Summary
A scarred young fox raised by vermin in Southsward after his mother was murdered. A stern young Badger Lady, once in a mercenary band from Southsward. Normally, they would be enemies, and yet...they have always been close, ever since they served on the same corsair ship.
But now the former Badger Lord, wanting to tear up ancient history, has taken over Southsward with a large army of former Long Patrol hares and other woodlanders, enslaving vermin and killing "vermin sympathizers" in revenge for countless seasons of bad blood. Even the Father Abbot of Redwall has sent supplies to the former Badger Lord.
However, a Brother of Redwall, disagreeing with the Abbot along with three other young creatures, has taken Martin the Warrior's sword, banished from Redwall forever, finding safety in Salamandastron with the remainder of the Long Patrol.
Now the fox, the Badger Lady, a ship full of corsairs from their youth, two-score Long Patrol hares, and the four creatures of Redwall must find a way to stop the Badger Lord from his rampage across Southsward and possibly beyond, not knowing the sacrifices they must make, not knowing that a fair number of them will die...
