Flower fields.
Places that never fail to please the eye. Countless flowers line up together to create vibrant displays atop the soft ground, for countless miles. In this case, the flowers were a ray of white and violet carnations. It was quiet except for the occasional shrill song of the winds and hum of the bees.
The carnation field surrounded a short hill. At the very top of it lay a huge oak tree. It blocked the sunlight of two loving travellers, Egobworder and Follower.
They were currently taking a break from one of their long travels. Egobworder usually wanders off alone; this time, Follower had decided to join his lover.
Egobworder was sitting on a high tree branch, leaning his back on the tree trunk and fiddling with his fingers in boredom. His helmet and blade were neatly placed next to Follower, who was making a flower crown out of surrounding carnations. He neatly tucked each flower's stems into hoops, lacing them together in a pattern of white and violet carnations.
"Art thee done?" Egobworder asked deadpan. He crossed his arms and rolled his head back.
Follower tilted his head to the side, "With what?"
" That !" The knight pointed at the crown, "This breaketh is too boring."
"Well then, no. Not at all." A smile Egobworder couldn't see crept up on Follower's face. Though, Egobworder could've sworn he saw Follower slowing down his craft in spite.
"I'm tired of waiting. This breaketh has't me more tired than our journey," The teal-horned demon flailed his arms around to emphasize his annoyance, "There is nothing fun to do h're."
"Learn how to take a breaketh," It was ironic for Follower to say, yet Egobworder didn't bother to interrupt his lover, "Thee has't been riding on thy sword this entire journey; I have not. I bethink it is only fair I get some rest."
"Thee sayeth that as if thee can't just fly thyself." The knight eyed the other’s long, pale wings.
"Mine own wings grow tired as well. Thy blade doest not."
"If mine own blade is such a big problem, wherefore I not teach thee to fly on it? There shan’t be any complaint after that." Egobworder emphasised the 'such' for longer than he should have.
"Do not." Follower warned.
Egobworder, of course, proudly ignored the warning, "I will!"
"Thee knoweth how badly thee did fail to teach me how to ride a mere skateboard, Right? Do thee think it wouldst change if it were floating sword instead?" Follower reminded his partner about a ‘ tragic ’ past event.
It was when the lovers were in the back alley of a friend's cafe; when Egobworder convinced Follower to skate with him... Unfortunately, it ended up with Follower embarrassingly bashing his head into the cafe's back door. Alarmed, the baker rushed outside while holding a broom, prepared to shoo away any racoons rattling in the bins. Instead, there were no racoons yet two weird friends of his. Having to explain what had happened made Follower die of embarrassment.
"That wast years ago!!" The knight added. "Thee told me to enjoy my break, didn't thee? Well, this is how I shall!"
Follower finally gave up, "...Fine. Come here first, wonneth 't thee?"
The knight did as told and swiftly moved his gear and helmet away from where he'd sit. He sat down right next to his lover, who wrapped the other with his wing. Egobworder always liked it when the winged demon did that. It never failed to make him feel safe-- or at least a bit safer. Smiling, he closed his eyes and rubbed the back of his neck.
A subtle plop was heard and Ego could feel a light force atop his head. His eyes peered open to the sight of his partner smiling at him dearly. He touched his head to feel the soft petals of the flower crown Follower was making. The knight felt a vague tint of teal crawl up on his cheeks.
"Purple looks very charming on thee."
Egobworder tried to hide how flustered he felt at that moment, "Of course it does!!" But ultimately failed, resulting in both snickering into laughter. It was soon broken by Follower holding the other's right cheek and pecking the other. Ego's lips curled up into a bold smile.
Egobworder wasted no time and quickly stood up. He reached a hand to his lover, who gladly took it and pulled himself up with it. The knight swiftly pulled his blade out of the ground and threw it in the air. It gracefully swung back near his legs.
He leant his hand to his lover, yet again. This time, the winged demon was hesitant but gave in anyway. He had to mentally prepare himself and, honestly, pray the outcome of this wouldn't be as embarrassing as last time.
"Come on!" Egobworder pulled the follower closer, making him step a leg onto the sword. It bounced down by the weight. They were now holding both of each other's hands.
The knight instructed, "Now the oth'r!"
"This is going to endeth badly." Follower shook his head and squeezed his lover's gloved hands.
"Don't jinx it."
Egobworder pulled Follower yet again in hopes that he'd get his other foot on the blade as well. He ultimately failed as Follower lost balance, started leaning on Ego and immediately began to spread his wings to 'help' him balance.
"Nononono-- put thy wings back," said Egobworder, "Thou art going to fall with them out."
"I am sure I shall fall either way." The shake did not leave Follower's voice. Egobworder found it hilarious that his lover looked so serious and threatening in battle, and yet he still managed to be scared to death by riding a mere skateboard, or sword in this case.
Nervously, the winged demon slowly retracted his wings and put his other leg on the sword. He sighed in relief that he hadn't fallen yet.
"There! Thee didst it!" The teal-horned demon steadily let go of this lover's hands. Follower had a betrayed look on his face. He held out his arms for balance beside him. He remembered Egobworder doing so, so it must be helpful. Right?
The winged demon was now standing on the floating sword. On his own. It would've felt like an achievement if it weren't for the fact that he was praying he wouldn't fall.
"Now wh--"
Egobworder pushed the hilt of his blade with his foot and sent Follower flying towards the field of carnations. A few feathers flew off as the follower whizzed through the field in a straight line. Ego was impressed that Follower managed to stay on the sword for this long.
Of course, all ' good ' things come to an end as the winged demon falls on a patch of carnations with a THUD and CLANG . A mix of vibrant petals and pale feathers flew up into the air from his fall, and soon floated back on the ground and him. The teal-horned demon ran-walked to his lover, trying to hide his obvious laughter. He blocked the sunlight from going into his lover's face by looking down at him. A huge grin plastered onto his face.
"This is just liketh what happened lasteth time." Follower blew a violet petal out of his face. He acted a bit hurt despite his landing being completely softened by the soft ground and flowers
"Did thou have a safe landing?" The knight joked.
Follower responded deadpan, "On one's poor wings, yes." before starting to laugh himself.
"You maketh it look so easy."
Egobworder put his arms behind his head and plopped himself right next to Follower, while also making sure he didn't ruin the flower crown that was still on his head, "Do thee waneth to try again?"
"With thou's way of teaching? Nev'r again."
Egobworder suddenly quoted an old saying the two used to always hear, "Thee shall nev'r learn if thee bethinks like that."
"I bethink our break is over." Follower said whilst smiling; not moving or doing anything else to suggest it was over.
"Hah!" Egobworder spat out.
The conversation ended as they both stared off at the sunset. It was a beautiful blend of orange and scarlet, that was stained by a pattern of purple clouds. The sky was accompanied by the golden silhouette of the sun, which was partly covered by pitch-black trees.
Follower took a deep breath of the fresh air and closed his eyes. Maybe the break can last a little longer.
