Chapter 1
October 31, 1981
Nookie the house elf was beside herself with grief. Her master, James, was dead. His lady, Missy Lily, was dead, too. Worst of all, Dumbledore said Nookie could not stay with baby Harry, whom she had barely saved from the bad man. Nookie wanted to punish herself forever for being too late to save Master James and Missy Lily. She had arrived just in time for Missy Lily to shout instructions at her.
“Not Harry! Please … have mercy … have mercy … Not Harry! Not Harry! Please - I’ll do anything.” Her missy yelled the words at the bad man but she had eyes only for Nookie. Lily had nodded at Nookie, who had been inches from trying to protect her missy. Lily wanted Harry protected, not herself. She was the best mummy Nookie had seen since Missy Dorea. Not that Philemone had been a bad mother to James, she had just not been the most patient woman. She left James to his own devices too often. It made the boy desperate for attention and a little prankster to boot.
When Sirius had arrived to take baby Harry, Nookie had stayed behind to care for the bodies of her Master and Missy. Nookie had been shocked to learn Sirius had handed baby Harry over to Hagrid for safe keeping at Hogwarts. When Nookie had arrived at the school, Nookie was heartbroken when the mean, nasty Headmaster had kept her from baby Harry. He said baby Harry would go to stay with the muggles and Nookie must stay at Hogwarts until baby Harry called for her.
Nookie had disobeyed for the first time in her life. She snuck off to see baby Harry one last time. The big man, Hagrid, had the baby. He was taking good care of her little master but he was not Nookie or Lily. Harry was happy but kept asking for them both and for his father. He would cry occasionally and ask for Pa’foot or Moo’ey. Nookie watched carefully and as soon as the big man turned his back, Nookie jumped forward and put the tiny, shrunken trunk in the tiny pocket on the little boy’s pants. The spell she had placed on the trunk would keep it hidden from everyone except herself, Sirius, and Harry. Another elf spell would keep the trunk near the boy until he could open it.
Nookie left a letter inside the trunk with hopes that the boy would open it and call for her, sooner rather than later. She was afraid for him. She knew the little rat, Peter Pettigrew, was still out there waiting. He had hurt her master and missy and might hurt her little master, too. Nookie couldn’t stand the worry. She popped away from little Harry, watching from the window again as the big man turned back to look at the baby. She hoped with all her heart her little master would call her soon.
~24 hours later~
“He won’t stop screaming,” the thin blonde woman shouted as the dark haired baby screamed on the floor. His face was red and his entire body shook with the effort of endless squawling.
“Ahhhh,” the man shouted. His wife’s nephew had been crying without ceasing for over 12 hours. They had found the green eyed little brat on the porch of all places. Vernon Dursley called into work and stayed home with his wife so they could figure out what to do now. They knew this kid was a freak, just like his parents. The furniture kept rising a few inches off of the floor before dropping with a bang. The Dursleys were terrified!
“I can’t think with all the noise! Just, throw him in the closet!” Vernon shouted to his wife, Petunia.
She squeaked as she set the child in the floor of the cupboard under the stairs and slammed the door shut, but she didn’t hesitate in the doing, for all that. It was silent for just a moment before the child, sitting terrified in the dark closet, shrieked. “Paaaaaaaaaa” sob “fooooooooooooot”.
All the windows in the living room shattered. The Dursleys slammed to the ground and covered their heads. Their own son was now sobbing and crying out for them from upstairs. The mother jumped up to see to her progeny while the father stood, enraged. Vernon stomped over to the cupboard under the stairs, yanked the door open, and bent down with his fist pulled back ready to wallup the little shite that had just cost him thousands of dollars only to find the tiny space was completely empty. Harry Potter was gone.
