Jumped The Gun for You, Doll

Summary:

Tamaki’s birthday arrives with a surprise at the agency, but no messages from the person he was hoping to get a message from. Although it seems he has a reason to see Katsuki, so maybe his birthday can be more than just the day his age goes up.

Notes:

Happy Birthday to Tamaki Amajiki AKA Suneater!!

I hope you enjoy this fic!!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Tamaki is walking beside Eijirou with his head down as he finally scrolls through his phone while they head into the Agency. He’d been ignoring it since his early morning shift, so he’s now wading through hundreds of birthday wishes texts. He’s a little overwhelmed with the amount of people that have texted him Happy Birthday, especially considering how many of them are from Eijirou’s friends that he’s somehow gotten closer since being patrol partners with Eijirou on patrols that he’s not running with FatGum since Fat has been heading towards retiring as a hero.

He has to force a blank look to avoid pouting when he doesn’t see anything from Katsuki because he doesn’t feel like being teased by Eijirou about his crush again. He’s managed to start falling for the other man, and Eijirou has made it very clear that he knows and supports it while also teasing Tamaki for being a mess every time he speaks to Katsuki.

Even just a couple days ago, when Katsuki came in early because of an interrogation of Malia Amialo. She’s a blue haired, gray-eyed woman who is definitely related to Oboro from what they got out of her interrogation. When she found out that her cousin ended up as a Nomu upon his death, not a villain by choice, she purposefully got herself caught to help stop her boss. It was kind of heartbreaking to hear because her boss is her lover, but she also lied to Malia about her cousin, her hero, in order to recruit her because she was able to teleport through clouds, making it easy to set up meetings as well as transferring the firepower and manpower from the states to Japan.

******

“Can’t believe she spent this whole time believing that Oboro was a villain all because the woman she fell in love with lied to her. That’s such a shitty way to fuckin’ recruit people, even if the recruitment didn’t start as a relationship thing, but it still fuckin’ sucks that she was told that shit and only just found out that it was all a lie used to keep her on Yua’s side.” muttered Katsuki as he stared at the blue haired girl, guilt in his voice as they all watched Aizawa hug her and tell her the story of her cousin, the true story.

“It’s so sad to realize that everything you thought was a lie, but for someone she trusted with everything to lie to her about someone that clearly mattered to her… That’s heartbreaking. I feel so sad for her because she found out everything that brought her to villainy was a lie. And to still feel guilty about betraying her, despite knowing how she’s been betrayed by her… It’s awful, but I guess part of the guilt comes from the quirk that forces them to be tied to Yua, controlled by Yua until Yua cuts the strings.” Tamaki’s voice was soft and sad as he turned away from the one-way window, feeling pain in his heart at what this young girl had been going through. To be young like that, deal with the pain of losing someone she was close to and have that be used to manipulate her against the heroes, it broke his heart.

“Hey, she’s gonna be okay. Zawa’s going to take care of her, I promise, and Eyebags can manipulate the quirk being used on her, we figured that out already. Though we’re not sure how long it’ll take because of how long she’s been tethered, it means that Eyebags can help her. It takes him some time, but he can do it. So, take a breath, she’s going to be okay.” whispered Katsuki softly, understanding in his voice as he turned and put his hand on Tamaki’s shoulder, squeezing it lightly in support and reassurance.

“I know, it just- it just sucks because she’s so young and to have something that important to her be used against her for the sake of villainy. It just breaks my heart, that’s all.” Tamaki was feeling a bit choked up, getting all teary-eyed as he looked at Katsuki.

Katsuki stepped in front of Tamaki and his gloved-hand came up to curl around the back of his head, and then he leaned Tamaki’s head down to press his forehead to his shoulder. His other arm looped around Tamaki’s waist, and Tamaki let himself melt into the embrace, letting his emotions run through him.

“It’s alright, it’s gonna be fine, everything’s going to be okay.” muttered Katsuki into his ear, warm breath ghosting over his ear as his warmth seeped into Tamaki’s body as he tried to calm his overwhelmed self down. “Just breathe, it’s going to be okay. I got you. I have you, it’s okay.”

“Sorry, I don’t know why I’m so overwhelmed with my emotions right now.” mumbled Tamaki into his shoulder before he forced himself to follow Katsuki’s breathing, relaxing more and more until he felt more centered. “Thank you, and I’m sorry.”

Tamaki pulled away, his cheeks burning red because Katsuki had not only reassured him but comforted him as well. But the proximity had Tamaki’s cheeks burning hotter than before, so he turned his head away from Katsuki’s view, tugging his hood up to hide as best he could.

“Don’t worry about it. This sucks, and you’re allowed to be overwhelmed. I’m sorry if I overstepped.” replied Katsuki quietly, almost subdued in a way that had Tamaki twisting to look at him again only to see that he was staring blankly through the one-way mirror.

“You didn’t overstep, Katsuki, you helped… You really helped, and I appreciate it.” explained Tamaki softly, trying to make sure Katsuki knew how much it meant to him that he cared enough to hold him while he was overwhelmed and emotional.

Tamaki reached out his hand, curling his fingers around Katsuki’s gloved hand and squeezing for a moment before the door opened.

*******

“-eater, Tamaki, hey, Tamaki, you okay?” Eijirou’s voice filters in and snaps him outta the memory, making Tamaki shake his head, indigo eyes meeting the light red eyes that are almost the shade he wishes to be staring into.

“Yeah, sorry, just lost in my thoughts. What’s up?” asks Tamaki with a light flush to his cheeks, feeling way too embarrassed that he got caught thinking about Katsuki, even if Eijirou doesn’t know that’s what he was doing.

“I was just asking if you wanted to go to the break room with me since Fat said he was ordering lunch for everyone. What were you thinkin’ about? A certain blasty-hands guy?” asks Eijirou teasingly as he nudges Tamaki in the side with his elbow.

“I’ll go with you to the break room, but leave me alone with my unrequited feelings, Rocky.” sighs Tamaki as he tugs his hood up to cover his face when he realizes that he didn’t deny it.

“Ha! Didn’t deny it, but seriously, Seashine, I keep telling you they’re not unrequited when my Blastybro feels the same.” replies Eijirou as he leads them up the stairs and into the break room in the hall just across from the stair landing.

“Whatever. Why is this light off?” asks Tamaki as he follows Eijirou into the dark room, his hand instinctively reaching out for the light switch.

As soon as he flicks it on, he jumps as several voices yell, “Happy Birthday Suneater!”

His eyes well up with tears as he sees Fatgum, Eijirou, Tetsu, Momo, Camie, and more wearing purple party hats with his face on them, balloons spelling out his hero name, and Fatgum is holding a red velvet chocolate cake. They’re all grinning, streamers decorating the ceilings and walls, and several presents are stacked on a table off to the left while an assortment of foods are on plates across a table on his right.

“Woah, you guys did all this for me?” asks Tamaki softly, surprised and happy as his eyes get a little misty at the gesture.

“Of course we did, my boy! You deserved a special moment to celebrate your birthday, and when you refused to take it off, we decided to have it here instead of at your favorite diner after work!” exclaims Fatgum happily as he hands Tamaki the cake that has his name written on it in chocolate icing along with a chocolate drawn butterfly.

“Thank you, guys this- thank you for this. It means the world to me that you did all this for me… And the cake! Red velvet is my favorite! Where’d you get this from?” asks Tamaki softly, happy as he takes the small square cake, a single serving, but he’s beyond happy about it.

“Happy Birthday, Tamaki, I have to run for my patrol, but my present is on the table!” says Momo happily as she gives him a quick hug before heading out of the break room.

“Happy Birthday man!” exclaims Tetsu loudly as he steps forward, clapping a hand on his back before heading for the food table.

“Happy Birthday, babe!” says Camie brightly, a little flirtatiously, unfortunately.

“Stop flirting with him. You have a boyfriend.” huffs Eijirou as he guides Tamaki towards a table and ensures Camie stays away from him.

“Thanks. I know she doesn’t mean it as more than just lighthearted flirting, but I keep telling her that it makes me uncomfortable. Eventually, she’ll listen… I hope.” murmurs Tamaki softly as Tetsu comes over with two plates, handing one to Eijirou before sitting on Tamaki’s other side with his own.

“Here ya go, my boy! I have a meeting, but enjoy your break and your meal, you’re on desk duty for an hour and a half after break though. Tetsu will handle the rest of your patrol with Eijirou.” says FatGum as he sets a plate down in front of Tamaki before he’s heading out of the room as well.

“Great, but he didn’t answer my question. Who made the cake?” asks Tamaki quietly as he sets the cake behind his plate of food.

“Oh, Katsuki made it!” says Eijirou after swallowing a bite of food, almost choking as he quickly did so because he needed to answer the question. “I’m good! I just- I had to tell you it was Katsuki because he literally made it after me telling him that I couldn’t get anyone to make it despite having two days to make a small red velvet cake. The bakeries I called were either too busy or simply didn’t sell Red Velvet desserts. It was frustrating, but he stayed up after his patrol yesterday to make it. I even had to message him when I got here with it before our patrol because he needed to ensure it stayed as perfect as it was when I left with it. He almost brought it in himself because he didn’t trust me.”

“That sounds like Bakugou, he’s a little bit of a prick, but hey, he’s a good guy too!” says Tetsu with an ugly snort before he takes another bite of his steak.

“I’ll have to figure out how to thank him somehow then.” murmurs Tamaki to himself as he starts digging into his Takoyaki.

Eijirou and Tetsu talk around him before eventually, he’s forced to open all of his presents. Then, before Tetsu and Eijirou leave for patrol, they help him cart all of his gifts, simple as they may be, to his car so that he won’t have to take them himself once he’s off.

“Have fun on the rest of your patrol!” calls Tamaki brightly as he waves at them, feeling light on his feet as he heads back into the agency and up the stairs to his desk.

Tamaki sits at his desk and starts working on his reports, mind running as his eyes flit over to the cake he’s eaten half of, and he pulls his phone back out of his pocket. Setting it on the desk, he sees there is still a lack of Katsuki in his notifications, but it should be his day off, and he made the cake… Tamaki needs to figure out how to repay him for his kindness.

He finishes working through his paperwork, then once he’s done, he has twenty minutes left on his shift. Tamaki picks his phone up, unlocks it, and moves to his messages. He’d pinned Katsuki’s messages within the last six months along the already pinned list including Eijirou, FatGum, Mirio, Nejire, and his parents.

He opens their messages, ignoring the orange heart next to the KitKat name as he starts typing.

Tamaki: Thank you for the cake, it was really good!

KitKat 🧡: Glad you enjoyed it. Happy birthday, Tamaki.

Tamaki can feel his cheeks heating up because this was what he was waiting for.

Tamaki: Thank you! Is there any way I can repay you for making the cake?

KitKat 🧡: Don’t need to fuckin’ repay me. It’s your fuckin’ birthday.

Tamaki: Yeah, I know that, but you did something really sweet… Lemme do something nice in return!

Tamaki: Can I bring you dinner? You like Spicy Mapo Tofu, right?

KitKat 🧡: …fine…yes… but I’m not fuckin’ happy about it.

Tamaki: I get off in like ten minutes, I got put on desk duty and given an hour and a half before I was off because Fat said so. Have you eaten?

KitKat 🧡: Good, you should’ve taken the damn day off. I know you’re doing a whole day of stuff tomorrow since it’s your actual day off, but still.

KitKat 🧡: Haven’t eaten since noon, if you wanna bring it now, you can, but you don’t have to.

Tamaki: See you in half an hour or so!

Tamaki grins brightly down at the screen, before standing and heading to the locker room to change out of his costume. He decides to take a quick shower, then he’s changing into his black joggers and a plain purple tee as the door to the locker room opens up.

“Such a good patrol today man!” exclaims Eijirou brightly. “Oh, Tamaki, you already heading out?”

“It was, and getting to do the last couple hours with you was a blast!” adds Tetsu just as brightly. “Happy Birthday again, Tamaki!”

“Yeah, I am, and thanks Tetsu. Are you still going on that date tonight with Shouto, Riot?” asks Tamaki a bit teasingly as he waves to both of them.

“Yeah, Midobro is gonna drop him off soon so we can go from here. Apparently, he’s meeting with Mirio for a dinner date too! Thanks for reminding me, I gotta hurry and shower!” exclaims Eijirou in a panic as he grabs his stuff and rushes to the showers, jumping around Tetsu.

“Good luck!” calls Tamaki with a snort before he grabs his duffel bag and closes his locker door.

“You did that on purpose.” chuckles Tetsu as he grabs his own shower bag.

“He teased me about Katsuki, so I teased him about Shouto. It’s a fair trade all things considered.” replies Tamaki with a shrug before he heads for the door, calling over his shoulder. “Aren't Denki and Kendo coming to get you for your anniversary dinner soon?”

“Shit!”

The door closes behind him on Tetsu’s yelp of panic, and Tamaki chuckles to himself as he heads for the stairs, duffel bag hanging loosely by his side.

As soon as he’s downstairs, he heads straight for the side door to go out to the parking lot. It doesn’t take him long to find his old beat-up blue truck, and then he’s unlocking it with his remote and climbing in, tossing his duffel into the passenger seat. He uses his phone to call in his order at the diner, gets his truck started, and gets himself on his way.

He’s in and out of the diner as soon as he gets there, it takes less than ten minutes to get the food, check the food, and get himself back in his truck after leaving a hefty tip for his favorite people. He’s a little behind on the half hour plan to get to Katsuki’s apartment, but at least he’s only a block away. He checks his phone real quick as he waits for the Camry to move from behind him.

KitKat 🧡: Let me know when you get here, and I’ll come out to get it. Park out front, it’s clear.

That came five minutes ago. Tamaki pouts a little bit because he at least was hoping he could see Katsuki from outside his truck, but rolling the window down and talking to him will work too. The Camry finally moves, and Tamaki gets himself out of the diner’s parking lot and heads for Katsuki.

Parking in front of the large, gated apartment, he pulls his phone out again to actually message Katsuki back.

Tamaki: I’m here!

He settles in his seat, leaving the doors locked but the passenger window is slightly cracked open as he pulls up his trusted news sites and starts scrolling to check out what he missed for the last part of his patrol.

“Unlock the door, Maki.” huffs Katsuki, startling Tamaki out of his reading of the lobster clawed villain that Mirio had to take on earlier.

“Shoot, sorry I was catching up on hero news.” replies Tamaki as he quickly unlocks the truck door, dropping his phone into his lap.

“You’re fine, I just got out here. I didn’t even try the door, to be fuckin’ honest, I just figured you locked it because I do.” snorts Katsuki as he tugs the door open and steps forward. “How’d the little surprise party at the agency go?”

“It went well, all my presents are carefully tucked in my truck bed, so I’m gonna have fun carrying them up to my apartment.” replies Tamaki softly, happiness filling his chest because that was so nice and fun. “The good thing is that it’s mostly cards and like four actual presents, the bad thing is Camie must’ve spritzed her card with perfume because I was choking when I was going through them and got to hers. I’m fairly certain I’ll have to plug my nose when dealing with them later.”

“She’s annoying like that, I’ll talk to her about it though because she’s got a boyfriend. She shouldn’t be buggin’ you when she’s already got some dumbass to call hers.” huffs Katsuki with an eye roll as he reaches out his hand to grab the take-out bag. “You got Nina’s? That’s my favorite spot for Mapo Tofu.”

“It’s mostly harmless. The only problem I have is that I’ve told her before that it’s uncomfortable for me because I don’t swing that way. Eijirou and Tetsu saved me from her though, so it’s just the perfume that I’ll have to deal with when I get home.” replies Tamaki easily with a shrug as he twists to look at Katsuki. “Yep, that’s my favorite place!”

“Well, at least they saved you from her then. For the perfume, just spritz something you like above the card or the bag or box, whatever it’s in and let it sit. It should, once it airs and takes in the new smell, become bearable enough to take out. But if it’s not got anything in it, which it probably doesn’t since it’s Camie, you can just throw it away.” says Katsuki roughly as he tugs the bag towards him, not actually lifting it up as he meets Tamaki’s eyes with those deep red eyes that sends butterflies fluttering through his stomach. It takes Tamaki a moment to process what he said as he pulls himself away from those mesmerizing eyes, but then he’s looking almost offended on Camie’s behalf so Katsuki snorts before explaining himself. “She won’t care, she just grabs whatever card she can find when she realizes she needs to get a gift. Unless you're a girl, you just get a random chosen card and perfume drenched envelope. I told her straight up that I threw her shit away because the perfume she used was nauseating, and she told me she didn’t care because she just grabbed a random card that fit the celebration.”

“Oh, so she really just doesn’t care. Well, then I might just toss it because it’s kind of a bit much. I might have to look through the cards and see if the smell has permeated through their envelopes though.” murmurs Tamaki softly, understanding coloring his tone as he looks out the windshield for a moment before turning back to Katsuki. “I should let you get back up to your apartment, huh? Sorry, I didn’t mean to talk your ear off like this.”

“Not a big fuckin’ deal, not like I don’t like talking to you or somethin’. But you should probably get home and chill out since you have stuff to do tomorrow to celebrate your birthday with your family and friends.” replies Katsuki with a half-shrug, his sweatshirt shifting to the side to show a bit of his collarbone, pulling Tamaki’s attention down to the sweatshirt.

He takes him in for a moment, his jaw dropping because Katsuki is wearing a black and purple Suneater sweatshirt with the matching dark purple Suneater joggers.

“I didn’t know you bought my merch.” says Tamaki in awe as he lifts his eyes to meet Katsuki’s ruby eyes, watching the way his cheeks start to turn pink. “Don’t be embarrassed, please, it- I- it looks really good on you! I’m- I’m just- I’m flattered that you wear my merch, I was just surprised because I didn’t know you bought it.”

“I do buy it, but this set came from Shitty Hair and IcyHot for Christmas. They went in together to give me separate presents because Shitty Hair got me for our friend squad’s Secret Santa, and IcyHot got me for our class’ Secret Santa. Your merch is fuckin’ good, so of course I buy it.” Katsuki’s grumbling, embarrassed as he averts his eyes to stare down at the bag of food, tips of his ears burning a brighter red than the pink Tamaki caught on his cheeks.

“It means a lot that you like my merch enough to wear it at all, let alone when you’re being comfortable at home. Sorry, I didn’t mean to catch you off guard or point it out. I was just surprised, but I’m glad that you like it. That’s probably my favorite design for my loungewear, I got ‘em in all the offered colors.” says Tamaki softly as he looks at Katsuki, smiling reassuringly when those ruby eyes look back at him before sighing as his own cheeks heat up as he gives his own confession. “Besides, I buy and wear your merch too… Also, Mirio and Eijirou bought me some of your merch for Christmas for the Secret Santa’s too.”

“Woah, you wear my merch? Why haven’t I ever seen you in my shit? You probably look so fuckin’ adorable in Dynamight merch, holy hell.” Katsuki is muttering to himself, voice filled with surprise and his eyes blown wide before he looks from Tamaki to his own hands. He seems to collect himself before looking up a bit blankly with a half-smirk. “Course you wear my merch, it’s the fuckin’ best and super comfortable. I only design the best shit, and my parents only make the best shit.”

“You’re really cocky for someone who seemed almost in awe of the fact that I wear your merch. You even called me adorable in that muttering, Katsuki.” teases Tamaki softly, gentle as he smiles innocently when Katsuki’s eyes narrow at him, but then he’s fiddling with his sweatshirt sleeve and looking down at his lap. “Though, to be fair, I was in awe when I realized you were wearing my merch, let alone when you said you have other pieces of my merch.”

There’s a sharp inhale before a soft chuckle, and then Katsuki says, “It’s not like I say shit I don’t mean, and I’m pretty damn certain that you’re adorable in my merch because you’re always adorable.”

Tamaki can feel the heat rush into his cheeks as he looks up at Katsuki in surprise, the direct complement catching him off guard more than the muttering did, but Katsuki arches a brow, daring him to argue.

“I’m not going to argue, I just- you- I- that wasn’t what I was expecting.” huffs Tamaki with a slight pout as he turns to stare out the window again.

“Should’ve expected it when you called me out, sweetheart.” replies Katsuki amusedly, the sound of the bag crinkling pulling Tamaki’s attention almost as fast as the pet-name. But Katsuki lets his dropped jaw go as he continues with a soft voice after rolling the window down and shutting the passenger door. “I’m gonna head in, so you can get home and decompress, but I hope your birthday has been good so far. I also hope tomorrow goes as wonderfully as you fuckin’ deserve, and I’ll see you when I steal Eiji for patrols in a couple days. We’re finally about to be on our regular fuckin’ schedule again, thank fuck.”

“Oh, that’s cool then. I’ll be able to patrol some more with Mirio, and actually hear about his dates with Izuku in person instead of the text updates that I get when he’s able to message since he was running overnight patrols.” says Tamaki quietly, thoughtful as he thinks of how his schedule is going to change yet again, though he’s thankful he gets a day before he has to deal with it. That extra day should make adjusting his sleep schedule easier since the next day he’s on call. “Alright, I’ll stop talking your ear off. Thank you again for the cake, KitKat, I’ll see you later.”

Katsuki just waves in response and heads back through the gate as Tamaki rolls up the window, but then Tamaki sees him stop just inside the closing gate and it hits him.

He just called Katsuki by the nickname he’s been calling him in his head.

Tamaki just called him KitKat instead of Katsuki.

In his panic, he quickly pulls away and gets on the road as he sees Katsuki turning to look at him. His apartment is only twenty minutes past Katsuki’s, but it’s twenty minutes of him panicking because he just slipped up. He slipped up a few times, but at least the merch stuff can be considered friendly. Although Katsuki called him sweetheart, which has Tamaki curious about whether he’s alone in his crush. He’s been ignoring his phone the entire drive, and furthers his ignoring by shoving his phone into his duffel bag before carrying it inside his apartment building once he’s parked his car in the parking lot behind his building. He takes the fifteen minutes it takes to cart everything into his apartment and put it away in his office, then he’s slipping into his slippers and flopping across his plush purple chair.

“God, I couldn’t be more of a mess if I tried, I swear.” mutters Tamaki as he stares at his ceiling, purposely ignoring the duffel bag sitting by his door with his phone tossed inside the side pocket.

He tosses his head back and groans when his phone starts ringing with Eijirou’s ringtone, but he gets up and walks over to the duffel, crouching down to pull out his phone.

He stares at Eijirou’s name for a moment before answering the call and putting the phone up against his ear, “I thought you were on your date?”

“He is, but you wouldn’t answer me. So, I tracked their asses down and stole his phone.”

Tamaki’s eyes close and he brings his hand up to pinch the bridge of his nose.

“You interrupted their date to call me?”

“Yes, I did. You ignored me all because you called me… what you called me. But I called you sweetheart, and you bypassed it.”

“You calling me sweetheart isn’t- I mean, listen I short-circuited, but that’s just- something that people say. Old ladies call me sweetheart all the time when I help them while on patrols. Me calling you- Me- Mine was- that- yeah-”

“Yours was a nickname, mine was a pet-name, but you’re not wrong about old ladies using it all the time. Do I need to figure out something else for you then? I’m sure I could.”

“Wait, wait, wait, wait…. You- you don’t have to, like, force yourself to call me a pet-name, and I’ve been calling you KitKat since before your number was in my phone. That’s actually what your contact is under, so it’s not just a nickname.”

Tamaki hears a sharp inhale of breath before what sounds like Katsuki’s quirk popping off, and then muffled curses.

“Sorry, bro, Sho just had to freeze Katsuki’s hands to calm him down. I’ll have him call you back on his own phone once he’s safely away from other people, so that when you say whatever it is you said that had his hands exploding won’t affect the public.”

“Oh god, I’m sorry. Tell him he doesn’t have to call me back, and I am so sorry. I- I’m so sorry! Bye!”

Tamaki hangs up, not even noticing that Eijirou was still talking, his mind gets overwhelmed with panicked overthinking. He’d caused Katsuki to lose control of his quirk in public. He’d made him so uncomfortable that he lost control. He screwed up again.

“No, no, no, no. Don’t.” says Tamaki aloud as he drops his phone and goes to the bathroom, immediately turning the water on and dipping his hands into the water. He splashes water against his face a couple times before shutting the water off and breathing heavily as he grabs his hand towel and pats his face dry. “I didn’t do anything wrong or overstep, it was an accident, and that’s okay. I didn’t screw up, I didn’t know that would happen, and I didn’t purposefully try to cause Katsuki to lose control of his quirk. And Katsuki didn’t lose control of his quirk purposefully either, he may have been flustered, and that would be on me. It’s okay, I didn’t screw up, it’s okay.”

Tamaki takes a deep breath, repeating that final sentence to himself as he looks at himself in the mirror, but then his phone starts ringing again from the living room and has him rushing out of the bathroom to grab it before the call attempt ends. He picks up the call without looking at his phone.

“Hi, sorry, I was out of the room, but hi!”

“Oh good, I was about to tell Shitty hair to give me your fuckin’ address.”

“Oh… Katsuki… Hi…”

Tamaki winces at his own trembling voice, frustrated with his own anxiety and uncertainty.

“Yeah, hi doll, anyways, don’t blame yourself for-”

Tamaki blanks after the petname processes, his cheeks start heating up, and he can no longer hear Katsuki on the other end of the call.

“Shit! Hold on Kats!”

Tamaki snaps back as a tentacle sweeps a picture frame off the shelf, snapping him out of his daze.

He’d sprouted several tentacles, and one of them stole his phone. He takes a deep breath, pulling his quirk back, and carefully catches his phone when it drops from close to the ceiling. He’s panting a little bit because that was hard to fix, but then he puts the phone to his ear, after making sure Katsuki was still on the call.

“Are you okay? Dammit, shitty hair tell me where-”

“I’m okay! I’m okay! Promise, I- You- and then I- my quirk acted up.”

“Ohh, so you got short-circuited too then? So, that’s what I should call you, huh? I rather like that one, so that sounds perfect.”

“That- you- Okay, why are you trying to decide on pet-names or- what is happening right now?”

“Well, see, I was going to wait. The plan was to wait until Tuesday, but I jumped the gun as is typical because I do that.”

“Plan for what?”

“To ask if you want to get lunch or dinner the next chance we can now that the villain mess is handled.”

“You- wait- hold on- huh? You want to get a meal together?”

“I want to go on a date with you, but sure, get a meal together works as long as you know it’s a damn date.”

“WHAT?!” Tamaki is screeching, then he pulls the phone away and double checks that he’s not losing his mind before putting it right back to his ear and breathing calmly. “Okay, that was not a disgusted or unhappy what… I- I never- you- that- I’m surprised and confused, but not mad or upset or disgusted. Ridiculously happy and interested but confused.”

“You, me, a date whether it has to happen during patrols where we sneak around to make it happen to have privacy until we’re ready, or on a day off, I can request a specific day if you tell me one. I have feelings for you, have had them for a while now, and would like to take you out on a date. But I won’t push that shit on you, if you’re not interested in it, and don’t push yourself to say yes either.”

“It wouldn’t be pushing when I have feelings for you too and have been trying to gather the courage to ask you out for like three months now. I am just shocked that you have any romantic feelings for me, I always figured you’d be interested in someone more outgoing, or even like I dunno, more straight forward? You know your friends wanted you to get with Shinsou, right?”

“Yeah, I know, but they’re dumb as fuck for that shit. Both of us have said as much on several occasions. Especially because Hitoshi is dating Monoma and proposed to him, which is why they’ve stopped saying that recently because those two dumbasses are planning their wedding. So, if you have feelings for me too, can we agree to go on a date within the next week or two depending on when we can get the same fuckin’ day off?”

“We absolutely can, and I should get my schedule tomorrow, so I can text it to you to see what the plan is since Fat is giving us our schedule for the next two weeks instead of just one week. I do know that I should be on call on Thursday and off on either Monday or Wednesday. He usually gives me the day off on one of his meeting days because he’s been helping Momo and Camie and Tetsu and Eijirou build their hero duo's reputation up with the public. I can confirm with you as soon as I know exactly when I’m off instead of on call.”

“Sounds perfect, and I’ll get my two-week schedule too because Jeanist has decided to do every two weeks for our work schedule now since everyone else was. The dumbass did the one-week schedules because “you can’t plan for quirk accidents and injuries, Katsuki.” but with this whole thing with the villain mess, he took on the two-week schedule and is sticking with it. So, I’ll await your message so that I can start planning our first date for our day off.”

“Yeah, Fat had that when I was interning, but then I think he talked to someone and changed up the schedule planning because it made sense to plan out for two weeks to be able to know who could be swapped if anything were to go wrong on a shift.”

“Sounds about right and really fucking smart actually. But I’m going to let you go because you deserve to decompress and relax since you’re going to be really busy tomorrow. Talk to you later, doll.”

“Okay, KitKat, talk to you later.”

Click.

Tamaki drops into his chair, phone falling onto his chest, and he covers his face, feeling like a tomato with how hot his face feels, hotter against his hands than the initial feeling was. He’s going to go on a date with Katsuki on their next shared day off, and he’s ecstatic.

This is probably the best birthday Tamaki’s had in a long, long time, and it’s thanks to Katsuki Bakugou and his friends.
