…” Luigi paused, unsure. “He convinced me to sneak out and we had a picnic in a meadow near here.”

“Nice,” Mario shrugged at the confession of sneaking out. “Did that go okay?”

“Well, uh, for the most part. He sort of let me fall out the window?” Luigi rambled. “Then we got into a small argument, but it’s okay, we’re fine now.”

“He let you fall out of a window?!” Mario yelled, causing Luigi to shush him.

“Shhh! Yes, it’s fine. I’m okay.” Luigi said, covering Mario’s mouth. “It’s really not that big of a deal.”

Mario glared at him and tried speaking through his younger brother’s hand. “It is! Who just lets someone fall out the window? Especially their knight?!”

Luigi shrugged and lowered his hand. “Maybe he just didn’t notice in time?”

“Didn’t he leave you in the hall because he was grumpy too?”

“That’s in the past.”

“Sure, sure. This guy is just a jerk. I’m going to-”

Luigi fidgeted with his hands. “No, don’t do anything! C’mon bro, you haven’t even given him a chance, maybe he’s just nervous because he’s marrying her? Or maybe it’s because he was tired from the trip? Or is it a mix of both?”

Mario crossed his arms and raised one of his eyebrows. Luigi gave his best smile, which he was sure wasn’t going to win any awards based on how nervous he felt. “I promise I’ll tell you if anything else happens. Just one more chance.”

Mario sighed. “Fine, but please Lu, keep that promise.”

Luigi beamed and nodded his head up and down so quickly it hurt. “I promise.”

His brother laughed under his breath, rolling his eyes. “Thanks, now don’t give yourself whiplash from doing that so fast.”

“Oh! Right!”

. . .

Bowser had been in the castle a week and there was a noticeable switch in the air with him joining the mushroom kingdom’s routine. There was a certain terror hanging over the castle and it would follow him in whatever room he was in.

Luigi didn’t seem to mind it and was adjusting surprisingly well. While he always liked routine and the mundane, he eventually decided that this job wasn’t too bad; Bowser was a nice break in the repetition. Besides, the king could be fun to talk to sometimes, the keyword being sometimes. Although Luigi could go without the heart palpitations whenever Bowser got mad.

Today they were summoned to the gazebo on the lawn of the castle. Peach had said there was a meeting planned for that day with Princess Daisy and Rosalina of the neighboring empire.

Bowser and Luigi were already on their way and in eyesight of the gazebo when Daisy started to grin widely, waving wildly at Luigi. “Hey Weegee!” She shouted, cupping her hands over her mouth. Rosalina and Peach were lightly laughing in the background. “Who’s the big guy with you?” Daisy continued to yell.

Peach got Daisy's attention and said something to her. Luigi and Bowser were both out of earshot, but they watched as Daisy's jaw dropped and she looked back and forth at Peach and Bowser. They started talking and Bowser chuckled.

“Guessed they figured out who I was huh?” Bowser laughed.

“Seems like it.”

They said nothing more. The king, followed closely by his knight, finally arrived at the table, sitting down on the chair next to Peach. Luigi stood at his side.

“Wait before we start let's find a chair for Weegee.” Daisy commanded, already getting up from her seat.

“No, he’s fine. He’s doing his job; he doesn’t need a chair.” Bowser quickly rebutted, having the same amount of authority in his voice.

Daisy opened her mouth, ready to get mad at the koopa but Rosalina looped her arm around Daisy’s and pulled her back down into her chair. Rosalina gently patted it and gave her a comforting look. The Sarasaland princess seemed to cool off and motioned for Peach to say something.

“Thank you for joining us for planning.” Peach said. “We-”

“What’re we planning?” Bowser asked, already slouching.

Peach gently sucked in a breath of air. “Our wedding. Daisy and Roaslina are here to help.”

“Huh. Alright. What’re we gonna do?”

“All of us are brainstorming that right now.” Peach said, her hands held tightly clasped in her lap. She gave Bowser a strained smile. Daisy slightly glared at him, rolling her eyes.

“It may be the best idea to start with a theme. Then, everything else will fall into place easier.” Rosalina suggested, her silky voice cutting through the thick tension.

“It’s a royal wedding, isn’t it?” Bowser asked, irritatedly gesturing with his hands. “That’s the theme.”

“While that is correct, it just might be a pleasant idea to try something new. Daisy and I-”

“I don’t really care about what you and Daisy think. It’s my wedding.”

“You mean it’s Peach’s and your wedding?” Daisy snapped back.

Smoke lightly billowed out of Bowser’s nostrils. “Obviously.” He growled.

“Um- What if you had it here, in t-the royal gardens?” Luigi spoke up. Everyone turned to look at him and his heart skipped a beat. Trying to gather some confidence, he continued. “B-because it’s big enough to hold many people. And it f-fits the royal theme?”

Peach’s face filled with relief. “That is a marvelous idea, Luigi.”

Daisy and Rosalina nodded their heads. Daisy, giving a thumbs up to Luigi, her enthusiastic smile having been returned.

“You’re smarter than I thought, greenie.” Bowser said. All signs of anger had left his voice. He turned to Luigi, a smirk placed on his lips.

Luigi felt his face heat up slightly. “O-oh. Th-thanks.” He looked off to the side, trying to avoid Bowser’s alluring gaze.

“We could pick out a color scheme too.” Peach noted. “I like the idea of pink, how about you?”

Bowser thought for a moment. “I like red. That’s just like a darker shade of pink, right? We should just go with that. It’s a really powerful color too, perfect for a couple of rulers.”

Luigi noticed that Peach’s smile faltered for just a fraction of a second, it was almost undetectable. “That sounds great.” She said, quickly glancing at Daisy, her face fully turned away from Bowser and Luigi for a moment.

“Wha- what about b-both?” Luigi blurted out. He just had to open his big mouth. But none of this was fair for Peach! She should at least have her favorite color at her wedding. Someone needed to say something about it.

Rosalina nodded. “Luigi brings up a valid point. Using those two colors would show that the alliance between the two kingdoms, and the marriage of the both of you, is powerful but soft and kind. Red shows your strength; pink shows your compassion.”

Bowser sat in silence, running the idea through his head. “Hmm not bad. I guess that’ll be fine.”

“Perfect!” Peach beamed. “Next up, we’ll also need to make a guest list. Have any ideas of who you want to invite?”

“Well, my family obviously.” Bowser started, scoffing.

“Obviously.” Daisy echoed in an almost mocking tone, having deepened her voice subtly.

Luigi had to fight the smile that had begun to creep on his face. Rosalina didn’t fight the one that showed up on hers, she just hid it gracefully with her hand. Peach looked like she was ready to become sleeping beauty herself and sleep for at least a hundred years after this conversation.

“It seems like today wasn’t the day to have this meeting. Perhaps we will have it at a later date. By a show of hands, how does everyone feel about that idea?” Peach suggested.

Daisy and Rosalina raised their hands in sync. Bowser raised his hand high and proudly in the air, with Luigi holding his close to his side only for Peach to see.

“I’m glad we could all find that we agree on that, we’ll reconvene at another date.” Peach let out another sigh. “Daisy and Rosalina are remaining in the kingdom for the rest of the day. Bowser, you’re free to leave as you please.”

“Alright, this sure was somethin’, see ya later Peaches.” Bowser said, aggressively getting up from his chair. “C’mon greenie, we have things to do.”

“Oh, okie dokie!” Luigi sprinted after the koopa who was stomping across the lawn. He waved to the group of princesses and caught up with Bowser, who was mumbling something under his breath that Luigi couldn’t catch.

“Uh, are you feeling okay...?” Luigi gently asked. He fidgeted with his hands while walking.

“Doin’ just dandy.” Bowser growled.

“Oka-”

“It’s just that, why does Peach hate me so much? I didn’t even do anything!” Bowser yelled, the toads around turning to them only to turn away and whisper to the person closest to them.

“W-well, you didn’t r-really hear her out.” Luigi said quietly. If looks could kill, Luigi would be dead with the glare Bowser shot at him after he told him that. “B-but maybe you’re r-right!” He quickly added.

Bowser rolled his eyes and continued his fit. "And she thinks that her little ‘signal’ to that Daisy person was slick. Does she think I’m stupid or somethin’?”

“I- I don’t think she thinks t-that. She’s just g-getting used to you and sometimes getting along with new people is… is hard?” Luigi put on his best reassuring smile all while freaking out in his head, hoping Bowser would buy what he had to say. “Daisy is also j-just like that. She’s kind of… kind of intense but that’s only because she c-cares.”

“Bah, whatever. It doesn’t matter. Let’s just go do somethin’ else.”

Luigi held back a sigh. Every time Bowser was starting to get likable, it was like he sensed it and would turn on a ‘be the rudest person alive’ switch in his brain. It was hard to even handle an afternoon with him, Luigi had no idea how Peach was going to survive a whole marriage with the guy.

. . .

Mario, Luigi, Toad, Peach, Daisy and Rosalina were all sitting in a circle on the toadstool princess’ floor, playing a card game together. Bowser had been busy that day, relieving Luigi of his duties, claiming he had ‘very important kingly duties’ to get to and Luigi ‘wouldn’t understand he was just a knight.’

Luigi had gracefully taken the opportunity to get a break and hang out with some of his friends who he saw less than often. It was a plus that they got to play a card game too.

“Hey, could you stop making me draw cards?!” Daisy said, definitely louder than what was needed for the small group, snatching a card from the pile in the middle of the room. “We already have so fucking many!”

Luigi laughed, looking down at his and Mario’s hand of cards. He still had two more cards that made Daisy draw cards instead of taking her turn. “I can’t promise anything.”

Daisy groaned and glared at him. She turned to Rosalina lowering back down to an inside voice. “Can you believe this guy?”

Rosalina softly laughed and shook her head. “I cannot, how dare he do this to us. We must find a way to get him back. Does anyone have a reverse?”

A chorus of no’s greeted the pair. “Better luck next time, love. We’ll get him back.” Rosalina said, a smile tugging at her lips as she watched Daisy look like she got the wind knocked out of her.

Rosalina took a card from their large hand and placed it on the pile. “You may go now.” She gently said to Toad and Peach.

Peach and Toad whispered to each other, looking at their cards then the pile, then the cards, over and over again. Daisy rolled her eyes, placing a hand on her hip. They finally decided to pick a card and placed it on the pile.

It was an action card that would make Mario and Luigi draw two cards, luckily for them, the brothers still had a trick up their sleeves. Luigi beamed, trying to keep his giggles quiet as he placed down another card that would make the next player draw two. This meant Daisy and Rosalina had to draw four.

Daisy put her head in her hands, angrily grumbling to herself. “This is so unfair…”

Rosalina still appeared to be unaffected, only letting out a monotone, “May the stars shine down on us…”

Peach giggled. “It seems like next time I need to be on Luigi’s team.”

“Hey!” Toad screamed. “I’m a good teammate!”

“I know you are, I just want to try Luigi’s luck, that’s all.”

“Hmph.” Toad huffed. A silence fell over the group as they all played the game, everything going smoothly and Daisy was thankfully getting better cards than she had been before.

“So,” Toad began, interrupting the quiet. “I heard from my assistant’s second cousin’s mom’s friend that one of the maids is having an affair with her husband’s dad.” Luigi’s jaw dropped hearing that little tidbit.

They all listened to Toad spread his gossip as per usual and Luigi felt calmer than he had in days. It was nice to be away from his job and be with his friends.

. . .

It was meeting, after meeting, after meeting, for Luigi. Knight duties weren’t as glamorous as everyone assumed. Bowser invited him into one, instead of waiting out in the hall, where he just made comments to Luigi the entire time. It wasn’t that the knight didn’t enjoy it, in fact he thought it was quite amusing, it was just tiring having a day full of just idling sitting there.

Luigi yawned, ready to be done with being a knight for the day. They were outside Bowser’s room, and the green knight was just about to say his goodnights to the king. Unfortunately, as he always did, Bowser had other plans.

“Hey, do ya wanna try going back to that meadow tonight?” Bowser yawned as well.

Luigi tilted his head and made a face at him. “Huh?”

“The meadow. You know? The one from the first night I was here?”

“Oh, Right! Um, M-may I speak honestly?”

Bowser had a lopsided smile on his face, one of his eyebrows raised. “Go ahead.”

“I’m um- I’m a bit tired and as much as I like being your knight, I’d much prefer to sleep right now.” Luigi admitted, fidgeting with his hands, staring straight at the floor.

Bowser didn’t answer which made his already racing heart go even faster. “Hmm, that’s fine. But only because I’m so generous.” Luigi’s head shot up and he began to grin uncontrollably. Based on how Bowser was he wasn’t expecting such a good reaction, but this was like if he stuck gold.

“Thank you, Bowser.” Luigi said, bowing towards him and getting ready to leave. “Goodnight, my king.”

Bowser rolled his eyes at the nickname. “It was my pleasure. G‘night, sweet dreams, my knight.” Bowser said, playfully bowing to Luigi as well. His eyes shone with mirth. Luigi’s heart leapt at what Bowser called him, but he ignored it. He waved at Bowser and off he went, trying to get to his room as fast as he could so he could fall asleep.

Notes:

GUYS BOWSER WILL GET BETTER I PROMISE!! This chapter is kinda not the best, but it sat in my drafts half-finished and threw me into a several month writer's block, so I needed it GONE FROM MY CONSCIOUS before I completely wrote off this whole fic. Anyways-

Hello Bowuigi nation! It’s been almost a year haha. Pretty sure I’m not going to do regular updates anytime soon but figured an update before the end of the year would be nice at the very least. I know it’s not a lot, but I hope you all enjoyed it :) Anyways, my bad if anyone is too out of character it’s been a while so I’m a little rusty with writing these guys and writing in general haha

As always, thank you so much for reading my silly little fic, and I hope your day is wonderful and remember to drink your water, make sure you have eaten today, and get some rest!!!
