Work Text:
Itoshi Sae, an outstanding midfielder that left for Spain four years ago, giving up on his dream of being the world’s best striker with his brother. An emotionally repressed 18 year old who completely gave up with his education when he left Japan. However, his coach, Leonardo Luna, has decided that something changes.
So here Sae is, sitting in his coach’s office waiting for the blond male to explain why he’s here waiting in the first place.
“Forgive me for making you wait.” Luna says as soon as he enters the office. He takes his seat as his desk, props his elbows on the table and rests his hand on his intertwined fingers. “Now, Sae, I’ve been made aware that you can’t do anything besides football.” The blond smiles.
Sae huffs and crosses his arms.
“Heh, I see. Well as you probably know, your brother, Rin, has been put in a school that specializes in athletes.”
“Where are you going with this?” Sae raises a brow.
“What I’m trying to say, Sae. Is that you have a terrible education. And,” Luna gives his signature smile while he sits up straight. “Ego Jinpachi, the maker of Blue Lock, whom made this school for his athletes, has sent you an offer to join this school if you wish.”
Sae’s eyes widen for a second out of surprise, but he quickly goes back to his unamused expression. “And?”
“And, I’ve chosen to accept this offer for you.”
“What!?” Sae quickly jumps out of his chair and slams his hands on Luna’s desk. “Why? There’s no need!” He glares at his coach.
“What’s nine times nine?”
“Uh- hang on.” Sae removes his hands from the desk and starts counting on his fingers. It takes a minute but finally he answers. “80.”
“Wrong, it’s 81.” Luna chuckles.
“Shit.” Sae mumbles under his breath.
“My point being, is that you had to count on your fingers for god's sake. You can’t do anything that isn’t football related.”
Although it stings to hear coming from his coach, Sae knows that it isn’t a lie. He opts to stay silent and take his seat again.
“So, like I said, I accepted Ego’s offer and you will transfer there soon.”
“Why’d he even make a school for them anyway?” Sae tilts his head in confusion.
“Simple, those athletes are just like you. Can’t do anything besides play ball.” Luna says as he rests his head on his knuckles, elbow on the table. “Even your fellow Generation XI players are there. You know, Don Lorenzo and Michael Kaiser.” The blond smiles happily.
“Ew.” Sae rolls his eyes. “Fine though, I guess I’ll do it.”
“I mean, you haven’t really a choice.” Luna’s smile turns a bit eerie. “I already accepted it after all.”
Sae sighs before standing up. “When am I leaving?”
“Four days. I’d get ready if I were you.”
“Very well. This better be worth my time.” Sae goes to open the office door and walk out before he’s stopped.
“Also, that boy you took interest in during the U-20 match.” Luna grins. “He’s there, obviously, as is everyone else from Blue Lock. Now could be your chance.” He raises his eyebrows up and down as his grin grows larger.
“Tch.” Sae walks out of the office quickly after hearing that. His ears are slightly red though.
“Bye.” Sae waves without even looking at his coach. Sae’s manager, Gerard Dabadie, sweats nervously as he stands next to Luna.
“Not even going to look at me? What if you never see me again, hmm?” Luna taunts.
“Tch.” Sae stops his walking and turns around. “Fine, goodbye or whatever. Cya Gerard.” The midfielder nods at his manager in acknowledgement. To be honest, Sae is quite fond of Gerard, he’ll just never say that out loud.
Luna smiles in victory as he waves off his star player.
“It feels so weird not going with him..” Gerard mumbles to himself as he fiddles with his fingers.
“You’re worried right?” Luna places a hand on the nervous man’s shoulder. “He’ll be alright. Hopefully he’ll finally get those feelings of his off his chest too.”
“Feelings?”
“Mhm.” Luna removes his hand from the other’s shoulder and places it on his hip. “Our dear Sae has feelings for a certain Japanese striker that caught his eye a couple months ago.” The Spaniard grins.
“Oh! That’s great.” Gerard smiles lightly. “I wish the best for him!”
“I honestly don’t see what’s all good with Isagi Yoichi, but oh well. Maybe one day the kid will prove me wrong.” Luna shakes his head as he turns around and begins his walk out of the airport.
“What the fuck.” Rin glares at his brother who just randomly shows up at their home.
“Can I come in or what?” Sae scoffs.
“Why are you here?” Rin’s glare gets harsher.
“I live here?” Sae rolls his eyes. “Move.”
“Tch, whatever. Welcome home I guess.” Rin moves out of the way and lets Sae into the Itoshi family home.
“Where’s mom and dad?”
“Out.”
“‘Kay.” Sae wastes no time and heads straight to his room to set his suitcase there. Afterwards he walks back to the living room. “Where’s your school at?”
This catches Rin slightly off guard. The younger had decided to sit on the couch after he let his brother inside the home, but he’s very quick to stand back up. “The hell do you wanna know? Wait.”
“Mhm. Just tell me.”
“No, you aren’t. You mean that’s why you’re here? Are you fucking kidding me?” Rin scowls.
“Congrats, you get to go to school with me. Hurray or whatever.” Sae speaks in his normal monotone voice.
“Whatever, it’s not even far from here, figure it out yourself.“ Rin rolls his eyes and power walks to his room, a door slam can be heard as well.
Sae sighs and rubs the bridge of his nose.
“This will be so much fun.”
“That way to Ego’s office.” Rin points down the school’s long hallway. “It literally says ‘Ego’s Office’ on the door so you shouldn’t get lost.”
“Okay.” Sae starts heading down the hall. “Thanks.”
Rin’s eyes widen just a bit at that, but he ignores it quickly. Rin clicks his tongue and heads to his first class of the day.
After the bell rings signaling that it’s lunch time, Rin is one of the first people out of his class, not wanting to deal with anyone nor wait. He heads to the lunch room, gets his food and sits at a far back table. Honestly Rin has been pissed off ever since two days ago when his brother just randomly showed up out of nowhere.
He’s so deep in his own thoughts about how much he hates his brother that he doesn’t even notice when someone approaches and sits across from him.
“Hey.” A male voice greets.
Rin looks up from his food tray, kind of startled. “Oh, it’s you. The hell you want?”
The male across from him smiles. “Something wrong? You seem agitated.”
“What’s it matter to you? Can’t you just leave me alone, Isagi?” Rin clicks his tongue.
The male, who is Isagi, sighs. “God it’s so hard talking to you.” He frowns.
Deep down this slightly pains Rin, but he’d never admit that.
“I was just curious, okay? Seems something is bothering you.” Isagi smiles. “I’m always here for you to talk to if you want.”
“Tch. Whatever.”
Isagi’s frown grows larger as he looks down at his own tray of food. “If you don’t want me here then just tell me to leave.”
Rin takes a moment to study Isagi’s face. The older one is clearly sad and dejected. This is yet again another stab to Rin’s heart. To be honest, Rin has the biggest crush on Isagi possible. He likes his attention, likes when Isagi talks to him, likes when Isagi worries about him.
But this is Itoshi Rin.
“Then leave.”
And Itoshi Rin is emotionally constipated.
Isagi sighs, his frown has grown somehow even larger than it was before. He grabs his tray, gets up and heads towards another table.
Rin watches as he leaves and sits down next to Bachira. The bee pats him on the back right away and starts chatting to him. One thing Rin doesn’t notice however, is that his brother has seen and heard his entire interaction with Isagi.
“The hell is wrong with you?”
Rin jumps slightly, he turns and is greeted by his brother. “What?”
“At lunch. Why are you such an ass to Isagi?”
“What does it matter to you?” Rin spits.
“Isagi was literally just trying to be your friend. No need to be an asshole to him.” Sae crosses his arms as he walks next to his brother down the hall.
“Whatever. Isagi means nothing to me.”
“Now that’s a lie. You’re so obvious. But fine, if he means nothing to you then you wouldn’t mind if I took him, hmm?” Sae gives his brother a sly smirk.
“What?’ Rin stops and glares at him.
“I’m just saying. Watch it.”
“Oh fuck off Sae.” Rin flips him off and walks down the hall and into a classroom.
Sae watches his brother leave, he sighs and as he turns around to walk back down the hall to his next class he’s greeted by a certain German.
“Funny seeing you here, hm?” Kaiser smirks.
“Ew.”
“Yeah yeah, anyway, what’s your brother's deal? He has Yoichi’s attention and yet he fumbles.”
“He’s a loser.”
“Well I can tell that much.” Kaiser rolls his eyes. “Anyway it doesn’t matter, Yoichi will be mine one day.” He says with confidence. “Now come with me, Ego said I have to be the one to show you around for some reason.”
“You’re so delusional, it’s kinda funny. But sure, lead the way.”
“I’ll pretend like you didn’t call me that.” Kaiser’s eye twitches.
The next day during lunch, Sae sees it again. Rin sits at a table all by himself and Isagi approaches, sits down, and tries to talk to him. And yet again, Rin pushes him away even though he so clearly craves the attention. Such a rat. Sae thinks to himself as he sits at a table not too far away from Rin’s.
“Ya know Rin-” “Do you ever shut up?” Rin cuts Isagi off.
Isagi’s mouth opens a bit to say something, but he stops himself. He frowns, picks up his tray and gets up. Rin watches Isagi do this, something tells him to make Isagi stay but yet he watches him leave.
Sae sees this as a chance. So he calls out, “Yo Isagi. Over here.” He waves and gestures to the seat next to him.
Isagi stares at him for a second before smiling and heading over. He sits and gives a sheepish smile, not sure why he’s been called over. “Did you need something, uh.. Sae-senpai..?”
The word senpai causes Sae’s brain to take a pause. Out of everyone he’s met he’s only ever been called senpai once. After a moment though, he answers. “My brother is a dick to you.”
Isagi’s eyes widened in surprise. “Ah.. he’s just like that.. It’s fine, trust me!”
“It’s not fine. He’s a loser and a douche.” Sae says loud enough for his brother to hear.
“...” Isagi pokes at his food.
“Why do you try with him anyway?”
“I mean, I just wanna be friends with him. Hell we fight and work together on the field but..”
“But for anything else, he’s like that?” Sae finishes Isagi’s sentence for him.
Isagi gives a small and sad nod.
“Lukewarm.” Sae shakes his head in disappointment. He goes to say something but then it crosses his mind. Should I help Isagi befriend Rin or just snatch him away for myself?
“Sae-senpai?” Isagi tilts his head to the side.
“Sorry, was deep in thought.” The midfielder quickly goes over the pros and cons of helping Isagi win over his brother, then the pros and cons of just keeping Isagi for himself.
And so far the pros are far more in Sae’s favor.
“Say, Isagi.”
“Hmm?”
“My brother is an asshole and not worth your time.” Sae locks eyes with Isagi. “You should give your attention to me instead.” He smiles.
This causes Isagi’s eyes to nearly fall out of the sockets.
Sae finds his shocked expression cute, and certain feelings start to resurface.
“Oh uh..” Isagi puts a hand to his chin. “I suppose you’re right, Rin seems to be a lost cause.”
“True that.” Sae nods as he takes a bite of rice.
“Then, Sae-senpai, would you like to hang out or something?”
Sae’s heart does a backflip. Not trusting his words, he gives a curt nod.
The shorter’s smile grows extremely big. “Here, I’ll give you my phone number!”
“Sure.”
Isagi whips out his phone and the two exchange phone numbers, however, Isagi doesn’t pay attention to the person watching the exchange, Sae does though.
Sae side eyes his brother and smirks.
The glare Rin sends his brother would have anyone terrified, but Sae is Sae and knows his brother won’t do jack shit.
Knock, Knock, Knock.
“Rin, go get the door.” Mr. Itoshi says from the kitchen.
“Why me?”
“Because I said so.” His father says sternly.
“Such a pain.” Rin huffs as he gets off the couch and answers the door. His eyes go extremely wide when he sees who it is.
“Oh.. hi Rin.”
“Isagi!? What are you doing here? Can’t you ever just leave me alo-” “Ah Isagi, you’re here. Come on in.” Sae cuts his brother off.
Isagi looks at Rin once more before pushing past him and going straight towards Sae. “Hello Sae-senpai!” He smiles fondly at the taller.
“Hello.” Sae pats Isagi on the head lightly. “Come, we can study in my room.”
“Thanks again!”
“Of course.” Sae smiles at him before looking back at his brother and smirking.
Rin stands there as the front door closes on its own, he watches as his brother takes Isagi away.
“Cya at school tomorrow. Sure you don’t need me to walk you home?” Sae says as he stands in the doorway.
“I’m fine, don't worry! Cya!” Isagi waves and walks away. The two studied together for nearly four hours straight.
Sae smiles as he watches him walk off before entering the house and shutting the door, when he looks towards the living room however, he’s met by a death glare.
“What’s your deal?” Rin scoffs.
“What? Can’t tutor my cute junior?”
“Tch.” Rin stands and walks over. “It’s been almost a week now. Isagi hasn’t spoken to me once ever since you two started ‘bonding’ or whatever.”
“Jealous?” Sae snickers.
“Just what’s your fucking game here?”
“Game? There isn’t a game. I’m just simply being better than you.” Sae snorts before turning and walking back to the hall. “You had your chance with him, you screwed it up first.”
Rin watches Sae walk away, he balls his fists and curses under his breath.
A few weeks go by with this new development. Isagi has completely decided to ignore Rin and just hang out with his brother. I mean, Sae is treating him nicely after all, why wouldn’t he want to hang out with him?
The issue is that Rin isn’t the only jealous one.
“YOICHI!”
Isagi groans.
“Why are you always with that, thing..” Kaiser cringes just thinking about Sae. “You should hang with me instead!”
“I’m good. Besides, your little dog would maul me to death if I did.”
Kaiser thinks for a moment. “Alexis is just like that, he wouldn’t actually hurt you. I don’t think so anyway.”
Isagi is not convinced in the slightest.
“Anyway. Why Sae of all people? I’m at the top of my classes too, I can tutor you!”
“Well I actually enjoy Sae’s company. And he’s not a weirdo like you.”
“Ugh!” Kaiser deeply sighs. “Listen Yoichi, I’m jealous.” He says outright.
“I can tell. Rin is too.”
“So? I’m more jealous! You know damn well that I like you.”
“I know you do.” Isagi locks eyes with him. “You’ve confessed at least 16 times in the past four months.”
“And you break my heart every time!”
“Because you’re annoying and I don’t like you like that, duh.” Isagi rolls his eyes and goes back to doing his assignment. “If all you came to my classroom to do was bark, bark and bark, then please leave.”
Kaiser groans in frustration. “Hmm, well, a little birdie told me something interesting.” The German smirks as he leans down on Isagi’s desk.
“What?”
“Sae has had a little crush on you ever since you scored that final goal~”
Isagi raises a brow. “U-20 match?”
“Mhm~”
“Interesting. Who told you that?” Isagi narrows his eyes at Kaiser.
“A birdie.”
“Which birdie?”
“Shidou.”
“Figures. He somehow knows everything.” Isagi sighs. “At least when it’s Sae related.”
“True that.” Kaiser stands up straight. “Well thought I’d let my bestie know~”
“Not your bestie.” Isagi grimaces.
“Tsk, tsk, tsk!” He wags his pointer finger in Isagi’s face. “If I can’t date you, then you’re my bestie. No other choice.”
“Ewww, what kind of deal is that?”
“Now then, do you like Sae back?”
“Hmm, maybe? I’m not sure.” Isagi puts a hand to his chin and ponders.
“Perfect! I’ll ask him out on a date for you then! Give me your phone.” Kaiser claps his hands together and reaches for Isagi’s bag that’s by one of the desk’s legs.
“What! No!” He tries to stop him, but alas, Kaiser was faster. “Kaiser no!”
“Too late~” Kaiser opens Sae’s contact and he begins typing.
Isagi tries to reach for his phone, but by the time he gets it from the German’s hands. The text has been sent.
“Do you want to go out some time Sae?”
“WHAT HAVE YOU DONE YOU RETARDED FUCK!” Isagi shouts as he reads the text Kaiser sent.
“I’m just doing God’s work!” Kaiser winks.
“YOU MOTHER FUC-” Ding!
“You gonna check that?” Kaiser grins.
“Sure, when and what time?”
Isagi’s eyes widened fully, his mouth agape.
“Oh my~ Told ya he liked you!” Kaiser purrs as he looks over Isagi’s shoulder to read the text.
“Thanks.. I suppose..” Isagi’s face flushes.
“Mhm, not a problem~” Kaiser smacks his ass and goes to walk away.
"What the hell!” Isagi shouts.
Suddenly Kaiser gets serious, as he grabs the classroom door’s handle. “If he hurts you, let me know.”
“Oh please, you’d be the one I’d worry about hurting me!”
Kaiser smirks at that and sends one last wink before opening the door and walking down the hall. Leaving Isagi all by himself in the classroom. He sits back down and stares at the text, not really knowing what to say.
So he opts to just saying ‘fuck it’ and calls Sae.
“Uh.. hey..” Isagi awkwardly greets after the line picks up.
“Hello, Isagi.”
“Umm…”
“Someone else sent that text right?” Sae giggles a bit.
“Ah… you could tell..”
“Kinda obvious.” He lets out another small giggle. “Though, do you want to go out? Honestly I’ve liked you for some time now, Isagi.”
This causes the raven haired to freeze up, his face flushes even more, if that’s even possible.
“Isagi?”
“Ah.. sorry, um, you caught me off guard.. Actually Sae-senpai.. I’d like to.”
“Great, when are you free?” Sae asks happily.
After Kaiser’s amazing wingmanning, Sae and Isagi go out for their first date. And after that, a second date. Soon a third. And now the two are officially a couple. It happened sweetly too, Sae bought Isagi his favorite flowers, some candy and kintsuba, and one more special gift.
However with these gifts, Sae showed up at their third date and asked him to be his boyfriend. It was a romantic restaurant too, so it added to the flavor. Although, the special gift and its meaning is what really caught Isagi’s eye and sparked his interest in Sae.
“Is this.. A La Real jacket?” Isagi cocks his head to the side.
“Mhm, custom to you.”
“Wait what!? Why?” Isagi’s eyes widened.
“I want you to go to Spain with me.” Sae says honestly.
“I-”
“You don’t have too. It’s just something to think about.” Sae continues. “I will leave for Spain again in a couple months, after graduation.”
Isagi’s mouth goes agape for a second before he shuts it and listens.
“Since I’m a grade above you, I obviously graduate first. And I’m aware you still have one more year left but,” Sae pauses. “I could talk to Ego and see if you can graduate early.”
Isagi’s eyes practically are popping out of his head at this point.
“Since this school is mainly only for all of you Blue Lockers, it shouldn’t be an issue.”
“Sae..”
“I really like you, Isagi. I’ve liked you ever since you caught my eye and proved me wrong about Japanese football.” Sae reaches his hand across the table and intertwines their fingers. “Will you be my boyfriend and go to Spain with me?”
“Heh.” Isagi chuckles as he smiles brightly. “Never thought that would be how you asked.”
“So is that a yes?” Sae gets his hopes up.
“A yes to being your boyfriend. I’m not sure about Spain yet.” Isagi giggles as he squeezes Sae’s hand. “And stop calling me Isagi. Yoichi is fine.”
“Very well, Yoichi.” Sae nods and smiles. “If you’re worried about your football career, don’t. I can help you prove your worth to Luna so that he’ll of-”
“No need. The U-20 World Cup is coming up before graduation, you do know that right? Hehe. I’ll just prove my worth to him then.” Isagi suddenly gets filled with confidence.
“I see.” Sae smiles fondly once more. “Then allow me to be your midfielder.”
So that’s how it happened, a couple months go by and the U-20 World Cup game comes quickly. The match itself was a breathtaking one. The final score being 3-2. In Japan’s favor of course. Japan went against Germany, Isagi and Kaiser fought against each other wildly. Japan however had Itoshi Sae, though he would only pass to whom he saw as worthy.
And Isagi, his new boyfriend, was that worthy guy.
So the U-20 World Cup was won with a difficult battle, Isagi scored the final goal and made his worth be on par with Kaiser. A big 360 million Yen.
“I’LL MISS YOU ISAGI!!” Bachira yells as he waves his best friend off.
“I’LL MISS YOU TOO!!!” Isagi yells back as he waves.
Isagi got an offer from La Real and accepted Sae’s invitation to Spain. Sae did indeed talk to Ego about having Isagi graduate early, but Ego didn’t really give two shits so he just graduated them both and sent them off.
Everything was all fine and dandy. For everyone but Itoshi Rin.
Truth be told, even though it’s been over five months by now. Rin has never gotten over it. His anger and rage has been building up ever since that first day when Sae made his move on Isagi. And now Rin’s about to watch his brother leave for Spain, again. But this time, Isagi is leaving too.
Rin tried getting this rage out on the field during the U-20 World Cup, but Isagi never once looked at him. And that was the worst feeling in the world. Rin was breaking, he couldn’t take it anymore. He can’t just watch Isagi leave without saying something.
So he yells out.
“ISAGI!”
Upon hearing his name, he stops and turns.
Rin runs up to him as fast as he could. “I’m sorry!”
“Rin..”
“I never should’ve pushed you away like that. I’m sorry.” Rin holds Isagi by the shoulders, maintaining eye contact. “I regret it. I can’t take it anymore, Isagi. I've been in love with you for so long now.”
Isagi’s eyes widen, his mouth goes agape. The audience of people, which consists of nearly everyone in Blue Lock, goes silent and watches with wide eyes.
“Seeing you with my brother all the time hurts. I’m sorry, I know it’s my fault. I don’t hate you.” Rin says all in one breath.
“Rin.” Isagi sighs. “I’m sorry.”
Rin pauses.
“You pushed me away first. I don’t hate you or anything, but-”
“He’s my boyfriend. Thought that was obvious.” Sae suddenly appears on Isagi’s right. “You fucked up, so fuck off.”
“What?” Rin’s world crashed right in front of him. “Isagi..”
“Sorry Rin.” Isagi takes a step back and into Sae’s arms. “You honestly made me depressed with your ignoring. Sae however made me happy.”
Rin slowly starts to breathe faster.
“But what Sae said.” Isagi locks eyes with Rin, making sure the latter doesn’t look away. “I tried talking to you, befriending you. Hell I liked you too. But you were such a dick! It hurt. So Rin,”
He waits, his eyes sting, he wants to cry but there are so many people around.
“Rin, kindly fuck off.”
“Ah! Isagi Yoichi!” A voice greets, there’s a heavy Spanish accent though.
Isagi bows, “Luna-san, thank you for this opportunity.”
Leonardo Luna gives a smug grin. “You proved me wrong kiddo, you’re very impressive. Welcome to La Real’s youth team.”
Isagi stands up straight and smiles at his new coach. Sae, who’s standing next to him, intertwines their fingers.
“Oh?” Luna takes notice. “Oh my, it seems you really went for it, huh?”
“Shut up.” Sae says unamused.
“Hey!” Isagi uses his free hand to flick Sae in the head. “Anyway, once more, thank you.” He bows again.
“Heh, and once again. Welcome to the team, Isagi Yoichi.” Luna has a genuine smile on his face.
“Well, well, well. What do we have here~” An arrogant voice speaks.
“Oh, I forgot you even got an offer.” Sae says in his normal monotone voice.
“Kaiser!” Isagi’s eyes widened.
“That’s right! You can’t escape me that easily!!” Kaiser puts his hands on his hips and grins. “You and I are destined to be together Yoichi~”
Sae blinks at the German a couple of times before grabbing his boyfriend's wrist and taking him elsewhere.
EXTRA!:
“Ummmm….” Bachira hesitates. “Do you uh, wanna talk about it?”
“No.” Rin says blankly as he munches on the chips he was given.
The gang is currently at Chigiri’s sleepover. After Isagi left for Spain and left everyone else in Japan, Bachira dragged Rin to Chigiri’s house and now here they are.
“I had no clue you were in love with Isagi.” Reo states as he pats Nagi’s head which is currently in his lap.
“Shut up.”
“Sucks that your brother beat you to it.” A German voice says suddenly.
“Ness?!?” Kurona snaps his head towards the German. “What are you doing here?”
“Kaiser left me here, the rest of Bastard and I don’t go back to Germany for another week.” Ness says blankly. The poor guy seems like he’s been crying himself to sleep.
“Oh..” Hiori mumbles. “Well, welcome to the squad.”
“Thanks.” Ness once again, speaks blankly.
“Here Rin, this tea will help you feel better.” Chigiri hands him a cup with hot tea.
“Thanks, I guess.”
“Does anybody have any encouraging words for our emo?” Bachira suddenly asks a bit loudly.
Karasu, Otoya, Aiku and Sendou shake their heads no before putting a finger to their lips in a shushing manner. Before taking that finger and showing their jaw lines.
“What the fuck.” Rin deadpans at the four who are mewing.
