Chapter Text
Chaos seated himself at the conference room he'd created as the senior most deity and looked to his compatriots to join him.
They did so with ill-grace.
"She's my daughter.", Magic muttered petulantly.
Chaos raised a hand to silence Death's rebuttal and interjected, "She is.", he said agreeably but his eyes were sharp as he added, "She is just ours too.", as he lowered the hand silencing Death who took the opportunity to needle the youngest deity at the table, "Most people tend to have multiple parents, I'm sure she'll adjust.".
"I'm giving her my blessing first.", the only woman (for a given definition of the word) at the table said determinedly, arms crossed and a mulish expression in place.
Magic was considered something of an oddity among deities for how often she intervened in the mortal world. As a result, seventh-generation deity or not, she wasn't used to having her will crossed in that world before Death and Chaos had ridden roughshod over her desires for little Harriet Potter.
Her and Fate had been setting up such a delightful storyline too!
"Of course.", Chaos acceded even as Death bristled. Looking at the other god at the table he provided his reasoning. "A blessing is a large influx of Power into a mortal body, after all, and our daughter is young yet. We don't want her self-combusting thanks to an inability to handle the surge. Magic's the weakest of us.".
"I want her first magical maturation at seven.", Death responded even as he smirked at Magic as she bristled at being described as the 'weakest' even though it was true.
'I was to go first!", Magic snarled.
"And you can bless her at five with me there to help her shunt the excess into her hair should it become necessary.", Chaos replied without missing a beat.
"Why would you be there?", Magic asked, visibly confused.
"Because I'm crafting her brush." An upraised hand quelled any protest from Death before it could start. "I will not stand for her to go to Hogwarts without my blessing. That means that I must bless her when she claims her rings at ten and takes on her Family Magics. I'm one of the Eldest Gods. If she's to survive my blessing her with her sanity intact then she needs to have experience and familiarity with my Power. I intend to crystallise some of my magic to create her brush."
Both Death and Magic took a moment to digest that revelation.
What Chaos was proposing was not done lightly.
To offer a portion of your Magic, your essence, to another was the highest trust you could offer to another.
Magic whistled lowly.
"Are you sure, Chaos?"
"That seems rather... unsafe."
Chaos sighed heavily, perceiving the direction of her thoughts, but refusing to entertain her doubts.
"Its necessary for her."
Death frowned, not understanding what his co-parents were getting at.
"What do you mean? Why would it be unsafe? Surely the child wouldn't misuse or lose the brush?"
"It could still be stolen or otherwise forcibly taken from her.", Chaos offered.
"Or the jealous harpy that calls itself her Aunt could snatch and snap it.", Magic offered sarcastically.
Death paled at the thought. Chaos' Magic was powerful, destructive and, above all else, chaotic. Add in the amount of Magic that would need to be crystallized to create something as big as a brush and for all it to be released suddenly as raw Magic on the mortal plane....
'The sheer amount of work that would engender....' He shook his head and shivered. 'It didn't bear thinking about.'
Suddenly another thought occurred to him.
"Surely we aren't keeping her with her harpy Aunt, though."
Magic looked up surprised. In her experience, claiming a daughter meant giving them a blessing and a soulmate. Why would they concern themselves with her living arrangements?
Looking at his silent compatriots Death's voice took on a frantic edge, "We can't leave her there! Please, no!".
He looked to Chaos as the highest power in the room. "Chaos, you know what kind of person the last of your Salazar's line became, living in an environment like that. We can't risk her turning out like that. I - I can't even imagine the amount of work that would create - I've already had to deal with TWO World Wars this century - please no MORE!
Chaos sighed heavily, looking down at his clasped hands.
"And what, precisely, would you have us do?", Chaos asked.
"We can't embody ourselves on the mortal plane for more than a few hours, her body can't survive undamaged in the divine realms for any longer and while we can bring her spirit up here without any damage too long or too frequent separation will result in her turning into a disembodied spirit. We don't have any good options."
"Couldn't we just send her to another family though? One that followed the Old Ways, even?", he added, appealing to Magic now. "As it stands she won't even know to honour us as parents!"
Magic frowned, displeased at that thought.
She was used to the thanks and adulation her daughters offered her in thanks for her gift. To be denied that from her newest daughter did not sit well with her.
Chaos looked up in hope, if it could be done?
"Could it be done safely?", he asked Magic.
Magic reached out to examine the child and the magics surrounding and on her.
"No." She shook her head regretfully.
"Perhaps if the child had never come to the house or stayed there only on a temporary basis and understood as a guest...."
The protections Lily Evans placed on her sister and her home and the ones she placed on her child have become enmeshed and tied to the land the first time the child had shed blood there, sweat and tears being already provided prior to that accident.
To remove the girl now would both damage her magical core and disrupt the protection her mother gave her, weakening it to the point of worthlessness.
"Nothing else for it then.", Chaos spoke standing up and slapping his palms onto the table in a unspoken end to their meeting. "We'll have to make do with visiting her in dreams and teaching her ourselves."
