The Stage Manager did not understand all of the romantic plotlines he spoke of.
He could comprehend what was happening in them, sure, but he couldn't relate the way he figured he ought to.
He didn't understand the incessant need that each person felt to get married as soon as possible nor did he ever imagine himself performing that task.
Maybe he was strange for that. He wasn't quite sure. Regardless, everyone seemed to respect him well enough so he didn't let himself be bothered by it.
He was a storyteller after all. He told of other people's stories.
No one was entitled to his.
