Loss of a Mother

Summary:

Shepard dies leaving her Krogan son behind.

Work Text:

It was over.

It was finally over.

She had done what no one could.

She ended the Reaper threat and in the process she united the galaxy's races.

With everything she had done for the galaxy, it hurt that she’d get nothing in return. Not now anyway.

Grunt stood amongst the rubble that used to be London, various men and women doing their best to clear the way to recover the fallen. Grunt’s presence seemed to unnerve some who had never been so close to a Korgan.

Wrex approached him from behind. The older Krogan watched the younger with pity. He knew that Shepard and Grunt had a very parental relationship ever since she opened his tank. Wrex saw the relationship for what it was as soon as he saw them together on Tuchanka. He’d never been prouder of a human until Shepard stepped up to mother a fully grown Krogan baby. They had become close over the years so it hurt Wrex greatly to be part of the group tasked with retrieving her body from underneath the mountain of rubble.

“Kid,” Wrex clapped a heavy hand on the young Krogan’s back as he came to stand beside him.

“Wrex,” he responded, his clawed hands clenched in front of him. He was very grateful to have Wrex with him. He wasn’t as comfortable around the humans and the Normandy was nowhere to be found as of yet so his friends were lost in space for all he knew.

“Any sign?”

“Nope,” Grunt sighed with disappointment.

“We’ll find her,” Wrex reassured before he joined the humans in moving the rubble and scattered metal from the pile.

Grunt gaze down at his hands, unfolding the paper he had been clutching. The drawing he made for Shepard stared back at him. IT was nothing special of course, just a crudely drawn Shepard and Grunt together on the Normandy with the words ‘Happy mother’s day’ written at the top of the page. He hoped they found her soon. Grunt just wished they’d find her alive.
