A New and Revised History of Magical Great Britain

Summary:

The world building in the canonical Harry Potter series holds a plethora of contradictions, English colonialists paradigms, and a great many gaps in which an enterprising fan might explore or extrapolate.

I’ve seen wonderful AUs to address these issues, but then I thought, what if the problem stems not from JKR's world building, but the in-world flaws of Magical Great Britain and the way winners write history?

This fanfic is a “textbook” written by a self-insert author to explore this idea and act as a reference work for my own potential future stories.

Chapter 1: Introduction

Chapter Text

Many modern witches and wizards are familiar with the phrase Harry-Who, and those who have lived in Wizarding Britain are likely familiar with its meaning and usage. If so, this passage may read as redundant or superfluous, however I felt it an important detail to include for the sake of completeness.

The term Harry-Who came about due to the surging popularity of the names Harry, Henry, Harriet, Harriett, and Henrietta in the decades following You-Know-Who’s first defeat by Harry Potter in 1981, and then again after his second defeat in 1998. This culminated in the famous 2010 sorting in which five Harrys were sorted in a row.

As the story goes, students in the halls were frequently heard asking each other “Harry who?” In reference to their peers, providing the first iteration of the colloquialism. The more common application of the term came about in the late 2010s, when the same generation entered the workforce and we saw the first use of the phrase sign your Harry-Who here, meaning of course, sign your name here. Hence the adoption of Harry-Who as a placeholder name alongside such classics as Thingum Bob, John Doe, and Mary Sue.

I have adopted Harry Who as my pen name out of love for the term and the necessity of anonymity when publishing historical content contradictory to the propagandist and revisionist narrative pushed by the British Ministry.

This text will seek to uncover the true history of Wizarding Great Britain and shed light on periods that have previously been obfuscated.
