“Aw Ky, it looks wonderful!”
Dizzy ruffled Ky’s now short blonde hair, caressing the soft, golden spikes with her fingers and smiling up softly at her lover.
Ky had been complaining about the impracticality of long hair for a little while now, and with a push from Dizzy, he finally decided to get it cut again. She had been waiting with as much patience as she could muster by the door to see his new look as soon as he returned.
“Yes, thank you,” Ky let out an awkward giggle, smiling as he tried to relax his eyebrows.
Dizzy noticed the tension.
She didn’t miss a beat, and tilted her head at him, “Is something wrong? Did they cut it shorter than you asked, or perhaps it's been long for a while and you’re not used to it now?”
Ky’s eyebrows twitched at Dizzy’s comment. He tried laughing it off again, broadly agreeing with what she had said and trying to divert the matter to what was for dinner that night before being stopped short by Dizzy’s stern expression.
She made eye contact with him, clearly letting him know something was wrong. As their eyes locked, Dizzy’s expression softened, inviting him to talk.
“O-okay,” Ky paused, taking Dizzy’s hands in his own and squeezing them gently for comfort. Dizzy squeezed back.
“You know how, how sometimes I’d,” Ky’s face flushed slightly as Dizzy smiled and nodded, “wear a certain coloured hair tie that correlated with what you were wearing…”
Dizzy nodded her head, still looking intently into Ky’s eyes, changing her grip on his hands slightly to keep him in the moment.
“I’m a little,” Ky scrunched up his face, “no, I’m very sad I won’t be able to do that anymore.”
Dizzy took a moment to comprehend how cute he was being. Seeing his flushed face be replaced by one of regret, she softly brought a hand up to his face.
“I liked matching with you, it was fun,” Ky stated with resolve, trying to keep his embarrassment at bay.
“And that’s what’s worrying you?”
Ky nodded firmly.
Dizzy shut her eyes and smiled broadly. “Okay,” she lifted his hands to eye level, “would you like me to help come up with a solution?”
She opened her eyes and saw Ky’s blush had returned in full force. Communicating like this was still foreign to him, saying how he was feeling and what he wanted with such clarity, but Dizzy insisted it would help him feel better and she was right. When she looked into his eyes, despite the heat in his face, he felt cool.
“I don’t think it calls for a solution,” Ky said before shaking his head, “ah, no, I would like to but I’m too busy, at least I am today.” He removed one of his hands from Dizzy’s grip to cradle his forehead, “I’m sorry if I worried you with something so trivial.”
“You could never, dear.”
Ky exhaled, relieved, “Thank you.”
Ky apologised again, this time for the paperwork he felt he had fallen behind on, and told Dizzy he appreciated her listening to him. She assured him it was no bother, and that he should make the most of today and get to work.
Once he was shut in his office, though, Dizzy had some things to check.
…
Ky kept his hair accessories in the same draw as hers in the second draw of their en-suite vanity. As he was shut in his office with a fresh cup of tea, Dizzy was confident she had time to snoop without getting caught. Not that she didn’t have an excuse planned.
The draw had two organisers, splitting it into two even halves. Ky’s side had the hair ties he’d wear with uniform laid neatly at the top, with assorted bows, ribbons and vibrant colours filling the rest of the draw underneath them.
Dizzy recognised all of them. The yellow bow, almost identical to the ones she wore in her hair, he would wear out when it was just the two of them. The red band that matched Dizzy’s favourite sundress, and the black one with stripes he had only worn that time they went out for lunch and the restaurant had been shut down without their knowledge.
Reminiscing on the memories of each of Ky’s hair accessories, she stumbled across one that she couldn’t recognise. A two-toned satin bow, with an earthy green and an almost icy white. It wasn’t until she remembered the wings on her back that she realised its colours were familiar too, except she had never seen him wear it.
Staring down the draw, each accessory matched Dizzy in one way or another, just like Ky had talked about. A solution came to Dizzy’s mind quite easily: if he used the hair accessories to match her before, he just needed something new to match with now.
Excited at her deduction, Dizzy shut the drawer gently and popped into Ky’s office to let him know she’d be out for a bit, but back before dinner.
“Okay,” Ky put his pen down and smiled, “Take care. Would you like me to come with you?”
“Oh no, you’re much too busy,” Dizzy said in a joking tone, “I’ll have to handle an errand all on my own,” she posed dramatically, leaning back as if about to faint. Then she stood up and chuckled, “Love you, see you soon.”
“Love you more.”
…
The streets outside were as busy as ever. Dizzy walked on the side of the road, glancing at storefronts and stalls to see if anything felt like the right replacement for Ky. Or was it more of a gift?
She had her heart set on more than just the matching criteria, she wanted something practical and sensible, but heartfelt. Something that Ky wouldn’t be afraid to wear, and something that when someone asked about it he could be all, “Oh this? Well, it was a gift…” as the grin on his face gave away who the gifter was. Dizzy smiled.
Strolling through streets with almost overwhelming storefronts, she couldn't help but imagine how her lovely husband would react if she bought him the different items heavily marketed towards her.
Matching perfume and cologne caught her eye, held in ornate bottles with fancily worded ingredients and over-engineered scent names. She pictured Ky’s happy face as she spritzed herself with perfume of a morning, before proudly donning his cologne. Hm. Dizzy furrowed her eyebrows and held a hand to her chin. Barely practical. Much too subtle for her tastes. A bit of a novelty.
She saw ornate leather loafers with beautiful embroidery stitched up the side, placed next to a dainty pair of heels with the same decorative pattern. Maybe they could go out in their matching shoes, and Ky would smile every time he looked down at the ground below them. Hmmmm. Dizzy was already worried about ruining the shoes by wearing them at the wrong time. Far too impractical.
The dazzling storefront of a jewellery shop caught her attention. Diamonds and gemstones delicately placed in silver blinked at her as she walked closer, and she smiled. Hehe. She knew no ring could top a wedding ring, and something flashier was required for this occasion.
Dizzy’s eyes wandered over to a display of watches. First drawn to the ones with sparkly bands and faces you could barely read, she saw some towards the bottom of the display, a little placard reading “custom dyed leather watch bands”. It was like a lightbulb went off in her mind.
Making her way into the store, she inquired with the clerk about what colours they offered and when they could be done. It’s not like she needed to buy something today, but she might have been too excited about it to keep it a surprise.
“They’re customised in-house, it’s no trouble,” the clerk pulled out dyed leather samples and some watch faces out from a drawer behind them, laying them out in front of Dizzy. Saying a quick thank you, Dizzy began perusing the samples.
The watch face had to be silver, so after tentatively picking one up to no complaint by the clerk, she sat it in front of her. She tilted her head looking left and right over the samples, thinking back to what Ky might like. Blue or white would be predictable, and since it was a watch it didn’t have to be as coordinated as a hair tie. She shut her eyes, imagining the draw as if it were in front of her. The hair tie she had never seen him wear stood out to her.
She looked up at the clerk, holding two leather samples in her hands, “Do you do two-toned bands?”
…
Ky sighed at his desk, shifting his legs under his desk and cradling his head in his hands. That morning, he had already caught himself trying to brush his fingers through his hair numerous times, only managing to stop himself once or twice. Discarded on the side of his desk, he glared at a hair tie harder than he had been glaring at his paperwork a moment prior. He leant his neck back, stretching it gently and looking up at the roof, wondering when Dizzy would be back.
…
Holding a small bag with a logo gaudily imprinted on the front, Dizzy walked up to her front door. She hummed as she made her way to Ky’s office, the two boxes in the bag bumping into each other gently.
“Come in,” Ky responded to a knock on the door.
Dizzy walked in and smiled, before smiling further upon seeing how quickly Ky disregarded his paperwork in her presence. On the other hand, she was feeling rather nervous. She had angled the bag behind her back before coming in, feeling her hands against its handles as she wondered how to introduce it.
“I got something,” she lifted the bag next to her head and smiled, giggling awkwardly.
“You didn’t have to,” Ky laughed awkwardly too, “what’d you get?”
He watched Dizzy walk forward and place the bag on his desk upright. One box was a lot bigger than the other, but as he reached his hand to pick it up Dizzy brought her hand to her mouth and took it before his hand made it.
“Wait! I have to check first,” she opened the box, trying to prevent Ky from seeing what was inside as the curiosity became ever more apparent on his face, ”Okay, yeah, this one first. It’s for you.”
Staring at the box as she placed it in his hands, Ky could barely hide his excitement (or, as Dizzy feared, his nervousness). Carefully, he opened the box and was beyond impressed by what was inside.
“A watch?” Ky smiled, “Thank you, dear, it’s beautiful…”
The awe in his eyes crept into his voice as he noticed the design in more detail. Dizzy sighed in relief, taking the box away as Ky held the watch in his hands. She offered a hand, which he placed the watch in, and she gently fasted it around his wrist.
The silver face shone brightly contrasted with the almost earthly leather strap. On one side, the band was a deep and lush green, and the other was a blue so pale it could’ve been white under different lighting. He turned his arm over, seeing the elegant silver buckle unite the two together, noticing intricate dark stitching running up the edges of the band. The leather-wrapped comfortably, warmly, around his wrist.
Dizzy studied Ky’s expression as he admired his new watch, barely containing her joy as she giggled at each change in his eyebrows or his smile. His face looking at it felt familiar, that pure adoration and joy - the way he would look at her. Ah! He figured it out.
Keeping the blush from her face, Dizzy asked timidly, “Do you like it?”
“Yes.”
Ky’s eyes were shining. It was only because he was moving his wrist to get a better look at it that he noticed the box on his desk again. Following his eyes, Dizzy explained.
“Oh, this one’s a little bit more embarrassing,” she blushed, “it’s for me. I’d still like you to open it, though.”
In no mood to disagree, Ky gently pulled an intricate silver bracelet out of its padded leather box. Dizzy had extended her arm out for Ky to put it on, but she was looking at the ground as her blush crept further up her face. He attached the bracelet’s clasp gently, turning it over so it sat up the right way.
Its silver chain hung gently over Dizzy’s wrist, looking so dainty he couldn’t believe it could hold itself together, but as it moved he could make out its solid craftsmanship. On the top, an electric blue gemstone he couldn’t quite discern was nestled in a silver bezel. Against the polished silver, it almost seemed to glow.
He smiled proudly, only making Dizzy blush more.
Feeling the need to explain herself, Dizzy started rambling, “I thought this way you would match with me just by wearing it. And it’s practical! And I wasn’t planning on getting something for myself, but I saw it out of the corner of my eye and it almost looked like you, and I thought this way we could match even more by wearing them at the same time,” she locked eyes with Ky, “I hope it makes you feel a bit better.”
He could barely keep his tears from escaping. He held Dizzy’s hand, holding his arm with the watch on it next to her bracelet. He felt so happy he almost felt foolish, “It really does. I’ll wear it every day.”
“Good!”
They both laughed, Ky happy he had voiced his worries and Dizzy happy her sincerity reached him.
