The World We Knew

Summary:

First there was laughter and sunny warmth. Then there was screaming and the sky was crying along with us.

Andromaeda’s screams pierced my ears once more.
I will catch her– I have to!

I willed my limbs to go limp and closed my eyes. Securis and Nox were nowhere to be seen, I was falling to my death. A cold and wet death in unfamiliar land. The silence carried on for what seemed like forever.

The last thing I remember was the warmth of Securis’ scales and how his wings engulfed around me– how it felt contrasting with my rain-soaked body. And how I could not bear the pain of losing Andromaeda.

Notes:

Chapter 1: World Building and Characters

Chapter Text

People of Caelum (Sky)

An archipelago in the sky, abundant with thriving greenery; Caelum. Inhabited by their people and their subservient dragons. Ruled over by King Vaelor, Queen Gaudium and the Elders. Essentially everyone is able to bond with a dragon starting from birth, but those in the royal army and of royalty can be partnered and trained with wyverns.Commoners/non-royals bond with wyrms and drakes.

The people are of fae descent, akin to elves but not, they do have pointed ears but do not live for eternity. They also stand just shorter than elves. Also blessed with long lives and much vitality, they live high up above the clouds.

With little to no connection to the surface down below, Middle Earth, they are neutral for the most part.

Sauron and other dark forces have tried to take Caelum before but found it futile.

Accompanied with vast lakes and rivers that end on the island edges and give Middle-earth their rain.

Traditions/Culture

  • People of Caelum have tattoos on their back when they (1) come of age and bond with their dragon, (2) given a role within their society, (3) take on great feat/s, (4) marry. These markings become of great importance as they show who they are.
  • Braids are also a staple, generally treasured and hold importance along with memory. Having cut them off is either done in mourning or as a harsh form of punishment.

Wyverns :

  • Taken to war, used by the army, wear shimmering gold armour

Dragons (hierarchy)

  1. Western
  2. Amphitheres
  3. Lindworms
  4. Asian (Loong, Long, Lung)
  5. Drakes + Wyrms

Extinct/Loss

  • Fey dragon

(Original) Characters

Y/n L/n: Sworn Protector of Princess Andromaeda, trusted associate of the King Vaelor and Queen Gaudium

  • Lindworm, “Securis”, dark red and grey, with a set of wings (uncommon but not rare) paired with his two arms , both rider and dragon have visible scars

Y/n has a deep jagged scar that resembles a lop-sided cross on her right cheek, reaching from the corner of her mouth to her ear and just below the eye bag. Its deep and oppositely coloured as her flesh. As per Caelum traditions and culture, Y/n wears a single braid in her hair in a half up-half down style.

Princess Andromaeda: Y/n’s best friend since childhood. Second child and only daughter to King Vaelor and Queen Gaudium

  • Amphithere, “Nox”, covered in deep midnight blue feathers with few feathers fading to silver at the ends.

A full head of thick black hair, though in the sun you can see hints of navy blue and two braids above her ears in silver colour. Cool, pale skin and emotional brown eyes. Her hair is always found to be braided, kudos to the children of nobles she sees and teaches every so often.

Queen Gaudium: Eldest Daughter of Neomenia of the Old Moon

  • Western Dragon, “Aloysia” A pure white dragon with many horns and spinal spikes. Fully grown of ancient age, just like her rider.

Wears her salt and pepper hair in a high ponytail made of several braids, pale skin and green eyes. She is said to take after her father in her looks but also by his rule, as said by her advisors. Her hair reaches to around her lower back, she refused to cut it after Anwir’s betrayal/treason, however she did mourn in secret. She is a mother as well as a queen.

King Vaelor: Former Lord who descended from the court in the northern islands

  • Western Dragon, “Lark” Fully grown in ancient age, a black lindworm of which is missing an eye and majority of horns and spikes.

A stoic king, allegedly killed his son, crown prince Anwir at the end of his treason, fighting with his dragon and wyvern in which his dragon Lark lost a few… parts. Was indeed heartbroken but as a king did not mourn.

Prince Anwir: First born son of the King and Queen

  • Lindworm, “Merik”, had muddy brown scales with specks of black. Was considered larger than others her breed.

Fashioned a messy mop of true black hair with a rat tail of a braid always hanging off his shoulder. A rather introverted prince and was always straight to the point to where it was almost deemed as rude. As 35 years older than his sister the princess he found it hard to bond with her– and being the next king in line was stressful.
