Unexpected proposal

Summary:

“Suguru. Let’s get married.”

Or that one time when Geto was having breakfast, minding his own business, and Gojo casually proposed to him.

Notes:

Hi theeere! Here we go again for a super late contribution to that SatoSugu week (2021, oh my god, how did time fly by so quickly????)
This piece is the last one I wrote at that time, and I think it completes the series - really, this is everything I wanted for Geto and Gojo ♥ I've just finished writing a cute spring fanfic for a friend; it's about Choso and Yuuji going for a hanami picnic, and it's also set in the same alternate universe that isn't canon-compliant because I just want everyone to be HAPPY as they DESERVE!! So I may translate it to English and make it a four seasons mini-series, with Joy to the World!
As always, thank you SO SO MUCH for being here and reading my delusions, I love you and hope you have a good time ♥

Work Text:

“Suguru. Let’s get married.”

Suguru chokes on his coffee.

“Come again?”

Satoru’s face is dead-serious as he stares at him over his bowl of rainbow cereals.

“You heard. Let’s get married.”

Suguru puts his cup of coffee down in an attempt to get some of his composure back. He fails eminently.

“Satoru. What the fuck now?”

Satoru shrugs and leans toward him. Sunshine pours through the half-open window, highlighting his snowy hair and fair complexion, splattering the table between them. He looks even more gorgeous than he usually does.

“You don’t wanna?”

His blue eyes are intent, specks of white slowly coiling in their depths like scarce clouds in the summer sky. Suguru blinks uncertainly.

“It’s not that I don’t want to.”

“Then what?”

Suguru sighs heavily and leans back in his chair.

“You want the long answer or the short one?”

Satoru shrugs.

“I just want a yes.”

“No.”

“Wrong answer, try again.”

“Satoru-”

There’s so much to say he doesn’t even know where to start. Satoru is weirdly silent, staring at him instead of annoying him into agreement like he usually would. He really is serious, huh… Suguru sighs again.

“Why so suddenly?”

“Why not?” Satoru shrugs. “I’ve been thinking about it for a while, now.”

“Is it your biological clock or something?” Suguru gestures vaguely. “You never cared about these things.”

About family.

“But you do.”

Suguru flinches.

“Plus,” Satoru continues matter-of-factly, “it would annoy the hell out of the elders.”

Suguru chuckles softly, ignoring the feeling that stirs in his gut.

“Ah, of course. I should’ve known there was more to it than my natural charm.”

Satoru grins.

“Your charm makes me wanna lock you down in my basement, but I’ve been told marriage is more socially acceptable.”

“You’re a freak.” Suguru sighs, shaking his head.

“That’s why you love me.”

“Touché.”

Suguru chuckles and takes a sip of coffee. This is ridiculous.

“Still. I can’t accept.”

“What?!” Satoru looks like he didn’t expect more resistance. “Why not?!”

“Gay marriage is not legal.”

Yet. Satoru pulls a face at him.

Urgh. Who cares about administration?”

“I do.”

“You’re literally a criminal, Suguru.”

“And you’re the head of house Gojo. What would that make us?”

“The most best looking couple at family meetings, that’s what. Everyone will be livid at how gorgeous we are.”

“Too bad, I am not going with you to family meetings.”

“That’s cruel, Suguru. You can’t let your husband down when he needs you the most.”

Suguru snorts. Satoru stretches his legs, brushing their knees together. His peculiar eyes glint in the morning light; hesitation is not like him. Suguru sighs again.

“Whatever is still on your mind, just say it.”

Satoru smiles and reaches out to grab something on the counter behind him; he then drops a couple of rings on the breakfast table. Silence stretches between them as Suguru stares at the golden bands shimmering in the summer sun. After a moment, he shakes his head and looks at Satoru.

“You’re serious about putting a ring on me, aren’t you?”

“I’m a grown man, Suguru. I’m all about respectability, now.”

Suguru should snort, but he doesn’t. He leans forward, smirking.

“Respectable yet crazy enough to enter a binding vow with a mass murderer?”

“In sickness and in health, and until death do us part. Is it too respectable for you, Suguru? You scared?”

Satoru’s eyes glint mischievously just like they did, ten years ago. Suguru laughs and puts on one of the rings.

“I’ll show you what respectable really means.”

Satoru puts on the second ring, endorsing his part of the binding vow, and teleports on Suguru’s lap because he’s a show-off.

“Keep the thought for when we’re old and show me some debauchery instead!”

Breakfast will have to wait.
