Work Text:
Another date night had been ruined by a case, they should be used to it by now. Why bother making plans with the job they had? Every time they planned something specific, a call came and they had to work through it. Maybe they should start going with the flow and just do whatever was possible with no prior reservation. Surely it couldn’t be worse than constantly having to make the call to cancel on the restaurant last minute.
This time, the case was paired with a power outage in the NCIS offices. Something that didn’t feel like a coincidence, someone was trying to make it harder for the team to catch them. But they would figure it out. For one, Jimmy seized the opportunity to salvage some time with his girlfriend by having Jessica come help him. She would hold the flashlight while he performed the autopsy.
“So, we officially cancelled at this restaurant enough times that they said they won’t take reservations from me again,” Jimmy tried to make conversation.
“Well, I guess I’ll just have to make the reservation myself next time.”
“You still want to try that? Haven’t we had enough plans ruined already? It seems every time we make reservations, a case comes on.”
“I know, but this restaurant is supposedly really good and it’s impossible to get a table without a reservation.”
“I get it, our job makes it hard to have a normal life.”
“It does. But I wouldn’t change it.”
“Me neither.”
They worked alternating between silence and conversation until the autopsy was done and Jimmy was ready to give a cause of death. They sent some samples to Kasie to analyse, though they had no idea how she would do it without electricity. Then they had nothing to do but wait. Well, Jessica could always go and help the team, and Jimmy could go and help Kasie, but they decided to take a moment of break. It was cold down in autopsy, and Jessica looked like she was shivering. Jimmy took out a blanket and wrapped in around themselves as they sat on one of the tables. A combination of blanket and body heat was all they needed to warm up again and be ready to go out and help the team.
“This is nice,” Jessica said. “The décor’s a little creepy, but otherwise this would be pretty romantic.”
“I’d start a fire, but it wouldn’t be safe.”
Jessica snuggled in closer to him and he tightened his embrace around her. He was so happy with her, it was hard to believe they actually found each other and fell in love. He felt so lucky to have her and he knew she felt the same. They closed their eyes, just for a moment, feeling so comfortable leaning against each other.
“Are you guys sleeping?” Nick ruined what had been a really nice moment.
“No, we’re not,” Jessica said. “We’re just sitting. And we’re allowed a little break. Do you know how much it hurts your arm to hold a flashlight over a body for the full length of an autopsy? And do you know how long that is?”
“I’m sure it’s longer than I’d think.”
“Exactly.”
Nick had come to fetch them to help so they, sadly, had to leave the comfort of the blanket and go back to work.
