She’s dead. It’s all Obito can think. She’s dead. Dead, and Kakashi’s the one who killed her .
He looks down at Kakashi and all he can feel is rage , the flames of it fed on the pain, on the sight of Kakashi’s hand through Rin’s chest, forever burned into his mind. Her blood coats Kakashi’s arm, her death on his hands.
And Obito looks down at Kakashi and he hates.
A small, pained sound comes from Kakashi, and Obito should revel in it. A part of him does, too. But the rest of him can only be repulsed, can’t find anything to revel in in all this. He’s not any less angry for it.
Another pained sound and Obito sees the branches that once made up his arm, sees them curved, punctured through Kakashi’s chest. It feels like—static. They keep going further in.
And then Kakashi opens his eyes and Obito can do nothing but meet them, search them desperately for a reason , for an answer for what he’s done.
But Obito has never been able to read Kakashi, and this time is no different, even as his mangekyo meets Kakashi’s.
“Obi-to,” Kakashi croaks, and Obito imagined this moment a thousand fold, imagined the recognition lighting in his teammates’ eyes, the first time they’d say his name again. But now it’s here all Obito wants is to throw up.
Kakashi’s hand grasps at the branches, and it only strengthens the revulsion churning in Obito’s gut at the feeling of Rin’s blood slick against him.
Kakashi doesn’t push him away, though, doesn’t pull the branches out and try to save himself. He pulls them further in, pulls Obito further in, and it’s acceptance in his eyes, now, acceptance and agony, agony that’s been there as long as Obito has known him, now that Obito can recognize it.
It breaks something in Obito, shattering the careful balance of his rage. How can Kakashi want this, after everything? How can Obito give him what he wants, even if it’s exactly what he deserves.
He growls, wordless, and wrenches the branches away.
He hawls Kakashi to his feet. Something in him curls in disgust at how Kakashi doesn’t fight him. Deeper still it quakes, hating that Kakashi’s been reduced to this.
All that’s in Kakashi’s eyes is cool, calm acceptance. He’s ready to die. He’s happy for Obito to killl him, here and now. Happy to not have to live with what he’s done.
Obito has spent this time breaking into smaller and smaller pieces, shards and specks of glass desperate to cut in and hurt. He sees the easy acceptance in Kakashi’s eyes and something hardens instead, dusted glass piecing itself together into something rough and malformed.
You don’t get to die, he thinks calmly. Kakashi needs to be punished for what he’s done. (A small, pained part of hi screams that there must have been a reason. He crushes it. No reason could justify Rin’s death. )
Kakashi wants to die. Instead, Obito will make him live.
(And he returns to Madara with the other half of his mangekyo still resting in the socket of who could have been his other half. And Madara laughs. )
