Clara Oswald is normal.
She is exactly what everyone expects her to be. Exactly what they need her to be.
This isn't true at first, of course, but she learns how to lie and how to ignore the itching under her skin and how to be like everyone else. She teaches herself to be normal.
With the Doctor, she doesn't have to.
