Chapter 1: How to handle a breakup (guide by KSN and YJW)

Chapter Text

“So you’re…breaking up with me…?” Sunoo hesitantly asked, face drained of any color. Sure, he was already naturally a pretty pale person, but right now, he seemed as if he had seen a ghost. His mouth opened and closed as he tried to find the right words to say in this situation, but nothing really came to mind.

Sunghoon, his boyfriend of two years, was now breaking up with him…?

It just didn’t make any sense…this must’ve been a prank right? Maybe Sunghoon and Jake had come up with this to see Sunoo’s reaction to make fun of it later on. Right, that must be it!

But Sunoo had to admit, if this was really a prank, then Sunghoon was an extraordinary actor. The way the older towered over him, rigid and motionless- and even his countenance did not betray a single emotion. He simply stared at Sunoo, who was seemingly going through the five stages of grief all in the span of a single minute -

Sunghoon was breaking up with him…?

Sunoo’s heart dropped and he felt his eyes sting with tears as the realization dawned upon him, that yes, Sunghoon was breaking up with him, and no, this was not a joke.

What did this mean? What did this mean for them? Was all the time they had spent together and the memories they had created with each other good for nothing? Did it all amount to nothing, now that they were no longer a couple?

Sunoo had so many questions- what made Sunghoon propose this break up on a random Friday morning, right before the semester was over and their summer break started? What did Sunoo do? Did Sunghoon feel neglected in their relationship? Did Sunoo not spend enough time with him? Or- or had he found someone else?

Sunoo stared at his feet with watery eyes, feeling burning-hot frustration crawl up his spine.

How dare Sunghoon break up with him out of the blue and expect him to accept it without any explanation?

He looked up at his now ex-boyfriend, seeing the same impassive expression he’d been sporting since the beginning of this whole ordeal.
Oh, how much he hated this about Sunghoon. While he felt too much of everything- sadness, anger, happiness, Sunghoon always seemed to feel so little. It had always bugged him that they were never on the same wavelength when it came to matters of the heart.

Sunoo cried easily and was easily overwhelmed. Be it in melancholy or merriment. He wore his heart on his sleeves and always gave away a bit too much of himself. You could always tell what and how he felt, and if you couldn’t he wouldn’t shy away from expressing exactly what it was.

He was emotionally competent like that.

Sunghoon was the opposite- he was an enigma to Sunoo and it had taken him years of friendship and months of dating to even get a basic understanding of how the older’s complex mind worked. Every time Sunoo thought he had reached a new milestone, Sunghoon would always close up and withdraw anew.

They had always run in circles like that. But Sunoo had found solace in it and he thought Sunghoon had too.

So sue him, but he didn’t understand why his boyfriend was breaking up with him.

“Why?” He asked as a single tear escaped his eye. He was quick to wipe it away, so as to not let it stray too far. Of all the uncountable questions that were running through his mind, he chose the shortest, but arguably also the most important.

Sunghoon clicked his tongue and sighed, driving a hand through his hair. “Sunoo, just- I’m unable to do this right now, okay? Let’s go separate ways from now on.” he sounded exhausted and annoyed, and Sunoo couldn’t understand what he had done for Sunghoon to sound like this.

Last night, they had still Facetimed until three am, both of them unwilling to hang up and unwilling to admit who it was that loved the other more. Jungwon had called it their cheesy couple shit, but it had made Sunoo blush so prettily, so who was he to complain? This Sunghoon was nothing like the boy he had known for almost three years now and dated for more than half of the time.

“Wh- what…but- hyung, why? What did I do?” He exasperatedly asked, and his voice cracked against his will. He could feel it, his emotions were quickly building up inside him and were about to spill.

Sunghoon only shook his head, looking to the side. Oh, so he couldn’t even hold eye contact anymore. Also that entire ‘let’s go separate ways’ bullshit was upsetting Sunoo even further- they had the same friend group for fucks sake! Even before they dated they saw each other every single day, and that sure as hell wouldn’t change now, just because Sunghoon was breaking up with him like a coward.

“Nothing, just- just leave me alone.” Sunghoon let out another sigh as if being in Sunoo’s presence alone was the hardest task ever.

If Sunoo’s heart hadn’t already been broken before, it sure as hell would’ve been broken now.

He felt ashamed. So, so ashamed. He felt sad, an overwhelming amount of sadness too. He was also angry- angry at himself but even more angry at Sunghoon.
And most of all, he was confused. So utterly lost and confused- it felt as if his brain was lagging in real time, unable to comprehend what was going on.

Sunoo nodded. “Okay,” he whispered. If Sunghoon wanted to be left alone, then so be it.

He closed his locker because Sunghoon had decided to break up with him in university of all places, shouldered his bag, and turned around.

This was it, he thought as he walked out of the building. Sunghoon did not run after him, did not call after him, did not even look in his direction anymore. This was it. Two years of precious memories had ended, just like that and Sunoo could do nothing to stop it.

Now that he was not in Sunghoon’s vicinity anymore, he felt his lips quiver and his eyes spill tears at a rapid pace. He was gonna break down. He knew he was. He needed- he needed Jungwon.

At least Sunghoon decided to call it quits on their last day of uni, so now he could wallow in self-pity for weeks and months on end and no one would bat an eye. He could spend his days wrapped up in cozy blankets, eating buckets of mint chocolate ice cream while crying his heart out and no one could fault him.

Sunoo scoffed. Men ain’t shit.

He angrily wiped at his tears as he took out his phone, speed dialing Jungwon’s number. He didn’t care where Jungwon was or what he was doing right now, all he knew was that he needed his best friend. He needed his other half.

He held the phone against his ear, impatiently listening to the beep sounds as he waited for Jungwon to pick up the call. It took Jungwon three rings to do that.

“Hello? Sunoo hyung? What’s up? You know I had fewer classes than you today so I already went home and I’m preparing something nice for us to eat~ You can guess what it is! But- wait, are you already on your way home? I thought I still had…Sunoo..? Hyung?”

Sunoo listened to Jungwon’s rant with a heavy heart. He opened his mouth to say something, say anything, but all that came out was a choked sob. He wanted to let Jungwon know that he appreciated him, that he couldn’t wait to reach home, and that he needed a hug. Really badly too.

But his eyes started leaking tears like a broken faucet, words were suddenly really hard to formulate and he could only start crying, standing right in the middle of campus. People started whispering and giving him weird looks, but he didn’t even notice.

He wept into the phone’s mic, hands shaking as the gravity and severity of the entire situation crashed down on him.

Sunghoon had really, honestly, seriously, and irreversibly broken up with him.

“Hyung??? oh my god- hyung? Sunoo hyung.. what happened?” Jungwon asked, voice laced with worry. Something fell to the floor in the background, and Sunoo held back another sob.

“Jungwonie…” He whimpered, feeling so incredibly hurt by everything.

“Hyung… what’s wrong? Are you hurt? Do you need me to come get you?”

Sunoo shook his head, not that Jungwon could see. “He- he broke up with me, Jungwonie,” he whispered, and all movement stopped.

“What?” Jungwon asked, halting in his steps. He had started putting on his shoes when Sunoo dropped the bomb just like that.

Sunoo sobbed and nodded. “Su-sunghoon hyung…he…he broke up with me, Wonie…”

Jungwon’s jaw dropped in shock- out of all the things he expected to hear from Sunoo, this was undeniably the last thing on his list. Sunghoon had broken up with Sunoo..? What? Why? Jungwon had so many questions, but he knew Sunoo had them too. And what Sunoo needed right now was not for Jungwon to ask more unnecessary questions, but to be there for him and support him.

“Oh, fuck..” Jungwon cursed out before he continued putting on his outerwear. “Hyung, where are you right now? Do you think you can make it home or do you want me to fetch you?” Jungwon sounded breathless, as he was gathering all his things to leave quickly.

Sunoo sniffed, having started to calm down a bit more, now that he was talking to Jungwon. He only needed his best friend. “Campus.” He croaked, voice rough from crying.

Jungwon nodded. “Alright. I’ll be there in three minutes. Stay on call with me, hm?” He spoke as he closed their apartment’s door behind him. He was basically fluent in Sunoo by now. Sunoo didn’t need to explicitly say it, and he would still understand his presence was all Sunoo needed right now.

Another day he was thanking the heavens for placing their apartment in walking distance from their university’s campus.

Sunoo nodded and sniffed. It’s not like he planned to hang up anyway.

Jungwon on the other hand ran down the stairs, too impatient to wait for the elevator, and left their apartment complex. He crossed the street and speed-walked to their university, all that while telling Sunoo that he was going to be there soon.

A short while later he could see their university’s entrance from afar, and he sped up even more, wanting to be with Sunoo as fast as he could.

“I can see you, Wonie.” Sunoo suddenly spoke up, and Jungwon looked around, trying to find Sunoo.

“Where are you? Oh!” Jungwon saw a lone figure standing in the middle of campus, waving at him. The younger went ahead and cut the call before running the last few meters to Sunoo.

Upon coming closer, Jungwon could tell Sunoo looked rough. His entire face was blotchy and red, presumably from crying so much, and his lithe frame was shaking. His eyes looked so deeply upset and tired that it made Jungwon’s own stomach turn a bit.

Park Sunghoon, that motherfucker.

Jungwon opened his arms widely and it didn’t even take half a minute for Sunoo to leap into the hug. Jungwon was really his other half.

The younger wrapped his hyung into a tight embrace, hoping to convey everything he couldn’t say through the hug, and Sunoo snuggled deeply into the familiar arms, appreciating Jungwon like no one else.

“It’s gonna be okay, hm?” Jungwon cooed, and Sunoo nodded, heart still heavy. He couldn’t believe it. It just didn’t make sense.

“And remember, it’s his loss, okay? Last time I checked, you’re the bad bitch, not him.”

Sunoo snorted, lightly pushing Jungwon by the shoulder. Jungwon somehow always knew what to say and how to act to make him feel better.
The two stayed wrapped up in their hug for a while longer, neither of them caring about the looks they were receiving from other people, Jungwon even going so far as to send glares to those who stared for a bit too long.

“What do you wanna do today, hyungie?” Jungwon asked.

“Hm.” Sunoo thought about it, playing with the hem of Jungwon’s jacket. “I wanna buy mintcho ice cream. And other snacks. And I wanna watch Disney movies.”

“Frozen again?”

“Yes. Both movies.”

Jungwon pressed his lips into a thin line, silently accepting it. He couldn’t stand those movies anymore, and he feared that he’d start hearing voices if he watched any of those movies one more time. But maybe today wasn’t the best day to start arguing with Sunoo about this.

“Fine. Let’s get some shopping done, sunshine.” Jungwon offered, before letting go of Sunoo and intertwining their hands. Sunoo sniffed and nodded, already feeling so loved. It still hurt, so badly. But as long as Jungwon wouldn’t ditch him and cut off him off, everything would be fine.

The two walked out of their university’s campus and down the streets in comfortable silence, both of them occupied with their own thoughts.
Sunoo was still asking himself how things had turned sour so fast and suddenly, he didn’t understand why Sunghoon had decided to break up with him. They could’ve talked it out, right…?

Unless Sunghoon secretly had been hating his guts the entire time and had only been putting up an act all during their relationship…

Jungwon kept stealing glances at Sunoo from time to time again, trying to gauge the other’s mood. He knew of Sunoo’s mood swings better than anyone. One second the boy felt overwhelming sadness and the next minute that sadness turned into furious anger, only to turn into an existential crisis right after.
Sunoo was busy tearing off the layer of skin on his lips while sunken in thought.

Jungwon decided to not say anything and instead continued leading Sunoo to the convenience store closest to their shared apartment.

Thinking of how the dynamic in their friend group would change from now on was starting to give Jungwon a headache- why did Sunghoon decide to break up with Sunoo out of all things? It was undeniable that the six of them were a tight-knit knitted friendgroup that had its origin in the early days of university for the oldest members.

He wouldn’t admit it to anyone, but this is exactly why he was scared of confessing to Jay Hyung.

They were friends before they were anything else and if they ever ended up going out with each other and breaking up (which wasn’t such a hypothetical situation anymore, since this is exactly what happened between Sunoo and Sunghoon), they would ruin more than just the relationship between each other.

They would strain the relationship of the entire group, and no matter how hard they tried to act like nothing was going on, things would simply become awkward.

“We’re here,” Jungwon announced, seeing as Sunoo was still in his own little world.

And while Jungwon knew all that in theory, the reality of the situation was that his longest and best friend was currently going through a breakup and it was his responsibility to be there for him.

He grabbed a basket with his free hand and pulled Sunoo along the aisles with the other. “What’s speaking to you? What do you want?” He asked, and Sunoo blinked for a few seconds.

“Anything mintcho. Mint chip cookies, mintcho oreo, mintcho almonds, mint chocolate ice cream…and a mintcho latte!”

Jungwon felt his stomach churn the longer Sunoo went on. It was still beyond him how a person could unironically enjoy this abomination of a flavor.

At first, he thought Sunoo was honestly joking. He thought Sunoo was acting like he enjoyed mint chocolate only to annoy Jungwon but one day it dawned upon him that Sunoo was not kidding at all.

He had found Sunoo hidden under a blanket, eagerly gobbling down spoonfuls of mint chocolate ice cream and that’s when he knew, that whatever this was…had long developed into more than just a silly little prank.

Nowadays, all Jungwon could do was gulp whenever he saw Sunoo live out his only flaw (in Jungwon’s humble opinion).

“Sure hyung…whatever makes you happy!” Jungwon tried to smile, but it was actually more of a grimace. Good thing Sunoo was too caught up with the variety of snacks on display.

“Also, I made tteokbokki for you! Extra spicy, and I added fish cakes and egg and cheese- just how you like it!”

Sunoo turned around to Jungwon sharply, eyes oddly glossy and- was that a glare?

Jungwon took half a step back, gulping. Sunoo followed. “Jungwonie.”

Said person looked off to the side in nervousness. “Y-yes, hyung…?”

Sunoo walked even closer to Jungwon, lightly making the younger face him, holding eye contact. “Jungwonie.”

Jungwon hummed, sweat dropping at the proximity. Sunoo could be so scary, sometimes.

“If you weren’t into Jay Hyung and I wasn’t- well.” Sunoo briefly looked to the side, gathering his thoughts before he faced his best friend again. “I could kiss you right now, you know? And not like a little friendly smooch, like- an entire makeout session. With tongue and all.” Sunoo nodded and stared deeply into Jungwon’s round doll eyes. This was serious business to him.

“Ah…” Jungwon let out, lacking any other words. Was he supposed to laugh or cry?

But before he could think further about an adequate reaction, Sunoo burst into laughter, slapping Jungwon’s shoulder.

“You should’ve seen your reaction, Wonie!” He gleefully exclaimed, laughing so loudly that Jungwon was dumbfounded. “I’m just kidding!”

Jungwon stared at his laughing hyung, and once again realized just how much smiling suited Sunoo. His best friend was made to smile and laugh; was made to radiate happiness. And whoever tried to take away the innocent joy Sunoo felt for simply living, was automatically starting a fight with Jungwon.

One they wouldn’t win.

Jungwon chuckled. Not at Sunoo’s joke but because he realized this was his ride or die- Sunoo was his friend for life. Eventhough they were both their own individuals, Jungwon knew that at the end of the day, he had a home in Sunoo, as did Sunoo in him.

No matter where life took them, they both knew they had found their soulmates in each other.

“Hyungie. Let’s pay and go back home. The tteokbokki is getting cold.” Jungwon whispered, reaching out for Sunoo’s hand.

Sunoo looked at the hand waiting for him, feeling his cheeks heat up a bit. He reached for Jungwon’s warm hand and nodded at the younger. “Yes. Let’s do that.”

“Born of cold and winter air and mountain rain combining.” Sunoo sang, making Jungwon effectively groan and throw himself onto the couch. Sunoo giggled at the dramatic act. “This icy force both foul and fair has a frozen heart worth mininggg!”

“Hyuuung! This song is atrocious!” Jungwon loudly complained, making Sunoo laugh even more.

“So cut through the heart, cold and clear!” Sunoo stood up and twirled around, dodging pillows Jungwon now started to throw. “Strike for love and strike for fear!”

“Hyung, please! Couldn’t you have chosen Let it Go as your favorite frozen song?” Jungwon whined, using a pillow to almost suffocate himself.

“See the beauty sharp and sheer. Split the ice apart! And break the frozen heart!” Sunoo dragged out the last note, before bowing as if he had an audience and throwing himself back onto the couch.

One look at his best friend, Sunoo could tell he was done. Jungwon’s hair stood in all directions and he breathed heavily, throwing a judgmental glare at Sunoo. Sunoo let out a snort.

“You don’t get it, Wonie! This song hits so hard! Stronger than one, stronger than ten! Stronger than a hundred men!”

“This doesn’t even classify as a song, it’s just a bunch of bulky and beardy men chanting while they work. You simply have a severe case of gayness.”

Sunoo gasped loudly in mock offense. “How dare you accuse me of gayness! You’re more gay than me!”

Jungwon only side-eyed his best friend before reaching for his bowl of tteokbokki. “Whatever makes you sleep at night, I guess…”

Sunoo pouted a bit. “It’s not my fault they’re all very… well built! And they’re strong too!”

Jungwon stared at his friend, aghast. “Hyung! They’re drawn figures! They don’t exist!”

“Your point is? I can still admire an exceptionally well-drawn fictional figure…”

“You’re seriously a hopeless case…” Jungwon only let out, before he ate some tteok. Sunoo only rolled his eyes, wrapping himself into the blankets like a burrito.

They had turned their living room into a comfortable den full of warm blankets and fluffy pillows. They had spread all their snacks and drinks on their little table, with the tissue box placed right in the middle.
Sunoo had said that he was planning on spending the next few days right on the couch, so the least they could do was make the atmosphere comfortable.

This was the hundredth time they were watching the Frozen movies and Jungwon found himself cringing every time he realized he could sing the entire songs and even speak the lines alongside the characters. Sunoo had corrupted him, he realized.

The two continued watching the movie in comfortable silence, only making comments when they thought something was funny or nonsense. They had both watched this movie more often than they could count, so it didn’t come as a surprise that they had nothing to talk about anymore at this point.

Sometime later, when Anna, Olaf, and Kristoff had found each other and were on their way to retrieve Elsa, Jungwon turned around to Sunoo. They had to talk about this. One way or another.

“Hyung.”

“Hm?” came an absentminded answer.

“Do you want to tell me what exactly happened?”

Sunoo tore his gaze away from the movie and faced his best friend. He stared for a few seconds, comprehending the question. “I- I would, but I’m not sure what happened myself..”

“Well, how about you tell me what you do know, and then we can go from there?”

Sunoo faced his lap, trying to gather his thoughts. “So..last night we Facetimed like normal. I think. Well- he told me he loved me and it was just…like always. Then this morning, we texted like normal, although… he was a bit different than usual. not as engaging. But I simply thought he woke up on the wrong side of his bed!”

Sunoo felt that confusion well up in him once again. It just…it just didn’t make any sense!

“And then, when we met up after classes, he just- he just broke up with me. Just like that…”

Jungwon’s forehead was creased in worry. Something wasn’t right here. “What did he say? I mean, what was his explanation?”

The older only shook his head. “No explanation, Wonie. Nothing. Just that he is unable to do this right now. Did he mean me? Am I a load of work? Did he consider me annoying? Was it the way I acted? Was I too affectionate for his taste? Or was I not good enough of a boyfriend for him? Maybe-”

“Hyung! no- no. No, this is not your fault, don’t even-” Jungwon sighed, feeling a headache incoming. “Don’t search for faults in your behavior. He’s the asshole for dropping you just like that, providing no explanation and expecting you to accept it just like that.”

Jungwon migrated to the couch Sunoo was occupying, squeezing himself next to Sunoo.

“I don’t want you to walk around thinking any of what happened today is your fault, okay?” He tightly grabbed Sunoo’s hand, clutching it in his hold. Sunoo felt his eyes water again, heart heavy with sorrow.

“But Jungwonie, I love him so much.” He whispered, voice thick with tears, and Jungwon was quick to nod.

“I know, hyung. I know you do. And I bet he does too. It’s impossible to fall out of love so quickly. And yet, I can admit that he was a real dick for treating you like this. You don’t break up with someone just like that.”

Sunoo faced his lap as teardrops rolled down his cheeks. Jungwon was right…right?

“And I know you must worry so much right now, hyung. I know it must hurt so much. God, I can’t even imagine how you must feel right now.”
Somehow getting his feelings acknowledged like this by Jungwon made Sunoo want to cry even harder. “But you know what else I know?”

Sunoo lifted his head and shook it, holding back sobs.

“I know that you’re one of the strongest people to exist. I know that you’ve always been right next to me whenever I needed you the most. I know that you’re always the first to offer help to people who need it, and I know that you tend to underestimate yourself quite a lot.
I know that you don’t value your strengths as much as you should. And most of all, I know that your mind is more complex than you let on. But all these traits are what make you so strong- you’re in tune with your emotions and your inner self, and if anyone can overcome this, it’s definitely you. Your emotional intelligence is unrivalled, so I kind of expect you out of all people to see that you did no wrong here.
I’m not saying you can’t hurt, that would be an impossible request from my side. I know you’re hurting and I understand the need to wallow in self-pity for a while. But what I want you to know is that things will end up looking better soon, okay?
Life doesn’t stop, and even if we keep having to see the idiot one way or another, one day you will realize he’s not that important. He doesn’t define you. You’re Kim Sunoo, for god’s sake! You slayed before Park Sunghoon was even in the picture, and now that he’s out of it, you’ll start slaying again!”

Sunoo laughed wetly and nodded along to everything Jungwon said. His best friend was so right. There was no need to have an entire existential crisis just because a guy decided to hurt him. Hurt it did, so much Sunoo could tell. He valued the years he spent with Sunghoon like nothing else, but he had to accept that everything came to an end eventually.

“You’re right.” He whispered, mulling everything over in his head.

Jungwon was so right. He always was. And Sunoo was so lucky to have him right by his side because he wouldn’t trade this boy for the world.

“You forgot to mention something else you know about me,” Sunoo spoke, and Jungwon only tilted his head.

“You forgot to mention that I love you the most in the whole wide world.” He smiled softly at his soulmate, and before he could see, Jungwon had once again wrapped him into a hug.

“I’m sorry today happened, Sunoo Hyung. This was surely not the best way to start your summer break…”

Sunoo scoffed. “Tell me about it…” he rolled his eyes and cuddled deeper into Jungwon.

Yeah, today had been rough, but Jungwon had done his very best to overshadow the unfortunate events with love and affection, and Sunoo saw that.
Sunoo saw the efforts he was making, and he appreciated Jungwon so much for it.

“Also, I couldn’t say this because you guys were dating, but… Sunghoon Hyung’s feet smell so bad…”

Sunoo’s body shook as he tried to contain his laughter. He let go of Jungwon and leaned back against the couch, nodding along. “You’re so right, ohmygod… he’d like- freshly shower and come into my bed after and his feet would still smell like those of a construction worker after a 24-hour shift!”

Jungwon hid his giggle behind a hand. “That’s insane. You can’t even make this up, there must be something seriously wrong with his feet.”

Sunoo laughed loudly. “Don’t get me started on the obsession he has with his face like…yes, confidence is important but damn- it was bordering arrogance and excessive self-centeredness.”

“Worse than peacocks oh my god.” Jungwon shook his head.

“This is what happens when you boost the ego of a male.”

“Right? They walk around and act like they own the world. Someone needs to peg them down a notch or two…”

Sunoo reached for his Mint chocolate coated almonds and popped two into his mouth.

“I think the worst thing about him though, was by far, his lack of emotional intelligence. Like boy, why are you acting like a brick? Just talk to me, oh my god.”

Jungwon frantically nodded. “No for real! They wanna seem all many and strong but they just appear dumb…like act like a normal human being please!”

Sunoo laughed and nodded. He loved trash talking men with Jungwon.

“It’s like men come up with a new groundbreaking revelation every day and it just ends up being the dumbest shit to ever grace humanity.”

“Makes me wonder who ever decided to make them lead our society.”

“Probably men, too,” Jungwon answered after a beat.

Sunoo hummed. “Makes sense.”

“He also used a 3 in 1 shampoo, body wash, and conditioner combination…” Sunoo admitted.

Jungwon let out a gasp. “Hyung…no way…”

Sunoo nodded in defeat. “I know- I know! But to be fair, that was pretty much in the beginning! I ended up showing him how it’s done!” He dropped his head into his palms in shame as Jungwon held a hand over his mouth in shock.

“Oh my god…”

Sunoo groaned. He knew this was bad. That was also the reason he never told Jungwon about this!

“Don’t worry, hyung. I think him reading as slow as a fucking snail in class is worse.”

Sunoo turned to Jungwon with his mouth open in surprise. Jungwon nodded with a grin on his features.

“Like- every time it was his turn to read a paragraph in class I ended up excusing myself because I just couldn’t fucking stand it! He reads slower than my six year old nephew, like- what’s so hard about stringing together hangeul?! And if you know you can’t do it then don’t fucking volunteer to read out in class?”

Sunoo couldn’t believe his ears. Sunghoon was a slow reader?? He didn’t even know that!

“This is crazy oh my god…” He let out.

He and Sunghoon didn’t share any lectures or even seminars, because while he was a creative writing major, both Won and Hoon majored in law.
So this was the first time he heard of his seemingly picture-perfect boyfriend being something else than the token student.

He swallowed a few more mint chocolate almonds before listing the next ick he could remember about Sunghoon.

Yeah, maybe this was not the conventional way to handle a breakup, and maybe the things they said about Sunghoon weren’t the nicest but Sunoo was hurt and this was his way of dealing with it, so who cared?

He had shed a lot of tears already, and he knew he would only shed more in the next few days, so what if he wanted to spend one evening trash talking his ex?

The remainder of the night was spent laughing and gossiping over all the most recent university drama. At one point Frozen came to an end and they started singing karaoke instead, screaming out their lungs and hearts to gut-wrenching Olivia Rodrigo songs.
They went over to watch TikTok edit compilations of all their celebrity crushes, crying real tears for all the hot men they saw.

It didn’t come as a surprise when both of them dozed off right in front of their TV, blankets haphazardly thrown over their bodies.

The day had felt longer than it actually was.

Sunoo had expected the day to end with him and Sunghoon cuddling under warm blankets while they watched a movie of Hoon’s choice, because it was Hoon’s turn. He had expected them to grab lunch after all their classes were over at their favorite lunch spot. Then, they would’ve gone over to Hoon’s shared apartment with Jay and Jake Hyung. They would’ve spent some time there, before excusing themselves and heading to Sunoo’s place.

They would’ve kind of spent some time with Jungwon before chasing him out of the apartment to do their couple activities in peace.

After some mind blowing sex (because sex with Sunghoon was always pleasurable and mind numbing, Sunoo had to give him that), they would’ve let the night come to an end wrapped in each other’s arms.

In reality, the day had been nothing like that, but that was only half as bad, Sunoo belatedly realized.

Not fully asleep just yet, Sunoo ended up being shaken awake by the sound of incoming messages from his phone. He groaned as he realized his uncomfortable position- sprawled half across Jungwon’s lap and the floor.

He silently untangled himself from his best friend and reached for his phone, squinting his eyes at the sheer brightness of his display.

He grunted. It was just their stupid group chat. Sunoo only stared at his screen as the messages kept coming in.

Gay, Broke, Dumb and Homeless (+ Sunoo + Jungwon)

Dumb (Jay): Guys, guess fucking what.

Broke (Jake): You finally got us that pet monkey???

Homeless (Heeseung): You finally have a free room in your apartment???

Dumb (Jay):

Dumb (Jay) : No to both omg!

Dumb (Jay): Jake, you literally are our pet monkey, we don’t need another one.

Gay (Sunghoon) : lol. He right abt that one, ikeu…

Broke (Jake) : Boooo! Tomato tomato!

Broke (Jake) : Dude stfu, you better go back to hiding in your room like a caveman!

Gay (Sunghoon) : Jay, we should kick Jake out and give his room to Heeseung Hyung.

Homeless (Heeseung) : OMG!? is this my lucky day!? T^T T^T T^T

Dumb (Jay): Hoon, we can’t do this…

Dumb (Jay) : Heeseung literally has a dorm, he’s just unhappy with it.

Dumb (Jay) : But Jake is actually broke. He won’t find another place to live. And then we’ll have Homeless #1 and #2

Gay (Sunghoon) : ugh. no fun.

Dumb (Jay) : And I’m the dumb one…sure…

Broke (Jake) : Right!! Jay can be glad his parents rich af…

Dumb (Jay): Bro, no one talked about money???

Broke (Jake) : To me, the conversation is always about money >:(

Homeless (Heeseung) : we’ve never spent a summer together as a friend group

Gay (Sunghoon) : Because y’all suck

Dumb (Jay): Jake please stop running and jumping around your room!

Dumb (Jay): we might get a noise complaint!!

Sunoo turned off his phone, staring off into nothing for a second there.

He then turned around to shake Jungwon awake. It was only eleven pm anyway, and it was better for them to at least move to the couch.

“Hy-hyung…?” came the answer of his best friend, voice slurred from sleep. Sunoo cooed. Wonie was so damn adorable.

“Jungwonie, we’re going to Japan!” He eagerly whispered. The excitement was late, but now that he realized what was happening, he couldn’t deny that a summer in Japan sounded so amazing!

“Wh-what…?”

Sunoo nodded. “Yes! Jay Hyung invited us all!”

Jay had offered this trip, and Sunoo would be damned if he stayed home just because Sunghoon broke up with him. Sunghoon could go to hell for all he knew!

As a broke university student, it was a wonder if he even made it to Busan for a weekend, not to talk about trips abroad.

He had never been to Japan.

Sunoo smiled to himself, as he imagined their summer.

This summer would be amazing. Boyfriends and ex-boyfriends could all go fuck themselves.
