Work Text:
Like everyone in the Underworld, Bronya was raised to believe that the underworld and the surface could never unite together. They were here, fighting for their lives while the surface residents had easy lives. Whether it is the frequent attacks from monsters or vagrants, anyone could have died either way.
Upon fleeing from Rivet Town during the monster attacks, Bronya was taken in by Oleg - the leader of Wildfire. To the inhabitants of the Underworld, the Wildfire are the only line of defense against monsters and vagrants. What is even more surprising is that they are also fighting a war against robots - those that belong to Svarog, who is also a robot probably as old as time. Bronya became a commander for Wildfire.
Since Cocolia's ascension to power, any contact with the overworld was cut off. The Silvermane Guards withdrew from the Underworld, leaving them defenseless. Bronya knew this was a sick power play that Cocolia is trying. Oleg tried to reason with her to no avail, leaving them to die either by cold or by the attackers that frequently ravaged them.
On the other hand, the Geomarrow that the surface world needs to make their heaters came from the Underworld. The trade between the two sides became harder with Cocolia’s laws. Bronya had a feeling that Rand was hiding something, knowing that she could have hidden something that could benefit only herself.
All hope for the underworld seems to have been lost until… Freaking Sampo Koski brought in these so-called Outworlders. The outworlders consisted of a man with black hair and teal eyes, a girl with pink hair and a man with silver hair. The only thing that shouts outworlder is the way they dressed as it looked like none of the clothing - either overworlder or underworlder - that they had.
To Bronya’s dismay, Sampo (that dumbass) also brought Cocolia’s daughter - the prissy princess Seele Rand. Maybe her first impressions of Seele weren't the best because the latter was quick to pick fights - an unlikely characteristic for the next Supreme Guardian to possess. Seele almost picked a fight with Luka, but thankfully, Bronya managed to interfere before they could get worse.
Bronya also finds out that Seele hid a side of herself from her mother Cocolia. In actuality, she was as determined and strong-headed as Bronya. She picked fights with anyone who dared to face her, especially if her morals and ideals were questioned. Lastly, Seele hated being her mother’s right hand. She had major disagreements with her mother regarding the overall well-being of everyone, only to be dismissed. That caused the fire within Seele to burn brighter.
Rivet Town’s orphanage was as memorable, having so many memories of an easier and simpler time. Oleg took her there upon discovering that she lived in the worst streets of the town. Bronya was a child - playing with other children, learning and studying with Natasha, and growing up patrolling the mines. That all ended when a fragmentum opened in Rivet Town. Monsters invaded the town, forcing them to flee. Ever since, they have stayed in Boulder Town.
Bronya holds the rails, overlooking the melancholy sight of what was used to be the lively Rivet Town. Seele stood beside her while also looking at the distance. The playground of the orphanage remained undisturbed despite the attacks. Earlier, they were accompanied by an outworlder who calls himself Dan Heng (weird name) to retrieve the supplies needed for the general public in Boulder Town. Once they did, Dan Heng went ahead, leaving Bronya and Seele still overlooking the distance
Bronya learned one thing from Seele: the latter also came from the Underworld. To be specific, the very same orphanage that Bronya was brought to as a child. It turns out the Supreme Guardian can choose a child from both worlds to be her successor. In this case, Cocolia chose Seele.
“I envy you, you know.” Seele chuckled, looking back at Bronya.
“Huh? How so?” Bronya replied. How could someone be envious of a life so apocalyptic? They lived here everyday, fighting for their lives.
“Ugh…” Seele answered with a groan, “You know, life being a princess ain't easy! It's always ‘Mind your language, Seele’, or ‘This is what the Architects wanted, Seele’, or ‘A lady doesn't speak like that, Seele’. Sometimes even, ‘Don’t speak like an underworlder, Seele’. Whatever they say doesn't even make sense!”.
“Really? ‘A lady doesn't speak like that'?” Bronya was unimpressed. How should a lady speak anyway? It gave her the impression that ladies in the overworld are not as free in terms of opinions. “How do you speak anyway?” She asked.
“I’m gonna kick your ass until next Tuesday if you come here with no shit in your hands!” Seele declared. Bronya’s eyes widened at the foul language as she never would have expected this from a future Supreme Guardian. No wonder why people were so strict with Seele’s speech patterns.
“Maybe I won't ask soon.” Bronya replied.
“Really? That's just a midget of the things I say when I get mad.” Seele laughed. Bronya does not even want to know what the rest of the things the former says.
“Everything… All of this doesn't make sense.” Seele added with a sigh, “Why would mom seal off the underworld? We are all trying to survive here.”.
“I never thought that we'd be in the same place.” Bronya admitted. She didn't even know the things that the overworlders go through. Does she want to know? Do they die all the same? Do they celebrate the same things as them?
After the fight with Svarog, they found out that the several generations of Supreme Guardians tried to destroy the Stellaron. The stellaron had descended from the skies, destroying the legion of monsters that ravaged Jarilo-VI. Ever since, the Supreme Guardians would attempt destroying them with several researchers keeping data of their progress. However, when Cocolia ascended, she decided to bury all this data, including Svarog himself as a machine who possessed such data.
“So, what are you going to do next? Svarog’s revelation is quite an impactful knowledge to you?” Bronya asked.
“I don't know.” Seele answered, “As the guardian’s successor, I was trained to be prepared for everything, but everything doesn't include dealing with a literal cancer of worlds.”. According to one of the outworlders - the white-haired man named Caelus, the Stellarons were created by the Aeon of Destruction to wreak havoc in the universe. One Stellaron could eternally alter the state of a galaxy or a planet, just like Jarilo-VI.
“What even doesn't make sense is why does my mom want to hunt down the outworlders who only know a thing about what Stellarons are.” Seele added, “It just doesn't make sense. Is she crazy or what?”.
“I can't answer that in front of the Supreme Guardian’s heir.” Bronya replied with a chuckle.
“Whatever. I know what to do.” Seele shrugged off her reply, popping the joints in her shoulder. Could she be planning to fight the Supreme Guardian - her own mother? Bronya knows Seele long enough to know her next move.
“Are you going to fight her?” She sounds frightened and unsure, concerned of the heir’s intentions.
“Good grief, hell no!” Seele answered, raising her hands, “I know I'm crazy, but not that crazy! I'm just gonna ask her shit.”.
Bronya looked at Seele in disbelief, “You're not serious, are you?”. However, the determined look on the latter’s face says otherwise. “Oh great Amber Lord, you are.” She exclaimed in a rather surprised deadpan voice.
“Just tell our outworlder friends about this.” Seele said, her face grim as if she is accepting her fate, “If I don't return, then you and the outworlders would know what to do.”.
“I understand that you have made your mind and I can never get you to change it.” Bronya vowed, holding Seele’s hands, “If you ever get in trouble, I vow to be there, to save you, and to raise arms against those who hurt you.”.
Seele smiles, “I know you'll hold up to it.”.
