He loved her; that much was obvious. But he wouldn’t dare cross that line. He would never risk ruining their friendship over something trivial like feelings. It was almost her birthday. And every year, he tried to do something special for her. Last year, he took her on a cruise; the year before that, he took her to Alaska to see the northern lights.
But this year, he wanted to do something small. He wasn’t sure if he could pull it off. Weeks were spent on the phone planning this event. Gordon had even agreed to rally up some ideas.
Finally, the day arrived, and he took Harley out to lunch and spent the rest of the evening at the park. It wasn’t a fancy gesture, but he could see in her eyes how much she appreciated the gift. Sometimes, all life needs is a calm storm.
“Harley,” Bruce pointed upwards to the sky, and her jaw dropped in surprise. Sitting on a branch nearby was a tiny white dove. She reached out for it carefully, and the animal stepped into her waiting palm.
“Bruce, look!” She whispered carefully, not wanting to startle the beautiful creature delicately perched on her hand.
Bruce tugged at her hand, and she looked up just before a barrage of colourful fireworks lighting up the night sky. A look of amazement filled her face as the dove flew away at the sound. “Bruce-“
