Work Text:
When you first met Levi, you didn’t take him to be a romantic person whatsoever. That was obviously before you both started dating. Both of you had your ups and downs in life, however, being together was the best thing that could happen to you both.
Not to mention the man he was, gosh how you had such a hard time dating because of your experience with men. But Levi, he was so much more, he was everything. He did things that you couldn’t possibly even imagine. The man personally didn’t like surprises for himself, but when it came to you, he went all out.
Like today, booking a private room in a prestigious restaurant for just the two of you. Where he spoke to you tenderly, making small jokes, showing a side of him that only you were able to see. After finishing the desert, and getting ready to leave, he pulled out his surprise.
He got down on his knee and proposed to you. Of course you said yes!
The short haired man who was your boyfriend, was now your fiancé.
Levi looks to his right, staring at you gushing over the ring that adorned your left ring finger, “Do you like it?”
“Do I like it,” you pause to look at him seriously, “Levi, this- this is the most beautiful ring I’ve laid my eyes on. However, that’s not even the point, the fact that it’s picked from you makes it the most beautiful.”
He smiles at you, grabbing your hand and squeezing it.
He only lets go of your hand when he reaches to open the garage. Parking the car inside and immediately closing the garage, he gets out of the car. Walking to your side and opening your door.
“You don’t have to do that every time, you know that right?”
He pecks your cheek, “I want to.”
Opening the door to go inside, you switch on the lights. As mentioned before, Levi is full of surprises.
Your jaw drops at the sight of the kitchen. The dining table is adorned with two plates, and your favorite flowers in a vase. Then there's a trail of rose petals leading into the bedroom.
You cover your mouth with your hands in shock and look at Levi, “How- when? When did you even do this?”
“Erwin helped when Hange took you out.”
No wonder why Hange kept you out for so long. It all made sense now. Why Erwin had made a plan for all four of you to hang out at his dad’s old house, only to tell you that he and Hange had to cancel due to work. The best part about it- as Hange emphasized it- was that there weren’t many people around the area, and that you and Levi would be alone.
You walk to him and hug him, kissing his face, “This is so pretty, I love you so much Levi. This means so much to me.”
He cups your face, “I love you too.”
You peck him on the lips, once, then twice. One thing leading to another, the small pecks turn into a full makeout session.
Levi pushes you towards the dining table, lifting you and having you sit on the table as he continues to kiss you.
Giving you a second to breathe, he attacks your neck with kisses, sliding his hand underneath your clothes. Before either of you can continue, there are heavy knocks on the door.
You both pause, he looks at his wrist, “It’s about to be one in the fucking morning, who the hell is at the door?”
Feeling a little skeptical about the situation, you grab his arm, “Maybe we shouldn’t open the door.”
He sighs, “You’re right.”
“But, then again,” you bite your lip, “What if they need help? Plus they already see the lights on, they know we’re here.”
He nods, “Guess we can check.”
The person knocks once again, making you flinch. You both walk toward the door, the first thing you note is that there is no peephole. Considering the house is quite old, you don’t put thought to it. However, that doesn’t ease your situation.
Levi opens the door, revealing a woman with long hair. You aren’t able to make out her features, it’s dark. You try to turn on the porch light, only for it to not work.
“Can we help you?” Levi asks with an uninterested tone.
“Is Tamara home?” the woman asks.
You look at her confused, when Levi answers, “I think you have the wrong house.”
She stands still there for a second, and while you can’t really make her out in the dark, you can feel her gaze on both of you. She nods, and walks away.
Levi closes the door quite literally after she nods, locking the door he looks at you, “You good?”
“Yeah, but that was kind of weird, wasn’t it?”
He hums, grabbing your hand, he pulls you toward the bedroom, “I think we should go to sleep, it’s quite late.”
You scratch the back of your neck, “Yeah, it is late.”
After both of you change into something comfortable, you lay down on the bed, ready to sleep. Levi sneaks into bed just minutes after, pulling you into his chest.
“Your heart’s beating pretty quickly, are you sure you’re okay?”
You open your mouth to say something, instead Levi beats you to it, “Or was it that you want to continue what you started?”
You gasp in shock, “What I started? You’re the one who turned the kisses into a full make out session.”
“Well you kissed me first.”
You scoff, “Whatever.”
You both lay in silence, facing each other. You grab his hand, “It’s not that. I mean, as much as I would love to continue, the whole thing kind of freaked me out.”
He hums, “The lady at the door?”
You nod, “I don’t know, it’s like you said, it’s 1 am, why was she knocking on the door? Let alone the fact that she was asking for someone else. I don’t know, it’s just really weird to me.”
Levi runs his hand through your hair, “Hey, don’t worry about it. She was probably just lost.”
You don’t say anything after that, trying to fall asleep in Levi’s arms.
A couple of minutes pass, and you’re still awake.
“Are you still awake?” Levi asks.
You chuckle, “Yeah, you?”
He scoffs, “Obviously.”
He pulls you out of bed, “Where to?”
“I’ll make us some tea.”
“Does Erwin even have tea here?”
Levi ponders your question, “Shit, he might not.”
“Oh well, no tea I guess.”
Levi grabs his jacket, “That’s fine, I’ll run to the gas station down the street.”
You grab his arm, “Levi, you do not have to do that.”
“It’s fine, I want some tea right now anyway.”
He notices the look on your face, “Hey, it’s fine. I’ll be back within ten minutes.”
You sigh, there was no hope in trying to convince him, you knew that better than anyone, “Okay, fine. Please be quick.”
He pats your head, “I will,” he pauses and heads toward the fireplace, “Here, I’ll set a fire for you, just sit here and stay warm.”
You smile, “Oh yeah, before you go,” you go to the room and grab his phone, you hand it to him, “Don’t forget your phone.”
“Thanks, I’ll be back. Don’t fall asleep.”
You chuckle, “You know I won’t.”
The garage closing signals that Levi’s gone. You sit by the fireplace waiting for him. You told him that you wouldn’t fall asleep, however your head tips forward. You’re only knocked out of your sleep when there’s heavy knocks on the door again. You flinch at the sound.
You walk toward the front door. Refusing to open the door, you ask who’s at the door, hoping that you were loud enough.
“Is Tamara there?”
Your eyebrows furrow, that weird feeling settling at the bottom of your stomach again, “You already came here.”
The woman doesn’t say anything in return, instead you hear the sound of her footsteps fade away into the empty night.
You turn around, you go back to your room, grabbing your phone. You notice the low battery but ignore it, dialing Levi’s number, his contact picture popping up calms your nerves somewhat.
“Levi?”
“Y/n, I’m running a little late. The gas station down the street was closed, so I went to another one. It was a little farther away-”
“Levi, you really shouldn’t have,” you scratch at your skin, “Listen, just hurry back please.”
Levi frowns at your urgency, “Is everything okay?”
“That lady came again.”
That catches his attention, “What did she say?”
“She was asking for Tamara again. I don’t know. I don’t want to be a bother, but I’m starting to freak out a little.”
“Okay, listen. Make sure all the doors are locked, including the garage door. I’ll call you when I arrive, I’m about to leave.”
“Okay, okay. Be safe, love you.”
“Love you too.”
With that the call ends, you put your phone down, first locking the garage door, and then walking around the house making sure the doors and windows are locked.
By the time you make it close to the fireplace, you notice the amount of smoke that is coming from there. Soon enough the smoke alarm starts going off, you look up at it.
Grabbing a chair, you stand on your tippy toes, trying to unwind the smoke alarm from the ceiling. You could barely reach it, but in the end, you finally got it, but your grip on it wasn’t strong enough, resulting in it falling to the ground. You sigh, you don’t have time for this. Leaving everything where it was, you grab your charger plugging it into the wall, and put your phone on charging.
You sigh, despite everything seeming like a coincidence, you couldn’t help that feeling again. It was all too much, it seemed like everything was happening at the same time.
You decide to go to the bathroom, you wash your hands and then splash cold water on your face. You reassure yourself that everything’s fine, plus Levi will be here any second now. You take deep breaths, it’ll be okay.
You walk out to the living room again, when instead you notice the smoke alarm resting on the chair instead of the ground. You inhale sharply, now you’re worried. You look around, despite the old curtains closed, you still feel eyes on yourself. And this time you can be certain that it’s true.
You look for your phone, expecting to see it on charging, instead it’s not there anymore. You bite your lip in frustration. Levi’s still not here, someone is most definitely in the house, and your phone’s missing.
The sound of something hitting the window catches your attention. You stare at the closed curtain, walking closer to it, you try to peep through the little opening. You’re met with darkness, making you look away until something hits the window again. When you look again, you’re met with a woman wearing a strange mask standing in front of the window. The mask you can only describe as creepy, with little rosy cheeks, and big, dark eyes. The woman, you didn’t see her face, however you know it’s her, her long hair giving it away. You immediately close the little opening of the curtain.
Grabbing a knife for the kitchen, you head toward the garage door. Levi said to keep it locked, however, without your phone, you wouldn’t know when he would arrive. You unlock it, and then walk straight to the room. Locking the door, you sit on the bed. Looking around the room, you can’t help worrying, not only for yourself, but for Levi. There’s really no way to warn him without your phone, he wouldn’t even know what he’s walking into.
You take a deep breath, you shake your head. You put your faith into him, you know him. He’s very observant. The moment he realizes you aren’t answering your phone, he’ll know something’s up. Plus with the garage door unlocked, it’ll only confirm his suspicions.
You’ll know it’s him when the garage opens.
Levi looks down at his phone again, hoping- no wishing to see your name pop up. He receives nothing. No phone call, no text message. He’s starting to worry now, you always respond within seconds. Unless he knows you’re busy. But he knows, he knows how worried you sounded over the phone. He knows you wouldn’t set your phone aside when he already told you that he would message you.
“Shit.” he curses under his breath. It was that clerk’s fault at the gas station, he kept fumbling over his words and slurring. Levi’s sure the man was drunk. But fuck that, that didn’t matter right now.
“Levi, you do not have to do that.” your words ring in his ears, he shouldn’t have. He should’ve just stayed with you like you told him to. He knew you were jittery over what happened. He didn’t know that it would result in a situation like this.
When he pulls into the driveway, the first thing he notices is that the front door is slightly ajar. It makes him visibly flinch.
He doesn’t put his car inside the garage, instead he takes the key out of the ignition.
He quickly makes his way through the front door. There wasn’t much that showed that there was a forced entry. Nothing was broken or scattered as he imagined, which he was thankful for. However, he did notice the smoke alarm.
He calls out your name, noticing the room’s door is closed, he knocks on it, “It’s me-”
Before he can even finish his sentence, you open the door and pull him inside.
Closing the door and locking it again, you turn around and hug him tight.
“I was so scared Levi, it felt like hours, I thought I would hear the garage open, but I didn’t and I-” your voice was muffled into his sweatshirt.
He hugs you just as tightly, “I should’ve stayed, I’m sorry,” he pulls away to check on you, “Are you okay? Are you hurt?”
You shake your head, “I’m fine, I’m just shaken up.”
“What happened? And what happened to your phone?”
“I-I don’t know. I put it on charging, and it was there one second, then it wasn’t,” you try to catch your breath, “I- there was too much smoke coming from the fireplace and that’s when the smoke alarm went off. So I took it off the ceiling, but it fell to the ground and I went to the bathroom and-”
Levi puts his hands on your shoulders, “Okay, slow down. Take a deep breath,” you do as he says, “You went to the bathroom and then what?”
“And then,” you sigh, “t-the smoke alarm was set on the chair, when I had left it on the ground. After that I tried looking for my phone and couldn’t find it.”
“That’s it?”
“No, that’s when something hit the window. And I saw that lady there, she had this weird mask on. That’s when I closed the curtain and unlocked the garage door. I thought you would come through the garage door, so I left it unlocked just in case.”
He cups your face, “Okay, you did good, it’s okay. I left the car outside.”
You look at him confused, “Why?”
“I got scared, I noticed the front door was open.”
“Levi, I know I must sound dumb, but everything was closed and locked. I made sure of it when I spoke to you on the phone.”
“You don’t sound dumb, I believe you.”
“Are we sure that this isn’t a prank from Hange and Erwin?”
“Normally, I wouldn’t put it past them, but,” he studies your face, pushing a strand of hair behind your ear, “they knew that I would be proposing to you. They knew to give us space.”
“Shit,” you whisper, “so, someone actually broke in.”
“Seems like it.”
You hear a crash outside, you look at Levi, eyes wide.
“Your phone?”
He curses, “I left it in the car.”
Levi pulls you into the bathroom, “Hey listen to me,” whispering making sure no one hears the both of you, “those footsteps sound heavier, it most likely is a man. We can’t hide in here.”
“But we can’t go outside either. What are you suggesting?”
He holds up his car keys, “We make a run for the car.”
“Fuck. Okay, let’s say that person out there is a man. That makes two people. Him and that woman from earlier.”
His face remains stoic, he refuses to show any sign of danger to you, he needs to stay calm so he’s able to keep you grounded.
“How do we know there’s not more of them?” you ask.
“We don’t.”
You inhale sharply, “I’m not opposed to the idea, I’ll do it, I just- what exactly is the plan?”
“He’s going to rush in here any moment. That’s what we wait for.”
“The door’s locked, you want him to break it down?” you scoff somewhat amused by your fiancé’s words.
“I don’t think you understand, you idiot,” he responds, making you smile in amusement, you follow his gaze to the window, “it’s not like we’re on high ground, we can leave through the window.”
“But you want to wait for him to start breaking down the door?”
“It’ll give us time to react, and it’ll slow him down enough.”
“What if we both don’t make it out the window in time?”
He shoves the keys in your pocket, “That’s why you’re going first.”
You look at him appalled, “Are you crazy? I’m not going to leave you.”
He scoffs, “You’re not leaving me. Don’t forget that you’re in the same amount of danger as you are in here and outside. Don’t forget we still don’t know how many of them there are. But you’re better off out there, than in here.”
“Levi, first of all,” you pause, “don’t act like I don’t know self defense, and second of all, I’m not leaving until you’re in the car with me. So keep those thoughts out of your mind.”
He grabs your arms, “First of all,” he mocks you, “those were basic self defense classes, from what I know these people have weapons, and second of all, I can’t do that because if something goes wrong here, then that’s the plan we’ll have to resort to.”
You scoff at his words, “What are you saying right now?”
“I’m saying that if I’m not able to leave through the window in time, then I expect you to get the fuck out of here.”
You shove his arms off of you, “And like I fucking said, I’m not going to leave without you.”
Levi quietly seethes in anger, leaving your eyes to water once again, “Fuck Levi. Just- let’s just make sure we both leave through the window in time?”
He nods, opening his mouth to say something, when he’s interrupted by the sound of the door knob of the room turning. Well, at least trying to turn. That’s when you both hear the sound of the door knob violently trying to turn.
Levi pulls your arm, he opens the window, looking left and right before turning to you, “Go.”
You step halfway through the window, when you hear bangs on the door, most likely the man trying to break it down. You rush your movements, you jump out the window. You look up, waiting for Levi to jump out, instead he closes the window. Leaving you to pound on the window, “Levi! Fuck!”
You hear the sound of a twig snap behind you, turning around you see a woman, except it’s not the same one. This one has short hair, she holds up her knife for you to see.
You pull out the knife you had brought with you, holding it up for her to see, “Yeah, I have one too bitch.”
Levi hated lying to you. But he knew you wouldn’t listen to him, that you wouldn’t leave him even if your life depended on it.
He waits for the man to come through the bedroom door. When the door finally breaks through, Levi hears the man moving around the room, most likely searching for both you and Levi. When he hears the man’s footsteps stop in front of the bathroom door, he snaps the door open, hitting the man in his face.
The man stands there dazed for a second, not realizing that Levi already grabbed the lamp beside the bed.
Taking the lamp, Levi knocks the man out.
Levi looks at the man who now is laying the ground unconscious, he grabs the ax that the man dropped and throws it out of the window. Levi has to say, good choice in weapon, “Tch, pathetic.”
Levi walks out the door, looking through the window, noticing that his car is still in the driveway. He walks outside through the back, hoping to find you there, instead he’s met with no one.
He finds his heart starting to race, so many questions running through his head, did you not make it out? Where are you? Did you really not listen to him? Are you hurt?
Distracted by the thoughts of you swarming his mind, the woman from earlier swings her knife at him, despite him being distracted, he dodges her knife.
He has no weapon, except doesn’t exactly render him useless.
It’s subtle, but he notices the woman hesitating. He’s sure, maybe she wouldn’t hesitate if it was you she was fighting, but this is Levi. And Levi definitely doesn’t miss.
Before Levi can make a move, he hears a honk that he can only recognize from his car.
He immediately moves to the right, out of the way when he notices his car racing towards the woman and him. With him out of the way, the woman is hit by his car.
He looks at you with shock, you open his door, “Get in loser.”
“What the hell?”
“Hurry up! I’m not risking any of them getting up again.”
He gets in, you lock the door immediately after he closes his door. Reversing out of the backyard, you drive away.
“What the hell?” you look at him, “What the hell?”
“I heard you the first time.”
“Then explain what the hell is going on.”
“Okay first of all, you didn’t come through the window like we planned. I was fucking mad. And then I had to fight with that short haired bitch.”
“So there were three?”
“Yes. I knocked her out, she seemed a little hesitant to actually hurt me- which is quite funny after they broke in.”
He scoffs in amusement, “The other woman was hesitant as well.”
You hum, “Well yeah, after that, I called the cops, so they’re probably there now. I went back inside-”
“Why would you go back inside?” Levi scolds.
“For you, obviously! What did I say before? I wasn’t going to leave you there. But I went back and noticed that man knocked out and that’s when I heard that woman outside with you and well yeah, I decided to hit her with your car,” you rest your hand over his, “sorry about that by the way.”
He gives you a look that you can only read as ‘seriously?’
“I don’t care about that, are you okay?”
“I’m fine. Are you okay?”
He nods.
You drive in silence, when Levi’s phone rings, “It’s Erwin.”
You hum, “Levi? Are you both okay? I just got a call informing me that the house was broken into.”
“Erwin! You seem too calm saying that,” you hear Hange in the back, “What the hell happened?”
Levi only sighs, you take the phone from him, “We’ll explain later, did they catch them?”
“Yeah, they mentioned how one of the girl’s noses was broken.”
Levi furrows his eyebrows looking at you, leaving you to only shrug, what can you say, being away from Levi brings the worst out of you. He scoffs at you amusingly, guess those self defense classes really paid off for you.
