Chapter 1: Prologue - Crushes on the Battlefield
Chapter Text
“Mission begins in sixty seconds.” A familiar voice called over the loudspeaker. The Red team was in their base getting ready for the battle.
Scout had just finished wrapping his hands and noticed Sniper sitting by the side door also as usual, so he decided to join him.” yo snipes!” he called out to him jogging over
“Ready for the mission? I'm gonna dominate that blue spy this time. Get my well-deserved revenge. Sniper only chuckled and nodded in response. “Sniper wasn't much of a talker, Scout knew that but sometimes he just wished he was.
Scout loved to hang out with Sniper. They were beginning to get very close over the past few months and it was great. They hung out outside of work a bunch, Sniper let Scout drag him around and talk his head off for hours, all he could want in a friend.
Although to Scout, Sniper was more than a friend, more than a best friend too. Scout could be himself around Sniper, not the cocky jerk he pretended to be. Something about Sniper was just so comforting
“Three…Two…One.” The voice was back over the loud-speaker. Scout waved bye to the sniper and ran out towards the main door. When the round started he got a few good hits in, earning 3 kills and 4 assists.
He would see Sniper a few times throughout the match and waved at him before running off but this one time was different. He was stopped for a good while just looking up at him lost in his thoughts
He thought about Sniper and how he felt about him. Maybe he didn't just see him as a great friend, maybe as more than that. Maybe this was a crush. He never acted the way he did with sniper around his other friends.
He acted more closely to how he acted around Miss Pauling, he stuttered and shook, way less. All of a sudden he was grabbed by his arm and pulled off to the sidelines
“What the hell are you doing out there son?” The Texan yelled, shaking the scout's shoulder. “You were just starting into space, Sniper had to call me to come get you, what's up?” Engineering asked as he began building a turret.
“I uh, it's nothing Engie, my bad,” Scout replied softly, rubbing the back of his neck. The engineer stopped building for a second and looked the boy up and down before signing.
“Look son, I care about you, you know that. But you need to keep your relationships off the battlefield. We all seem to know about you and Sniper and we don't care but-” Engine spoke while still building his turret.
“What?” Scout asked cutting him off “We all know about you and Sniper's relationship .” The Texan repeated. “WE AIN'T TOGETHER MAN?!” Scout yelled waving his hands around like a maniac
“I-I don't even know if I like him in that way. I mean he's great, a stand-up guy but I ain't gay Engineer.” Scout explained “Ok Scout, whatever you wanna call it but you need to get that stuff in order so you can do your job right.” He was scolded but Scout knew he was right
“We're going on Winter break in a few weeks. Why don't you take that time to get this in order? I don't want the administrator going and firing ya.” Engie finally said, patting Scout's back.”Now get back to work!” He quickly added pushing Scout back into the battlefield.

Once the match was over everyone was back in the base relaxing. Scout had sat down next to Sniper who was watching something on TV with some of the others. “Hey Lad, Ya good? ya seemed distracted out there?” Demoman asked looking over sniper to see at scout. “Yes, Is true. Baby man was less focused than normal.” The heavy said from another part of the room.
Most of the team had the problem of budding into conversations that were not their own but everyone was used to it by now “Uh yeah, I’m good just had some stuff on my mind.” Scout said not wanting to talk about what happened, it was honestly embarrassing he needed to be more focused.
Sniper glanced over at Scout for a second. He could tell he was upset but didn’t want to ask him in front of the whole group just in case he was nervous or didn’t want to discuss it. Sniper got up and walked over to the kitchen grabbing a coffee for himself and a bonk for Scout.
He sat back down handing Scout the bonk not saying anything after that “Hey thanks, man!” Scout said happily opening the can without hesitation. He sipped happily swinging side to side “You really know how to cheer a guy up!” Scout announced nudging Sniper softly before continuing to slurp his drink
Sniper just nervously smiled as a reply before quickly looking away his face turning a light shade of pink. Why was he getting so nervous over something so harmless Scout said something friendly that anyone could have said, he shouldn’t feel embarrassed over a tiny compliment.
He glanced over at a Demoman who just wiggled his eyebrows and giggled about something with Soldier. He wondered what was so funny, was it because he was flustered over a compliment? Maybe they realized how weird it was and thought he was a weirdo. Suddenly the door to the commons room opened and in walked Miss Pauling wearing her usual shirt and skirt combo. To the rest of the group, she was nothing special but to Scout, she was more than beautiful.
Scout instantly perked up when she walked in “Yo miss P!” He called waving to her with a lot of energy. Sniper never knew what he saw in her, she was nothing special and even if she was she never gave him the time of day. Firstly she was married to her work, all he did was work all day and night it’s a miracle she's still standing with one day off a year. On top of that, she didn’t even look in his direction most days. He was like a clueless puppy that followed her around everywhere.
“What does that lad even see in ‘er?” Demo questioned quietly enough to where nobody but Sniper and Soldier could hear. “I don’t know but it's really ticking me off,” Sniper muttered his grip on his coffee mug tightening. Miss Pauling finally reached them with a clipboard in her hands
“Alright everyone gather around please.” She called out to the group and everyone diverted their attention to her “So good job on today's meeting first off.” The soldier gave out an energetic cheer in response. “We only have 2 more weeks till winter break and you are all expected to fill out these forms stating where you will be residing for the time.” She said holding up a couple of papers.
“I will be back in a week to collect them so please have them ready, any questions?” She asked, nobody said anything so she placed the papers on the table and began to walk away “Wait!” Scout called out rushing over to her “Yes Scout?” She asked looking slightly bothered by him “Hey miss P, uh look will ya be busy this break I was wondering if-” He began to speak but she cut him off not wanting to hear it
“Yeah, I’m gonna be pretty busy.” She said just trying to get out of there and back to work “Oh right. Alright later” He mumbled a bit defeated and walked back to the couch plopping down next to Sniper “Man why won’t she just give me a chance? I’m a smart guy, handsome, hard-working! I’m the whole package man!” He complained to Sniper which he did every time she turned him down.
“Sure, and super bad at taking hints.” Sniper shot back which shocked everyone in earshot of their conversation “What?” Scout asked his voice a bit shaky. “Nothing,” Sniper mumbled quickly sitting up and walking out the room. Scout sat there shocked for a moment not understanding what actually happened “Should I go after him?” He asked Demoman “Nah lad, I think you'd just make it worse. Give ‘em some space” Demo said taking a swig of his flask
“But what did I do- I usually vent to him about Miss P and he doesn’t seem upset?” He questioned just really worried, he didn’t mean to upset Sniper “ ‘es jealous it’ll pass,” Engineer said nonchalantly while walking past him which was followed by a lot of voices agreeing “Huh? Jealous of what??” Scout asked jumping up and looking around the room confused “Nothing just relax, it’ll be fine” Demo said chuckling a bit at Scout's cluelessness.

Chapter Text
“Sniper. What is your problem.” Spy said, uncloaking himself as he walked up behind the sniper “You can't just expect the boy to know your feelings just like that. He’s not as bright as the rest of us.” Spy said leaning on the wall and lighting a cigarette
“I know” Sniper mumbled pacing back and forth down the hall. “But like how do I know if I even really like him, I mean yeah, he's cute, funny, energetic-”
“Keep it in your pants bushman, That's still my son.” Spy warned glaring at the other man. “But obviously if you are asking this question you must like him a little, and based on how you spoke about him I would believe you actually are in love,” Spy said, blowing a puff of smoke into the air.
“I guess you're right. I need to stop being so jealous, we aren't even a thing.” he said softly “Smartest thing you've said this whole conversation” replied the Spy smiling cheekily
The Aussie rolled his eyes in response “But what do I do?? It's not that easy to just get over my stupid crush.” he complained “Do you want my advice from scout dad or your teammate? Because if you wanted from Dad me I'd say forget about it and stay away from him. You're nothing but unnecessary trouble he doesn't need.”
Another smoke cloud blew from Spy's mouth. “But if you insist on this I'd say just tell him. It seems to be causing more bad than good. Or just tell him you don't wanna hear anything about that dial tone woman.” Spy recommend
It was pretty obvious their friendship lacked any proper boundaries which they needed for a healthy relationship but, that was not any of his business.

A few weeks later Miss Pauling came back to collect everyone's winter break forms, this time oddly enough Scout didn't attempt to hit on her which shocked everyone, Sniper was pretty happy about it though.
“So Scout, where are you going for the break?” Sniper asked. They were sitting together on the couch just thinking about something to do.
“Going to see my mom! I'm excited I miss her so much! What about you?” he asked, looking over at the Australian with a big smile on his face.”Going to Australia, visiting my folks.” Sniper replied also turning to look at scout
“Get a room you two! Quit making googly eyes at each other !” Demoman yelled from across the room causing both men to look away from
blushing.
Demoman and Soldier were having a field day, laughing at the pair. It was amusing how they never saw how in love they were, it was like waiting for an egg to hatch.
“Well uh yeah, hope you have fun with your mum,” Sniper said, his face bright red. “You too, also a random question but do you mind helping me pack my bag? I know we leave next week but I'm not all that good with packing.” Scout asked with a nervous smile
“Oh! Yeah sure, we can go ahead and do it now if you want to?” Sniper agreed standing up ready to get out of the room, there were too many eyes on him for his liking
Scout took Sniper to his room, a Tom Jones record playing as they walked in. Scout's room was a mess, not too much trash just lying around but still random items thrown wherever.
“So here is my suitcase!” the scout said holding up a plain small red suitcase “It's only supposed to hold a few outfits since I have some stuff at my mom's! And over there are the clothes I am taking “ he pointed towards a pile of clothes in the middle of the room
It was pretty simple work “Alright, I'll work on the clothes you get cleaning up the rest of the room.” Sniper said he couldn't stand to let Scout stay in this mess.
Sniper folded the clothes up tightly, everything fitting perfectly with a little extra space for gifts. Meanwhile, the scout had made good progress, most of the room was clean although there were times when he got off focus and the Sniper had to yell at him to keep cleaning
Eventually, it was done. The room was spotless and the suitcase was packed. “Thanks so much for helping Snipes, you're a lifesaver!” Scout said, hugging him and he was hugged back for the first time
“Thought you weren't much of a hugger?” Scout questioned a smug smile on his face as he looked up at the taller man
Sniper blushed his face a bright red looking away from the scout. Their faces were so close almost as if they were gonna kiss. It took everything in him not to just smash their lips together.

It was now Friday and the mercenaries were all packed up ready to be flown out to their respective locations for the winter break. They were outside the airport and in line to be given their flight information and tickets by Miss Pauling. Most were leaving in a few hours so they had to wait a while lines.
“I don't know why but I'm nervous.” said the Sniper looking over at Scout trying to get over the awkward atmosphere.
“Why? You've flown before right?” asked the smaller of the two, he'd also been nervous but for a different reason, having to see Spy at work and home wasn't something he was excited about.
“Seeing my family after such a long time means they're gonna ask uncomfortable questions like when will I quit my job or, when will you bring a girl home?” Sniper explained “I haven't even told ‘em I ain't into girls, worried about how they'll react.” he added not even realizing he just came out to Scout.
“You're gay?” Scout was a little shocked, he didn't take Sniper as the type. For some reason hearing that made Scout happy deep down but he wasn't sure why.
“Oh, er yeah I am.” Sniper looked away, his cheeks burning. Did he just say that out loud?? “I mean there's nothing wrong with that!!” Scout quickly shot up thinking Sniper took his shocked expression as homophobia
“I was just wondering I never knew!” he added a sympathetic smile on his face. Before Sniper got a chance to respond Scout's name was called and he had to go up and get his ticket
“Bye, snipes! See you when we get back!!” Scout called out waving goodbye before running off to his plane. Sniper gave a little wave watching him walk off and it hurt, he didn't want to be away from Scout but he had nowhere else to go. He couldn't just catch that flight to Boston too.
Chapter 3: What is Love

Fun fact I actually wrote this chapter first out of all of them! I thought it was kind a weird place to start so I pushed it back a bit
Chapter Text
Sniper laid in bed staring up at the ceiling. He was at his parent's house on a break from work and was beginning to think. Thinking was never good for him, he always realized something he never thought about before and it was usually something bad.
Mick, (or Micky as his mother liked to call him) loved his job. He was great at it but his mom couldn't care less. She was worried about it, she tended to worry way more than she needed to.
His dad, on the other hand, didn't worry enough, he couldn't care less about what happened to Mick, he was just disappointed with the job he got. His father never believed it was a real job, he was never going to hear the end of that
He didn't want to be home but it was home or in the freezing camper for the winter so he took his chances. A knock came on his door snapping Mick out of his thoughts
“Dinner ready hon” his mom's frail voice called from behind the door “Yeah, comin' mum,” he said loud enough for her to hear.
He rolled out of bed and walked to his door taking a deep breath before walking out of his childhood room, which was never changed, and down the Hall to the dining room
“Sit Micky, I'll get your food” his mom insisted “Nah let the boy get his food, the least ‘e could do after not ‘avin a decent career!” his father shouted back. Mick didn't respond and sat down his mom brought over everyone's plates and sat down to eat
“So Micky, seein’ any sheilas at your job?” asked his mom who had barely begun to eat her smaller portion of food “Hmm, erm yeah no..” he replied softly...
Mick never really got around to telling his parents he wasn't all that into girls. I mean his father was mad about a job, imagine finding out he's gay. He'd tell them one day.
“Another thing ya can't do right, what was the point of havin’ a son I could've gotten a daughter more useful than this bloke” his dad interjected “Wouldn't be surprised if you were gay the way women avoid ya.” he joked which just make Mick's face turn a bright pink
“Are ya? It's ok if you are Micky it would just be nice to know” quickly added his mom probably trying to make him more comfortable with the joke
Sniper rubbed the back of his neck, something he tended to do when nervous “Um, I mean-” he started but was interrupted “See I told ya, that's why he never brought girls home as a kid, you just thought people didn't like him” replied his father's joyous voice said
“So are you fancyin’ any blokes at work?” She repeated her question, seeming to expect an actual answer. Sniper signed “It's complicated. Don't know if I like the guy.” he answered plainly
“What's his name, is he cute!” quickly asked his mom, seemingly excited about it. “ ‘is named Jeremy, he's a runner, almost my height. Uh blue eyes brown hair, he's loud and talks way too much for ‘his own good. Around my age a little younger, I think.” he explained fiddling with his hands
“He sounds so cute!! When do we get to meet him!!” she questioned back “We ain't even official yet ma! He doesn't even know I like ‘im, plus he likes this girl I think.” snipes explained further.
Sometimes he just wants to grab Scout by the collar and kiss him until he knows how in love he is, but he's too nervous to do that. He's too nervous to even hang out with him, what if he lets it slip that he’s in love with him and it ends their friendship!? He needed to stop thinking like this, it was stressing him out.
“I'm gonna go lay down, ain’t all that hungry.” the sniper said quickly, pushing his food away a bit “Oh ok dear, let me know if you need anything.” His mom chimed in watching him walk away, his father, surprisingly, not saying anything.

Snipes was lying in bed thinking about Scout again. ‘Maybe I should call ‘em” he thought. He got up and began to pace weighing his options. It had been a few days since he told his parents about his crush and he couldn't get Scout out of his mind.
Sniper walked over to the phone in his room picking it up and starting to dial his number. He vaguely remembered it, it was given to him months ago and the scout said “Call me if you ever just need someone.”
he pressed in the last numbers letting it ring. It rang a few times before someone picked up the line “Hello?” a woman's voice said from behind the phone
“Uh hello, sorry I think I have the wrong number,” Sniper said quickly about to hang up but she spoke again “Who are you looking for darling?” the woman asked trying to help
“A guy named Jeremy'' sniper replied causally, why was he even telling her “tall, brown hair blue eyes?” she questioned. Sniper was a little weirded out but said “Um yeah”
“One second please?” there was silence then distant yelling in the background then a familiar voice came through “Yo, Jeremy speaking,” Scout said not knowing who could be calling “Hey mate, it's me,” Sniper said not knowing why he expected scout to know him by his voice.
He was pleasantly shocked when Scout did indeed recognize his voice “Snipes man hey! I forgot I gave you my mom's number. What’s up” Scout yelled excited to hear from him. He tended to shout when he was excited or happy it was just a habit he developed.
“Hey just callin’ the check on ya mate, been lonely ‘ere you’re kinda my only friend on the team,” Mick said leaning against the wall “Well sure we can talk! Things have been good. Ma’s here and some of my brothers. Sadly Spy’s here for a few days so that sucks as usual.” He ranted knowing when the sniper wanted to call he wanted to hear him rant.
“We’ve had awesome food lately, I’ve missed Mom's cooking! We’ve been to many stores to shop and we just decorated for Christmas! Do y’all celebrate Christmas in Australia? Are ya even Christian?” scout began talking then slowly evolved into questions.
“We have it ‘ere but my folks don't really celebrate anything, we’ve never done holidays like that.” Mick explained “But I would love to see how you'll celebrate it over there” He added a slight chuckle coming from his mouth
“I’ll take some photos to show you! Maybe you can be my plus one next year!” Scout replied. If he was being honest he had been doing a lot of thinking and realized he was into Sniper. It had been a feeling that he only came about recently but he knew it was real. He loved Miss Pauling, who never even gave him the time of day, but Sniper was different.
He cared about even the dumbest things Scout had to say. He would listen for hours about Scout's past and days, he knew more about him than his mother for crying out loud, but he couldn’t be gay. He loved boobs and hot babes in the magazines he had stored up, but still, his feelings for Sniper were always present.
No matter what sniper was always in the back of his mind “Hey Scout sorry I gotta go! Mum needs help in the kitchen” Sniper called interrupting his chain of thoughts ‘Oh ok no problem buddy, call me later then! Bye!” Scout replied quickly embarrassed “k talk to ya later roo, Love ya.” sniper replied not thinking about his words before hanging up the phone
‘WHAT!! Love? Like love love???’ scouts thoughts raced. Did he mean to say that, or was it just habit? Was he being crazy? Did he hallucinate that? What in the world just happened??? “Scout.” a French voice called out to him, breaking his racing mind.
“What is wrong with you boy, why do you look like that?” Spy questioned “I uh, can we talk about something spy” Scout asked rubbing his neck “Hm. Sure, and you can call me my name, it's-” he started but was interrupted “Yeah no thanks, Spys easier.” Scout protested before skipping to the table so they could chat.
After a bit of Scout explaining the situation “So wait... You like HIM??” Spy exclaimed shocked “Out of all the men on our team, the bushman?? I expected more from you.” Spy questioned “All the guys are old enough to be my dad! I ain't got that many options.” Scout responded glaring at Spy's rude comment
“He’s really sweet, and he listens to me!” Scout argued “Yeah right” Spy mumbled Scout just shooting him another glare.
“Look, I know you may think he's not a great guy but I'm really into him and I just need advice,” Scout mumbled looking at his fer
“Ok fine. If you really wanna know what he thinks of you, you need to get closer to him and try to maybe drop hits, show subtle interest in him he should get the hint.” Spy said before getting up, he drew a cigarette from his coat and lit it
“Just don't rush into this,” he said before going outside for a smoke. Scout's mom hated it when Spy smoked inside, she said it left a smell which Scout agreed on.
“Oh Jeremy, I can't believe you never told me you were interested in this guy!” His mom sang skipping around the corner. She was most likely spying on their conversation which was normal for her.
“Tell me what you like about him, maybe we can figure it out hon” she assured Scout, patting his back before taking the seat Spy sat in.
“He's sweet, he's one of the only guys there that treats me like a real friend. We spend a lot of time around each other and he doesn't act annoyed when I get loud and excited over small crap.” Scout began listing basic things.
“Plus he's really cute sometimes. He just does random stuff that makes me blush and it ain't even on purpose. Everything he does just gets a reaction outa me, I'll blush or laugh or something. I'm just happy around him.” he explained
“Well Jer, to me it seems like you're into him. If it were just the first part you were feeling then I'd say maybe you just think you like him because he's acting like a good friend but after the second part I think this is a real thing you're feeling.” His mom replied
“But like your father, maybe you should just wait a bit to tell him. Just be sure he feels the same way and if he doesn't that's perfectly fine,” she added, patting his back again before kissing his cheek and walking off to the kitchen
“I'm gonna make dinner. Go get cleaned up.” she called from the kitchen “Ok, thanks ma” Scout replied hopping out of his seat and down the hall to their bathroom
Chapter 4: Back from Break
Summary:
Everyone is back from Christmas break and Sniper gives Scout a little gift.
Chapter Text
“You guys!!” Scout called to Engie and Pyro who were just chatting “Glad to see you both, how was your break?” He was glad to be back with his friends. “Hey there Scout, our break was pretty great. Me and Pyro here just relaxed at home with ma’ wife.” Engie said with a smile on his face. Pyro nodded along with him.
“How was your break scout?” Pyro signed. Scout had learned a lot of sign language from Pyro and Engineer on their days off. He thought knowing it would better strengthen his relationship with Pyro so they could communicate and it has been.
They’ve hung out more one-on-one and Scout actually learned a lot about Pyro, or as much as they would tell. Scout suspected there was more he wasn’t being told but it wasn’t his business so he didn’t pry. He just knew Pyro was close with Engie and they tended to spend holidays together since Pyro had no living family.
The Engineer and his wife have basically adopted Pyro into their family and it made them feel great, actually having some people to call family. “Yeah I just kinda hung around my Ma and her boyfriend the whole time, did a ton of shopping, and found a ton of Tom Jones merch for my collection!” Scout explained” He didn’t like telling people Spy was actually his dad or even dating his mother. He wanted nothing to do with that Frenchman.
“That’s great son! Glad ya got something out of it. Also, I meant to let ya know. Sniper was lookin for ya. He said If we saw ya to tell you meet him by his camper out back. Never said what for or nothing tho.” He explained pointing Scout in the direction to go.
“Oh ok thanks hard hat, see ya guys!” Scout replied waving to the two as he jogged off to Sniper's van. He ran a good distance which made him happy and a little sweaty but he’d shower after he spoke with Sniper, it might be important.
“Yo Snipes! Open up man it’s chilly out here!” Scout called out, banging on the door of the van after getting no response from a simple knock. “Yea, comin’ mate,” Snipes said, Scout could hear rustling in the van then the door flung open almost hitting Scout. Before he knew he was inside the van warming up.
“Hey! How was your break man!’ Scout beamed hugging Sniper his hands around his neck. “It was good, ain’t do much at all. Speakin’ of break me and my mom got ya’ some stuff.” He replied taking out a gift box. Scout’s face lit up when he saw it and quickly opened the box. Inside was a knitted red sweater with “scout” printed on the front. There was also a Boston Red Sox cap in there with a matching jersey.
“DUDE OMG?!” Scout cheered. He was now jumping around the camper ecstatic about his gifts. He grabbed Sniper and pulled him into a big hug squeezing all the air out of him “Thank you so much, man! This is like the coolest thing I’ve ever been given!’ Scout yelled
“I’m glad you like it. Had no clue what size to get you so I just got you a small. I can take it back if it doesn’t fit. Me and my mom knitted you the jumper it's about a medium so I hope at least one of them fits” Sniper explained rubbing his neck.
“Even if it doesn’t I’ll be wearing it with pride knowing it was a gift from you!” Scout exclaimed excited about his new clothes. His wardrobe was lacking, he wore a lot of the same clothes over and over again so he knew stuff was appreciated.
“I'm sorry I didn’t get you something I didn’t know I was meant to,” Scout said worried Sniper would hate him for it. “No, No it's all good mate. Just wanted to say thanks for being my friend even tho I’m not much of a talker, that usually puts people off ya know” He tried to assure him Scout felt horrible.
“How’s about I take you out somewhere on our next break from work? It would be my treat” Scout said trying to compromise “Only if you’re sure.” Sniper replied not sure if he was really supposed to accept the offer
‘Yes, I am! It’s a date then!” He cheered but blushed when he realized what he said “I uh, well I don't mean like-” He tried to explain but was too embarrassed to put together sentences. “Don’t worry mate I gotcha.” Replied the sniper kinda giggling at Scout's mistake. However, in the back of his mind, he did wish it was an actual date.
“Well uh, I think I'm gonna start getting ready for bed. Thanks for the gifts man they’re awesome.” Scout said rubbing his neck and looking down towards his feet. “Oh uh, right. Good night mate.” Sniper mumbled blushing too.
Scout rushed off slamming the door behind him “Crap.” he mumbled. He took his cap off and pressed it against his chest. “I’m so stupid.” He mumbled slamming his cap onto the ground. He picked it up and ran off to his room swiftly.
Scout slammed his door and locked it rushing over to the record player sitting in the corner of his room He began searching through his bin of records and finally landed on one. A Tom Jones record, Scout's favorite album, “Along Came Jones.” He placed it on the plate and pressed the on switch dropping the needle down.
Once done with that he swiftly changed from his uniform and into some pajamas. Scout laid down staring up at the ceiling. ‘Maybe I should just tell ‘em, rip the bandaid right off. What’s the worst that could happen.’ he thought, but he knew how horrible it could go so he needed to do it right. Suddenly a light bulb went off in his head.
Maybe a romantic date at one of his favorite spots in town, the arcade! No that's dumb, Sniper is not the kind of guy who wants to be asked out in an arcade he was too classy. Maybe a dinner date at that Italian place near the park, then after they could go on a walk! Yeah, that sounds amazing! He then soon drifted off to sleep with the sound of Tom Jones softly fading in the distance

The next morning!!
“Snipes! Get the hell up, man!” A loud voice accompanied by knocking came for the camper door waking up the Australian man inside ‘Bloody hell” He mumbled peeling his body off the bed and over to the door. “What’ He asked not even opening his eyes to look at Scout knowing the harsh sun would blink him
“Get dressed man! We’ve got work today remember we’re all waiting on you!” Scout explained pushing his way into the camper and sitting at Sniper's table which he got ready “How come you always come wake me? You don’t have anything better to be doing?” Sniper questioned softly, pulling his vest over his red button-up shirt.
“Well yeah, I do but you’re my friend, I’d want my friends to wake me if I overslept too!” Friend. The word rang through Sniper's head. It hurt to hear but he needed to get used to it, the two were way too different to ever be together. Even though he knew that it still hurt like hell, he wished for nothing but to be with the Bostantian forever
“Did you hear me?” Scout’s voice pierced through Sniper's mind snapping his back into reality. “Huh, sorry no.” He replied looking up from the sink “I said we should get going before they take all the breakfast!” Scout answered. “Oh right. Sure come on.” Sniper mumbled in reply grabbing his hat before walking out with Scout. He locked the door and then turned back noticing Scout was staring
“Ya, good mate? You’re staring again..” Sniper asked, looking away nervously. He’d caught Scout staring at him a few times and it always made him feel a little self-conscious. What if he had something on his face or he looked weird?
“Oh! Uh sorry dude.” the scout mumbled turning and quickly walking towards the dining hall. Sniper caught up to him and they walked in silence for a long while not talking until they reached the dining hall. All the other mercenaries were there enjoying their breakfast...Pyro waved the two over, they had saved the pair some seats as well as getting their share of food.
“Aw thanks, buddy! That was super sweet of you!” Scout said, taking his seat and hugging Pyro tightly.
“Thanks, Pyro, means a lot mate,” Sniper said lifting his hat to get a better look at them
Pyro signed something in response which Snipe couldn't entirely make out but seemed to fluster the Scout
“Hush! It ain't even like that!” Objected the Scout his cheeks red as he swatted away Pyro's hands. Engineer and Medic had also begun laughing seeming to catch what was said
“Wot?” asked the Aussie very confused about why everyone was suddenly laughing “Well, firebug said-” “No!! Don't tell him!” Scout interrupted the Engineer shattering any hope Sniper had of actually understanding
He just kept eating the food, not bothering to question it further. Scout and Pyro continued to talk throughout breakfast but that was ok. Sniper enjoyed seeing Scout happy and talking to people
“Come on lads! Missions startin’ soon!” A Scottish accent called out from the hall and everyone quickly got up and rushed to the changing rooms, they'd clean up after they fought.
The battle went well. They ended up winning easily. Nobody was taking the battle seriously and it went by very slowly. They all would probably get in trouble with the administrator but nobody cared.
Everyone had gathered back up in the dining hall, some finishing their food while others told stories of their vacations.
"Da, me and doktor went to Russia to visit family. I will share photos later" heavy said a small smile lifting in the corner of his mouth. Medic was practically jumping out of his seat so excited to tell stories of the trip
"It vas so beautiful! It vas very snowy und most of the shops were closed but ve still had a great time doing what we could with the veather and all!!" He boasted smiling proudly "Vhat about you Herr engineer, vhat did you and Pyro do?" he asked
"Well me and Pyro mostly stayed in with my wife. We did a lot of baking and whatnot. We also saw tons of light shows, everyone decorated a bunch which made the town look great!" Engine explained"Oh and my wife got a cat! Pyro loved it, ain't that right py?" Pyro shot up at the mention of the pet
They nodded enthusiastically, Pyro loved pets. Just then Scout came skipping up to the group "Hey guys! Still, telling stories? If so wanna hear bout my break?" Sniper looked up from the book he was reading interested in what he had to say.
"Sure son! Go ahead and tell us" Engine responded smiling at the young Boston boy
"Well, me and my mom hosted this big family dinner at her place! All my brothers came and brought their kids so it was good to see them all. We had a big feast and opened gifts, we also watched a ton of Christmas movies!!" Scout boasted about his vacation obviously enjoying it a lot
"What about you Snipes? Do anything fun?" The sudden calling of his name startled him a bit but relaxed as he realized what Scout asked
He wasn't much of a storyteller but since Scout asked he didn't mind telling "Well we didn't do much since my folks don't celebrate it. But me and my mum cooked and cleaned a ton. Oh and my dad drove to the market and did a little shopping, I got a snow globe for my collection." As he spoke it was as if time slowed down. All Scout could focus on was Sniper, he had never before realized how beautiful he was. His mullet looked as if it had been freshly clipped, his eyes shined bright and he spoke he seemed very excited to be telling the story. Now that he was smiling Scout noticed his slight canines poking out, he'd never noticed that since Sniper wasn't big on smiling.
"Scout?" Sniper called snapping him out of his daydream "Are you coming, we're gonna watch a movie?" Sniper asked now standing up. The once full table was now empty everyone seeming to have moved to the common room.
"Oh sorry! I'm coming!" he said following Sniper as they left the dining hall and went into the room all the other mercs were gathered in. They took their seats next to Heavy and Medic who were snuggled up together under a blanket. Medic's head rested and Heavys shoulder and Heavys rested on his.
Sniper would kill to have what they had with Scout but he'd never go for a guy like him. He looked old and was always alone, he barely even spoke to anyone it was a miracle he and Scout actually became friends.
The engineer was standing up next to the television hooking up the VHS player. He grabbed the tape the team had previously decided on when Scout was daydreaming. Once the movie started and the lights were out Scout scooted closer to Sniper who instantly noticed and looked at him confused. Just then Scout laid his head on Sniper's shoulder.
It was a dream come true. The thing he just wished for came true. Sure, scout didn't mean it in the way Sniper took it but that didn't matter. This was the first time they were ever close like this and it was the best but Sniper tried to act as normal as possible only a small smile conveying his enjoyment for how the night was turning out.

Chapter Text
Today was the day, and finally, Scout and Sniper were going together for the outing that he had been promised. Sniper was currently in his van getting ready. Although he didn’t have many nice clothes or even clothes at all. He landed on a white T-shirt, some blue flare jeans, brown boots, and his usual hat and glasses. Wanting to make a good impression, he also shaved his stubble so his face was nice and smooth.
Usually, Sniper couldn’t care less what he looked like, but this outing seemed special. First, it was with Scout of all people and, in public which was the biggest thing, people would be seeing them together and couldn’t have them thinking he was some old guy creeping on Scout.
Suddenly there was a knock on his door, “Snipes! I'm here, are you ready?” Scout called from behind the door. They had agreed to meet his camper and walk from there to the bus station. They were originally going to his van but agreed it would be easier to just take the bus
He quickly sprayed on some cologne and grabbed his wallet and keys walking out of the van “Yeah, I’m ready. Got everything?” He asked while locking the door behind him
“Yep! I didn't bring much except some money” Scout replied, sniper only nodding as they began their walk to the bus stop. The bus was empty so they just sat in the back talking softly

Once they reached the town, Scout grabbed Sniper's hand and was pulling him towards a nice-looking restaurant. It wasn't a fancy one, but pretty nice compared to anything they’d eaten at the base.
“Hi folks, how can I help y'all?” The server said, smiling sweetly at them, she was an older lady with short, poorly chopped brown hair.
“Hi, reservation for Jeremy O’Connell” he replied smiling back at her as she checked the book “Oh yes I see you, right this way” Margret, as her name tag said, guided them to a booth next to the window.
“Your server will be right with you” she added, placing three menus in front of them, two food menus and a drink one
It was quiet for a while neither of them knew what to say but Sniper decided to speak up “So, Jeremy is it? Never thought I'd get to know your name.” he joked hoping it wouldn't upset Scout too much
“Oh! You're right, we don't even know each other's names even after how long we've been friends. Well yeah, that's my name, my friends used to tease me for it.” Scout replied smiling, still looking over the menu
“Really? I think it's cute” he said, not realizing what he said, “Is that so?” Jeremy muttered a devilish smile on his face “So what's your name mystery man?” he asked putting down the menu
Just then a woman walked up to the table, “Hello! I'm Lucy, I'll be your server today. Can I get you all started with any drinks or appetizers?” She asked, holding a notepad and pen.
“I'll have a Shirley Temple and some breadsticks,” Scout said smiling at the girl, noticing she was staring at Sniper which was odd.
“I'll just have a root beer,” Sniper said trying not to hold eye contact with the waitress who was staring
“O-okay, I'll bring that right out,” she said quickly leaving the table, “that was weird, think she likes you?” Jeremy joked giggling at Sniper's flustered face
“Probably, ain't never been stared at like that by someone who didn't.” Sniper replied “Anyway, yeah my name's Mick, Mick Mundy.” he could see Scout was obviously trying to hold back a laugh which made him want to laugh as well
They laughed about his name a little before the waitress returned “Alright sirs, here are your drinks.” she said placing 2 cups in front of them and the bread in the middle of the table. “ Are you both ready to order?” she asked not once, taking her eyes off Mick. They told her the order, Jeremy was not sure if she even heard him.
Honestly, Scout couldn't blame her. He would be lying if he said Sniper wasn't drop-dead gorgeous. Maybe not everyone's type, but he was hot.
“So, what brings you gentlemen to town?” Lucy asked, smiling shyly, “Just comin’ in for a break from work.” Sniper replied, taking a sip from the straw.
“Oh! That's nice, hey are you Australian? You have a nice accent” she complimented giggling softly to herself. ”yeah, moved ‘ere for work though” Sniper replied nodding along with himself' “That's sweet. Anyway I'll put that order in for you handsome” Lucy said rushing off with a wink
“She seems like a sweet girl,” Sniper said, glancing up at the Scout, who looked upset. He had more of a pained and unhappy look on his face. “ Are you alright?” he asked, taking a sip of his drink, “You seriously don't see that she’s flirting with you??”
He was taken aback by the sudden hostility in Jeremy’s tone, “I- No, I didn’t seem to notice… Even if she did, why would it matter?” Honesty, that was a good question. Why did it matter?? It wasn’t like they were dating, so why was he upset? It was quiet for a while, Jeremy himself wasn’t sure why it upset him. He didn’t like Sniper like that, so what's going on? “I don’t know, ok… I just-”
Then there she was again with their food. Surprisingly, she heard Scout’s order and brought it out. The meal was quiet, the tension between them so thick you could cut it with a knife. Once the check was brought out, she handed it to Mick a wink before scurrying away. Attached to the bill was a note reading “You're pretty cute, call me!!” attached with her phone number
“What’s that? Scout questions glancing up from his food to see him looking at some note “The sheila gave me ‘ere number.”
“You gonna call her?”
“What?”
“Are you going to call her?”
“Why would I??”
“I mean a pretty girl just gave you her number, you’re gonna pass up that chance??”
“I don’t like girls, I told you that at the airport..”
“.......Right.”
It was silent for a while, nobody daring to speak to not upset the other. “Why are you being so hostile all of a sudden?” Scout himself had a slight clue but he couldn’t tell him. This outing was making him realize more and more he had a crush.
“I can’t tell you that right now..” Scout replied “Jeremy, you can tell me if something is wrong. We’re friends after all.” That was the problem, he truly didn’t want to just be his friend. “That’s the problem.”
“What?
“Just forget it ok.” Was all Jeremy replied with before slamming down some cash on the table and rushing out.
This outing was already a disaster, why could things never work out the way he wanted?

Jeremy was sitting on a bench outside the restaurant. This was horrible, if this kept going this could ruin their friendships and things would just be worse for everyone. The sound of a bell, most likely coming from the door of the restaurant sounded.
“Jeremy” Great. Now they would need to talk things out. “You don’t have to be jealous because I got asked out mate, I'm sure any girl would love to ask you on a date” What?? Is that really what he thinks this is about? “That's not what I'm upset about.”
“Oh… Then what is it??”
“....”
“...you can tell me you know, I won’t judge you.” That's rich, he would feel some way if Jeremy was honest about what he felt. “Can we just get past this? I don’t want to talk about it anymore..”
“Ok... Well, can I tell you something? I like you, you know that right?” what is that supposed to mean? “Like me how?”
“Romantically..”
“....”
Was that meant to be funny? Was this all some sick joke, or maybe a nightmare? This can't be real. “I'm not kidding.” Of course, Sniper knew Scout was thinking that. They were just close like that.
“I think I have liked ya for a while. Maybe since we became friends, I tried not to think about it too much and doubted it but I couldn't anymore. I hope this doesn’t ruin our friendship or anything.”
So this wasn’t some weird joke. What was he meant to do? Well confess too obviously but how would that go? Would that mean they're together? Would they have to tell the others on the base? So many questions were running through his mind at once
“I like you too” He finally settled on it, it was true he couldn’t deny it anymore. He did truly love Sniper, there was no getting around the subject now.
“Do you want a relationship or something? We don’t gotta go so fast or nothin’.
“I mean sure, it’d probably be good if he took it slow. For my sake I mean, I’ve never been with a guy. You probably have a ton of experience.” Scout replied fiddling with his hands in his lap
“Nah, I’ve never had a boyfriend. Or a girlfriend.”
“You’re joking right?” Scout was now looking at him, extremely shocked by that. He always took Sniper as a lady-killer or man-killer in his case.
“Nope, I’m serious. I was never out about my sexuality to anyone. The gay kids at my school were made fun of and I just wanted to avoid the public eye mostly.”
“Woah dude, that makes me feel way better about my experiences.”
“YOU had a girlfriend?”
“Hey! What's that supposed to mean!! The ladies totally love me! And for your information, yes I have.” Scout was now standing and talking a bit too loudly.
“Is that really what you want to be saying to your first boyfriend?” Sniper asked now standing too. “Come on, let's go to the arcade.” He pointed over to the shop down the road, some people were just walking out
“Only if you carry me, Micky” Scout replied with a wink which made Sniper blush
“No shoot. And don’t call me that you sound like my ma”
“YOUR MOM CALLS YOU MICKY?? THATS HILARIOUS!” but Sniper was already walking away
Chapter Text
The arcade was shockingly huge. There were a ton of games that the two happily played. They first got some coins spending about 35 dollars on them which were split equally between the two, They first went off to play the single-player games
After about an hour or so they met up and played some multiplayer games like shooters, racing, things of that sort.
They must have spent hours in the arcade because when they finally left the sun was setting. They ran over to the bus stop hoping they didn’t miss the last bus and luckily they didn’t.
The bus ride was quiet, both too tired to talk about anything. Once they were back at the base Sniper walked Scout over to his room, they hugged and wished each other goodnight. But before Sniper could walk off he felt a tug on his shirt.
He turned back to look at Scout, but before he could say anything Scout pulled him in for a kiss. It may have been fast, especially since they agreed to take it slow but Sniper was glad that it happened. His mouth tasted like a mix of different kinds of candy and Bonk
Once they broke apart the sound of clapping could be heard across the hall. They looked up in unison to see Pyro and Engineer standing there looking at them. The engineer was smiling while Pyro was clapping and jumping up and down with joy.
Sniper looked back at Scout flashing him a quick flustered smile before nodding and walking off to his camper.
Perhaps confessing was the right choice.
