slowly, slowly

Summary:

“What happened?” he murmurs, voice gruff from sleep.

“Dunno. You were sleeping, but your breathing changed. I woke you up in case you were having a bad dream or something,” Yoongi says plainly, not looking away from his screen. He doesn’t want to put too much focus on Yijeong, doesn’t want to embarrass him. It’s not easy for him to admit when he needs help, so Yoongi doesn’t push.

---

A typical day (night) in the studio, but Yijeong has a bad dream.

Notes:

You can take this as either platonic or romantic. Bangtan are implied to be in some sort of polycule for like 1 line but that's it (so no different from reality lmaooo)

If you havent watched the new episode of Suchwita with Yijeong, I suggest you do! But it's not really required before reading :)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Yoongi is in his studio, working on whatever is sparking inspiration at the moment, when it happens.

Yijeong is fast asleep on his couch. They were supposed to be working together, but Yijeong fell asleep after the first thirty minutes. Yoongi wasn’t feeling particularly talkative today, so the dark, cool room and the rhythmic tapping of the mouse and keyboard did Yijeong in, he guessed.

Not that Yoongi minded. Yijeong looked so tired lately. They all looked tired lately, from the rest of Bangtan, to the producers, to the logistical staff. If Yijeong needed a cat nap, Yoongi was not going to deprive him of it.

All of the sudden, Yoongi noticed that Yijeong’s breath starts getting quicker, uneven. A whimper or two slipped past his lips. How long had this been going on? Did he miss it at first, too immersed in his work? Yoongi turns to look at him and finds Yijeong’s fists and jaw all clenched up.

He doesn’t let it go on for long.

“Yah. Yijeong-ah,” he says, louder and more forceful than normal, as he turns back to his computer. “You okay?”

Yijeong doesn’t answer right away, but Yoongi can hear him stir in the background. He takes a big breath, sounding more like he’s just run down the hallway rather than woken up from a nap, then sighs as he shifts to sit.

There’s a pause between them; complete silence. Yoongi isn’t even doing anything with the beat on the screen anymore, he just doesn’t want to look Yijeong in the eye.

“You know what my breathing sounds like when I sleep?!” Yijeong asks, incredulous.

Yoongi shrugs. “I’ve already memorized at least six others, seven if you count Holly,” he says, like it's the most normal thing in the world. “One more wasn’t too hard.”

Yijeong says nothing in return, though Yoongi does hear him shift around a bit, ruffle his own hair to put it back into some semblance of order. After another second and Yoongi catches back up with his train of thought. He starts clicking away at the beat on screen again.

He works like that in silence for another ten or so minutes. After some more adjustments, he plays the beat out loud for what must be the 300th time. After it’s done, Yijeong has nothing to add.

Carefully, Yoongi glances over his shoulder to get a good look at Yijeong, his head turning slow, as if he might find something he didn’t like lurking on his couch.

As if he could ever not like Yijeong. Aside from the rest of Bangtan, Yoongi couldn’t name anyone he was closer with.

Nothing unsavory lurks on Yoongi’s studio couch. No, just a still very tired looking Yijeong scrolling on his phone, brows knit together like he was trying to solve all the world’s problems at once.

Everything in Yoongi’s studio is going nowhere fast, so he figures the least he can do is take them somewhere, even if it’s slow. He saves the beat and closes the software out, then puts on a long playlist of lofi with heavy beats. The kind that get into your head and just make all the thoughts stop.

“Let’s rest, I’m tired,” he says, flinging himself onto the couch next to Yijeong. The other man startles a bit, but relaxes into Yoongi’s side after he’s assessed that the situation is comfortable, quiet, safe.

Yijeong hesitates a bit, but then tosses his phone towards his bag. Yoongi’s shoulders sag in relief. He wasn’t going to force him to put it down, but he knew from experience that nothing worth their whiles was lurking on any sort of social media or messaging app. The for you page could wait for later, and few messages could be urgent enough to answer at 2 in the morning.

Yoongi loops his arm around Yijeong’s shoulders and they lean into each other. Physical affection doesn’t come naturally to either of them, but Yoongi knows for a fact that it will make Yijeong feel better, or at least relax. As the minutes pass they sag into each other’s sides more and more. Yoongi starts mumbling about some silly argument--disagreement-- he, Jin, and Taehyung got into the other day. Slowly, slowly, Yoongi’s deep voice lulls Yijeong back to sleep.
