Chapter Text
dying was rather.. weird, for a lack of better words to describe it
In most cases dying sounds painful, you get hurt in some way or another and then your body stops functioning completely. the only remains are a sack of rotting meat and a soul
again, in most cases. monsters worked differently,
When a monster dies, dust is the only thing that remains; there are also boss monsters which-.. we are going too deep into details, are we not?
dying is painful, and when you die your soul goes away eventually too.
but what if it wasn’t like that always?
perhaps, in some sort of..special situation, things end up differently
What happens to those who don’t go exactly that way?
What about those who climbed mt. ebott? the children whose souls have no rest whatsoever.
..what about the one who has no soul at all?
Clover woke up, their eyes being met with the shining light of… a sunset.
huh.
Feeling a light breeze coming from..they were not sure, actually, they felt dizzy and confused. Clover was..
where were they?...Carefully as to not trip, the kid stood up slowly, helping themselves up, Clover looked in awe at the scenery that laid upon them:
a field, filled to the brim with flowers with what looked like an endless lagoon that was so still, clover swore it would not move even if they touched it, and the sky was a beautiful gradient of red and violet as the sun never seemed to fully set, but it was dark enough that some stars could be seen
so.. serene.
They felt like crying, they had never felt so much peace probably in their entire life, and after all the emotional turmoil they had gone through the last few hours of their existence, this was definitely the perfect place to rest.
“ah..” a quiet realization hit them at that very moment, “I died. didn’t I?” they left a small, tired chuckle as they laid down in the field of colorful flowers, staring at the violet sky filled with stars.. Clover stayed in silence, mourning.
mourning what could’ve been, how things could’ve ended differently had they made other choices, maybe if humanity was different they could’ve lived a normal life and die when they were actually ready.
They had accomplished so much, they got so far, befriended so many people and hopefully, will save so many lives with their sacrifice.. oh their sacrifice.
What if another human never fell?
the thought crossed their mind and lit up their head like gunpowder. What if a human never fell again? What if for some cursed reason they were the last one? then they made all their friends mourn for a cause that will never see a resolution? or even worse,
What if another human falls? and what if they don’t have good intentions like they had?
gosh, what if they killed their friends? or what if their friends don’t even get to see the surface anyway?!
Clover sat up again, hugging their knees rocking back and forth. Maybe they didn’t think this through correctly..
they frowned, “Of course I did think this through, I was gonna die anyway!” they spoke, lifting their arms in the air, “who would be dumb enough to do something as reckless as that without planning first?..” they thought to themselves.
“who are you?.”
what.
Clover let out a yelp in surprise as they turned around, searching for the mysterious voice that had (luckily) stopped their spiraling
it did not take them long as said individual was approaching them at an alarming pace “hey you weirdo! what do you think you’re doing in this place?” they spoke with a harsh tone. Clover was completely left without words as the human stood in front of them.
shoulder length dark brown hair, pink rosy cheeks and a sharp look in their eyes, they were wearing a green sweater with a single yellow stripe, iconic if you asked clover.
Funnily enough, it reminded them of Flowey..as crazy of a stretch that could be.
What catched Clover’s attention the most, however, was the heart shaped locket they carried around their neck,
it had a delta rune symbol engraved on it
Was this one of the kids on the missing posters? but Clover didn’t recognize them at all-
“snap out of it!” the human shouted, “I cannot believe how unbelievably rude you are being! not that I would expect otherwise, of course. After all, you are human.” their tone switched to one more cold, almost condescending.
“uhm..” Clover struggled,
“sorry, uh.. I’m sorry for staring I uh-” no words were enough to even begin to explain the confusion they were feeling.
They took a deep breath,
Come on Clover, it can’t be that hard! just be polite, don’t say anything dumb, they thought.
“you..are a human.” Clover deadpanned them, the human stared down at them with disgust, but quickly went back to their neutral, seemingly calm face and said:
“call me that again and I will actually just kill you”
“what..?” Clover was… confused, to say the least. they did not understand why this person was being so mean, they literally just pointed out the obvious, right? “but you are! are you not? monsters don’t look..like that..”
“What I am or who I am, is none of your concern.” their tone is a bit more aggressive than before, “however, who you are and how you got here..”
“That is very much of my concern right now.”
The peaceful atmosphere of the field went away, the beautiful red hue of the sky suddenly seemed way more aggressive and less calming, it made the equally red color of the.. person's? The creature's eyes, way more intimidating, sure to say, Clover was not sure they were human anymore, they did threaten clover for calling it one, so..
Regardless of the sudden change in vibes, clover remained in their (mostly) relaxed state and decided the best course of action would be to just do as it said,
And so they did, “well my name is Clover, I uh- I died- I think? I’m pretty sure I did that-” the creature looked at them unamused, clover continued “Is this supposed to be the afterlife? I mean it’s definitely otherworldly because no amount of wildlife restoration would make a field this full of flowers or the air so pure and breathable-”
“Can you stop!?” the thing interrupted, “get straight to the point: how. did. you. get here” it remarked.
“oh yeah sorry-” Clover mumbled, “so, yeah. uh. How did I get to this place you asked, correct?”
“yes.”
“nice! uh.. I don’t know?” they let out a nervous laugh
“what.”
“I just assumed this was the afterlife is it not-”
“No it isn’t. Are you stupid?” they said with a snarky tone
“gosh- Can you stop being all pissy!? I’m trying to figure out what is even going on right now I literally just died!” Clover yelled at them, which seemed to actually cause a reaction, as they took a deep breath and slowly walked towards clover.
“What is going on, you ask?” the creature remarked angrily. clenching their fists together almost ready to throw a punch, “what’s going to happen, is that you are going to find your way out of this place, and never come back. you understand that, human?”
“but I don’t know-WAH!” suddenly clover had been pulled towards the creature, who stared down at them with hate. Clover almost felt like they somehow were able to stare at their very soul “I don’t think you’re understanding, let me make myself clear once more.” they said,
“I do not want you here. I do not care if you don’t know how you got to this place, but you will find a way to leave.” they pushed Clover away, almost making them trip. but as intimidating as they might have appeared, clover did not back down,
after all facing unfair situations was kind of their thing
Clover raised their voice, “You have been nothing but rude since the moment you appeared, you claim you don’t want me here but I don’t even know what this place is, and honestly I doubt it belongs to you!” the creature raised an eyebrow, expectantly, “I have already told you I don’t even know how I got here! how am I supposed to find an exit, huh?”
“You know, for someone who comes from the underground, you are rude.”
It gasped,”how do you-”
Clover stood proud, “I just assumed, you know, you don’t find lockets with that symbol anywhere, do you?” they smiled defiantly at them.
The creature sighed, annoyed, “so what if you have been down there?” they said crossing their arms, “with what purpose? to kill? it does not change the fact that you ended up in this void!”
..Was that information they just dropped?
“void, you say?” clover asked, “So… this is not the afterlife?”
“not really.” it looked away. “this is a place where soulless creatures go to rest for eternity”
soulless..? but clover-
no, hold on. it made sense.
Clover had given up their soul without putting any restraint, their body was intact. not a single wound caused their death, did it?
yes, Ceroba did attack them, multiple friends attacked them on their journey in fact. but it was their sense of justice and selflessness that drove them to take the decision of sacrificing themselves for monsterkind.
It was their pure love for their friends and their wish to bring their suffering to an end faster that made them want to do this.
to end it.
so clover was soulless, because their soul was trapped down there.
But what about the other kids? did they all fight against asgore? did they-
“hey you freezed up again! What is your issue?” the creature asked in annoyance.
“...what’s your name?” clover asked, completely ignoring the prior question.
“excuse me?-”
“I can’t keep just calling you the creature in my head just tell me your name”
“you were calling me what-”
“just tell me your name!”
“alright oh my- you are incredibly rude and speak in a very annoying tone did you know that?” clover hummed in response, making them sigh loudly. they quickly tidied themselves up, putting in their calm and collected facade again, “greetings,” they paused, dramatically,
“My name is Chara.”
“Now, leave me be.” they turned around and started walking away from clover, who after a few seconds started following right behind them
“Hold on! hey! you can’t just leave like that- it's rude!” they shouted behind them
“you are being rude by following me.” they said, giving clover a death glare, to which the former stopped in their trail and just..stood there.
“you got me there…I guess” they thought out loud, watching as they left quickly.
Chara, huh?
Hopefully next time they meet it won’t be as chaotic as this time, right?
