Abject misery. Pain! John is in love with Gale endlessly and Gale will not give even one fucking inch. John completely eroding in the stalag. Bitterly sad. Incredible characterisation all round. The bit used for the summary ....if I could drive to this authors house I would. Also there is a line about how John knows he's going to survive the war because God intends for him to live his life without Gale, and I CANNOT stop thinking about it.
