Affair with a Radio

Summary:

Alastor accepted Vox’s offer to be part of his team, but there was a misunderstanding. Vox actually wanted to ask Alastor to become his partner rather than his colleague. Alastor didn’t really grasp that. Now Vox is convinced him and Alastor are dating while Alastor simply thinks they are working together.

Valentino Velvette and Rosie are side characters. Vox and Val's used to have a situationship but they aren't dating in the story.

Notes:

This fanfiction was inspired by a post I saw on tumblr where they imagined a universe in which Alastor accepted to join Vox's team not knowing what he meant was dating.

Chapter 1: The Proposal

Chapter Text

It was the beginning of the new century, Vox had been in Hell for quite some time now, slowly gaining more and more power by introducing people to new technologies and broadcasting on televisions various types of shows. Sinners had started to notice his work, buying televisions, almost one in every house by now. He had also recently teamed up with Valentino and Velvette, opening a whole new chapter to his already successful career. He was considered by every sinner to be just one step away from becoming an Overlord, together with his new friends.

What had been stopping Vox’s rise to Overlord was just one small issue: Alastor, the Radio Demon. For the past decades he had been the source of news and entertainment in Hell and whatever he said was law to the weak minds of sinners. Television hadn’t become the main broadcasting media quite yet just because of him: everyone was still too loyal to their old radios and it was hard to step over someone so powerful.

Working in the entertainment industry Vox had often met Alastor and he had the chance to talk with him a little from time to time. Even though Alastor was well known for his cruelty Vox found out that he was extremely polite and an enjoyable person to talk with, and Al always treated the TV demon with respect despite being an Overlord.

The small talks the two had were something Vox cherished: after all it was only helpful to be friends with his rival, perhaps a little collaboration would have been beneficial for both of them. Being on Alastor’s bad side really wasn’t in his plans so he had been trying for the past years, while he got more and more popular, to have him as a friend rather than an enemy in order to be able to spread the technology of television without any interference.

Vox did in fact succeed in his plan, becoming a friend to Alastor and with time what were only quick chats became whole conversations and the more time Vox spent with Alastor the more he wished to spend with him.

The Radio Demon was really handsome besides being charming and Vox couldn’t help but want to impress him, trying his hardest to become more and more influential. Whenever he was near Alastor he felt butterflies in his stomach and a sense of deep appreciation he simply couldn’t ignore.

One day the two of them were talking about some current events, Al was getting a bit carried away with the conversation and that’s when Vox decided to make his move, asking him to go out that evening to grab a coffee. Alastor accepted and Vox felt his heart skipping a beat.

He had had a crush for the Radio Demon for longer than he could even remember, having gotten so close to him was already a big achievement but he still aimed for more, something more meaningful than a simple friendship.

“Oh, Alastor. You really are one of the worst demons I’ve ever met”

Vox and Alstor were sitting at a table in a tiny cafè near Cannibal Town, having a lot of fun talking about various things. It was a really wonderful place, very intimate, perfect for what Vox had in mind to confess to the Radio Demon.

“I’m flattered, darling”

“There’s something I’ve been wanting to ask you for a while” Vox could already feel his circuits heating up from agitation

“What is it?”

“Well, I really enjoy your company, you are probably the most charming person I’ve ever met…”

Alastor smiled at that compliment, squinting his eyes a little as Vox kept going on

“You are probably the only person I could see myself spending the rest of my eternity with.”

“Mh?”

“Vox and Alastor, don’t you think that our names sound beautiful next to each other? That’s what I would like: for you to be my partner” Vox really got heated up, unable to stay still in his chair, he got closer to Alastor, trying to grab his hand in an affectionate way

“What would your other partners think? The other Vees” Alastor quickly moved his hand away from Vox’s attempt to touch him.

“Valentino and Velvette? Oh, what’s between us isn’t like this… Don’t worry about them” sure, him and Valentino had this sort of on and off relationship but it really meant nothing much to him

“I have to say it’s an interesting proposal. I’m sure together we could accomplish great things. With my power and your new technologies, we could really be a great couple”

Vox’s screen brightened with excitement

“Is this a yes..?”

“Sure thing. I’d happily team up with you” Alstor smiled, showing all his teeths.

Vox stood up from his chair, his cheeks turning red, he tried to cover his face with his hands, the biggest dumbass smile printed on his screen. Alastor was interested in him as much as he was! Oh, how beautiful! He had been so afraid of admitting his feelings but he now saw that there was no reason to be afraid of it, Alastor liked him as well! He felt as if he was floating a few meters above the ground from the excitement, his heart pounding in his chest. Unfortunately Vox didn’t know that there had been a great misunderstanding on the other party’s side.

“Oh, Al! I am the happiest man alive! Or, well… dead” he giggled

“Alastor and Vox… yes, I like how it sounds” Alastor was speaking to himself out loud. The power that together they could have had, he couldn't help but imagine the bright future ahead and smile at that thought. Television wasn’t anymore an enemy to fear, taking listeners away from him, but rather a new instrument to further expand his domain over Hell. How foolish of Vox, asking for a partnership with him! He would have acted as a nice colleague only to slowly turn Vox and his group into his tools to become the one and only most powerful Overlord Hell had ever seen!
