Can I call you?
It’s a lot.
“Hello?”
“What the fuck happened?”
“Well,” a pause. “I went to prison.”
“You…” Maya takes a deep breath. “Okay. Um. When did you get out?”
“Yesterday. Six hour trial, just about.”
Maya pauses and leans against the brick wall of the convenience store she’s standing outside of. “I think we need to talk about this in person.”
“Probably. I’m staying at my niece’s and she might murder me if I leave while she’s asleep, though.”
“In JA?”
“Yes.”
“Invite me over.”
Simon laughs quietly. “I’ll send you the address.”
Maya jumps the second the door is opened for her. “You actually got a hawk?”
“His name is Taka.”
“Is he nice?”
“No.”
She nods, and Simon motions her over to the couch. Her arms are wrapped around his shoulders the second they sit down. “You are so tall in person. And the white in your hair looks really cool. And I’m still trying to process that you’re alive.”
“You’re short in person.” He looks like he’s going to say more, but Maya glances up and Athena Cykes walks in from the hallway in pajamas, rubbing at her eyes.
“Athena?” Maya asks, standing up off the couch and waving in surprise before looking back at Simon. “Wait, Athena’s your niece?”
He nods, looking confused, and Athena’s eyes go wide as she looks at Maya, waving her over for a hug. “Maya, what are you doing here?”
“How do you know each other?” Simon interrupts.
Maya giggles. “She works for Nick! I’ve seen her on video call a few times.”
“Nick is — Wright-Dono?”
“You know Nick?”
Athena tugs Maya back to the couch, asking, “How do you two possibly know each other?”
They both go quiet. Maya gives Simon an awkward grin, and he pinches the bridge of his nose, telling Athena, “Don’t worry about it.”
“Okay, Simon, you gotta tell me why you went to prison. That didn’t even cross my mind as a possibility after you disappeared! Well… once or twice.”
It’s a long conversation with a lot of questions from everybody. Maya can’t believe Simon met Pearl and didn’t make the connection. She’s pretty sure Athena has vaguely figured out how she and Simon know each other. Simon is shocked Nick and Phoenix Wright are the same person. They all cry a little bit. (At least Maya thinks Simon does. It’s a bit hard to tell.)
“I should get going,” Maya admits, a few minutes after Athena has run off to get in the shower. “I have things to do in the village. But, um — do you wanna get burgers sometime?”
Simon chuckles quietly, standing up and holding out a hand to help Maya up, too. “I would like that.”
