"Unnie, I'm going on the ferris wheel with Dongie!" Gahyeon yells into the ears of her older sister, Minji, trying to overpower the music and the loud noises of the carnival.
"Okay, but text me if you need me and don't go anywhere else without telling me!" Minji yells back as softly as she can manage, patting the head of her younger sister.
She smiles one last time at the older, doing a 180 to face Handong who is waiting behind her. Her breath gets caught up in her throat as soon as she lays an eye on the brunette. The pink and purple lights that fill up the carnival light Handong's face so delicately, Gahyeon needs to take a deep breath to be able to take in the beauty that is standing in front of her with a smile that shines brighter than the sun.
"Let's go Gahyeon-ah, I don't want to miss the fireworks!" Handong snaps her out of her staring with a honey oozing giggle, and reaches for her hand.
They start walking hand in hand, a very common thing for high school best friends to do, except Gahyeon doesn't really think of Handong as her best friend. She's been in love with her for God knows how long now, but she never dared to act on it. How could she, when Handong is an angel, a Goddess in disguise, the kindest, sweetest and most caring person she ever had the pleasure of knowing.
So she just tries to push aside the butterflies going wild in her stomach when Handong pulls her closer due to the huge crowd, to make sure she doesn't lose the smaller girl.
"If we are lucky we will be on the wheel when the fireworks go off!" Handong clings onto her arm and shakes it with excitement, her face ever so bright from happiness.
"That'd be so cooooool." Gahyeon matches the excitement, but deep down she hopes Handong knows she wouldn't be this excited with anyone else but her.
She prepares her little tickets, telling Handong she will be paying for the ride. Technically it's Minji's money but Handong doesn't have to know that.
They spot their friends, Yubin and Yoohyeon standing in line for the carousel, and they laugh when the little children get intimidated by Yubin dressed in all black, with subtle clown makeup on her face.
"Why did she come looking like that?" Gahyeon is still trying to catch her breath, as she gives the tickets to the guy.
"She looks so funny." Handong giggles with her and takes a mental note to look for the pair later so that all four of them can grab something to eat together.
They get settled in the little capsule, waiting patiently for others to get in too.
"You're not afraid of heights, are you?" Handong asks as she puts a comforting hand on her bare knee, which sends electric shocks through Gahyeon's body. She just shakes her head, unable to speak currently. She hates how much she reacts to every little thing Handong does, making her urge almost irresistible to confess. Of course she doesn't.
She's very thankful for the ferris wheel that starts going upwards slowly, making both of them look out to the colorful carnival lit by pretty lights, filled with music and laughter. The noise gets more quiet once they are nearing the top, a comfortable silence settling between them.
"Look! The moon is so pretty!" Handong points excitedly, there is no such thing as a quiet moment with this girl, but Gahyeon doesn't mind it at all.
She loves Handong the way she is, the positive, alway bright, shining, caring, loving and wonderful Handong.
It hits her as a ton of bricks. She loves Handong. She just sits there and admires Handong's facial features as she stares at the moon, trying to cherish this moment in case the magic bubble around them disappears faster than she wants it to.
"You're not looking at the moon!" Handong suddenly turns her head, locking eyes with Gahyeon, who looks like a deer caught in headlights, a blush coming to her cheeks, reaching her ears as well.
But before Gahyeon could say anything, the ferris wheel stops with a loud screech, making both of the girls cover their ears.
They are at the very top, and the ferris wheel came to a halt. Just fucking great, Gahyeon thinks, because she's now panicked. Handong is looking around and leans out a bit to see the bottom of the wheel, but her eyes never once stop shining.
"Gahyeon-ah, I think there is something wrong with the wheel." she giggles with a slight excitement in her voice, almost like she was happy to be stuck here.
The music suddenly stops and a male voice takes over the speaker, saying that there are technical problems with the wheel, but they are working on it and it will be fixed as soon as possible.
"Hey!" Handong pushes Gahyeon's shoulder lightly with her own. "At least we can see the fireworks from here!"
Gahyeon is amazed, how the brunette can find the positive side of everything and she relaxes a bit because being up here in this slightly cold summer night with the one and only Handong doesn't seem so bad at all.
"Yeah," she says with a sigh, one that catches Handong's attention and she starts staring at Gahyeon with knitted brows.
"Is everything alright?" Handong is concerned, Gahyeon can hear that and the look on her face makes it impossibly hard for Gahyeon to not grab her face and tell her how cute she is as she showers her with kisses.
"Yes," she smiles and turns her head at the moon instead, not being able to maintain eye contact with Handong. "You're here with me so,"
She adds quietly and Handong wouldn't be able to catch it if she wasn't paying all of her attention to the smaller girl. She doesn't even know how many times she wished Gahyeon would look at her the same way she looks at the smaller girl.
Every little thing Gahyeon does makes her heart ignite with love, and even just the thought of Gahyeon being hers makes the butterflies go crazy in her stomach.
She is short of breath now, switching roles as she stares at Gahyeon who is looking at the full moon.
"Now you're the one not looking at the moon." Gahyeon points out with a giggle, trying to hide how nervous it makes her that Handong is not taking her eyes off of her.
"You're much prettier." Handong blurts out, biting her bottom lip shyly when Gahyeon blushes after hearing those words.
"The moon reminds me of you," Gahyeon mindlessly says, kicking her feet playfully before she shifts her gaze to Handong. "I always look at it when I miss you."
They stare at each other for a while, the music coming for the carnival completely drowned out by the sound of their heartbeats.
That's when Gahyeon hears that familiar squeak, and the loud boom, Handong unconsciously jumps closer to her as the loud noise of the firework startles her a bit.
Gahyeon leans her head on Handong's shoulder, enjoying the beautiful show painted on the sky above them. She feels soft lips press a delicate kiss, full of love on her temple and she can't help but turn her head slowly, finding Handong looking at her instead of the fireworks.
"Why are you...?" She tries to ask but her breath gets caught up in her throat when Handong inches closer to her.
"Would it be really clishé if..." Handong whispers but she trails off with a small smile, instead kissing Gahyeon softly on her lips.
Gahyeon swears she is soaring, fireworks going off in her chest as well, as she feels like they are on that magic carpet ride from Aladdin. She cups Handong's jaw with her tiny hands, she wants her to stay longer, but they both start smiling so widely the kiss breaks.
"If you did this?" Gahyeon finishes her question, whispering on Handong's lips. "Kinda. But it's you, so,"
She doesn't have time to finish her sentence, Handong catches her off guard with another kiss, this one is more brave as she places her delicate hands on Gahyeon's cheeks, her thumb caressing her jawline.
"I hope it's gonna take them a long time to fix this wheel." Gahyeon mumbles between sweet, loving kisses, and she couldn't be happier to be here, under the full moon with her sunshine.
