Chapter Text
It’s 4:44 in the morning when Danny gasps awake with something like a left-over startle reflex. The mattress kicks back, but it feels off-center, somehow, like his is not the only weight on it. “What the...?” he asks the dark room, disorientation making his eyes fly open. There’s not much of a difference, however.
He knows he’s not in his own bed. This one is much too comfortable, and it smells different, better, too. Carefully, with the caution of more than a decade on the force, he lets his hands explore the sheets. There’s a distinct lack of danger, his senses tell him, but until he’s got actual proof that he’s safe, he doesn’t dare to trust them; they have lied to him before.
His left hand comes into contact with a wall; cool, smooth and safe. At the same time, his right hand feels warmer, feels the familiar comfort of body heat that’s not his own. On some level, he knows whose it is, but his sleep-befuddled brain makes him turn over so that he can use both hands to explore the source of the heat.
His eyes have adapted to the low light, and when they land on the dark lump next to him, they crinkle in a soft smile that soon takes over his entire face.
